my honor’s thesis: clean is my favorite song that is an album closer but long live is THE closer to end all albums of Taylor Swift and New Years Day was the only way to end an album that everyone perceived to be about revenge but was actually about LOVE and not caring about your reputation because you’ve found someone that STAYS to clean up the bottles of champagne BUT DAYLIGHT perfectly sums up that love as GOLDEN drawing comparison to a love in her past most crushing heartbreak that was BURNING RED BUT EVERMORE is the most beautiful hopeful song that wraps up forgiveness of an entire era of hurt and WHY the fans are the reason Taylor stays and gets through all of the turmoil (most underrated song of all time dare I say). all that to be said, I believe red is Taylor’s strongest concept album even if it is not sonically cohesive, and the PERFECT way to end a heartbreak album is watching love BEGIN AGAIN. genius superior offensive it’s never been done before the same. I need to defend 'Mastermind.' I'm not a huge fan of 'Midnights,' but 'Mastermind' convinced me when I consider this album as a breakup album. Since 'Reputation,' Taylor has been like, 'Yes, it's fate. We're meant to be together, like an invisible string.' So, how can you break up with someone who is your soulmate? You can't. She had to conclude that none of it was accidental. Even when it's a love song, I think it's necessary to think that through. Having it as an album closer perfectly showcases what 'Midnights' is about: going through a breakup that hasn't happened yet, but deep down, you know it will.

i'm just fathoming how big of an album closer 'begin again' actually is. it's like the pure definition of "may your heart remain breakable, but never by the same hand twice", it's like she tells us this story about how heartbreakingly cruel it was to love someone and then getting hurt by that same person, only to realize that in the end of the day love will begin again. it's like the end of this very hurtful reflection upon the end of the relationship.

Begin Again makes me sob as an album closer. Listening to brutal heartbreak she takes us through throughout all of red and then getting to begin again makes me so emotional because she references the relationship and thus so many other red songs in begin again while then also finishing this heartbreak album by moving on in the most sweet way.

I remember my first listen of the entire album Evermore and partway through the final song Evermore I couldn't fathom how such a wonderful song could be stuck at the end of the album. But then when I heard "this pain wouldn't be for evermore" at the end it all made sense and having it as the closer couldn't have been more perfect.

evermore as an album closer is absolutely a perfect song, and somehow it's time to go as a bonus track managed to top perfection. both songs manage to put a nice little end to the folkmore era, and just. they just firmly cement evermore as my favourite ts album, because for me no other song has been able to round off an album as those two. like, clean is firmly on no. 2 for me, but it's time to go is no. 1 and evermore no. 3 because i just Need to include both in my ranking

I think Mastermind is about both her career and her relationship, and how she approaches things because of the trauma of feeling like she doesn't belong her whole life. I also think it's a moment of clarity of her own powers of manifestation, it's deeply vulnerable and self reflective, which is an interesting bookend to Lavendar Haze, which to me felt like clinging to something that no longer fit to make her feel whole to the point of avoiding the end of the relationship and wanting to stay in denial in a love bubble. The whole of Midnights is a reflection of why her relationship broke down, her role in it, patterns she repeats, self sabotage, what ifs, etc, Lavender Haze is the denial stage right before you're forced to face yourself, and Mastermind is the recognition that the relationship was magic because she created it and was the spark herself. I also think about how the person she's speaking to in You're Losing Me is not willing to do the same self reflection, is not in a place of growth or being okay with the discomfort of change or working on the relationship and that's what she's begging of him after the bridge. Both Mastermind and You're Losing Me echo sentiments in Bejeweled and Midnight Rain respectively, too-- which feel like Midnights thesis songs along with Anti Hero and You're on Your Own Kid! I looove how much Midnights keeps revealing itself...

what i really like about debut is how it starts with the inspiration - Tim McGraw - other artists, her relationships, nature, her feelings, remembering/memory "when you think Tim Mcgraw i hope you think of me" (one of the main themes taylor writes about - wildest dreams, all too well, the moment i knew, ... ), and it ends with the artpiece - Our Song - the song, the finished product, the composition, the sound, the lyrics "and I wrote down our song" I wrote it, you didn't, im the songwriter. I think is a really nice message when your aim is to say "hi, im a songwriter releasing music"

Also you have to consider, the song Tim McGraw, is not really about Tim. It's about the SONG that Taylor wrote, TITLED Tim McGraw. And she is telling her ex, one day you are going to turn on your radio, and you are going to hear my hit song, that I wrote, titled Tim McGraw. And that is a good opener for her career, saying, to her exs and others, you all are going to hear MY songs on the radio soon, and you all are going to think of me. And that's exactly what happened. -- And yes I agree with you, Our Song is a good closer. Its showing that, from now on, SHE is writing the songs that will capture her romantic relationships. And that the songs SHE writes, are better than the ones she hears on the radio. And with many hits later, she was was right about that too. Consider that both these songs were written by a unknown 15 year old, that's pretty bold.

I’d love to give a shout-out to the queen that is Bye Bye Baby. So much of Fearless is about being in a fantastical, dramatic, whirlwind romance with kissing in rain, fighting, making up, confessions, etc. Bye Bye Baby is the definitive end of the relationship she’s describing and the daydreams she had at the time (“It wasn’t just like the movies”). Bye Bye Baby is like the reality check that wraps up the album perfectly and I love it with my whole heart💛🫶

I also think Dear Reader as the closer of the 3a.m. tracks has significance because of the time 3 a.m. Like Midnights ends with Mastermind and has that energy that's lighter and confident, but the 3 a.m. tracks always felt like the things she thought about as it got later in the night, things that need to be said or thought about, but it's harder to do. Like the final admission of what's really going on when you tried so hard to spin it another way like she does throughout the first part of Midnights. All of the 3 a.m. tracks felt a little more like that to me, the things that really haunted her and the things you only think about when it feels like you're completely alone, the only one awake, and you can't think about anything else. So, I think that's also a significant thing to mention because Dear Reader closed out those specific tracks as well as the album where she finally just admitted that she knows she sounds all over the place but that's because she is. That's also why I love the 3 a.m. tracks because it goes through so many different emotions and sounds and I think that symbolizes her confusion. Then Dear Reader comes in sounding so cohesive to the main album lyric-wise and sonically to validate that feeling and explain herself. It's just so superior, I completely agree with you guys. Every time I try and think it through I get overwhelmed

For me… begin again, clean, daylight and NYD all capture the new beginning at the end of an album. Long live is my favourite song and is in the group for me of closers that summarise her state of mind at that period … our song, change, long live for me are great statements of her status for me. Hoax Evermore and mastermind are all songs that complete albums. My HMs were Is it over now? Question song that changes the albums reading, your losing me clarifies MNTS more, other side of the door… again shows the flip of Fearless of loving but fighting also….

i feel like for the bonus track closers i would have chosen new romantics maybe its just because its my favorite of 1989 and almost all time favorite but i definitely understand clean as wrapping up the relationship but i feel like new romantics is a better representation of the actual era of 1989? taylor often mentioned how 1989 was supposed to be all about friendships and not love but the album was mostly about love and i think its just a good kind of outlook on the fact that, after clean and moving on from the relationship, she now has the time to spend it with her friends and feeling like the „new romantics“ also, the song makes me feel fucking superior so good on her for writing it

Just adding on to what was said about Its Time To Go. I love how the album before, folklore, ends with The Lakes which is about running away with someone you love so you can heal and process something you’ve been through. And then in the immediate album after, Evermore, we are still in the forrest, still processing the hurt. But for the final song, Taylor is telling us, it’s time to go. It’s time to leave the forrest. We have processed and cried and done all we needed to do. And while the process of healing will never truly end, it is time for us to go into the next phase of our life. To seek out what life will bring us next. And for Taylor specifically, the next phase of her career.

I also really love Timeless as an album closer for Speak Now as it lyrically correlates back to the album opener, Mine. “You are the best thing that’s ever been mine” (Mine) and “So even in a different life, you still would’ve been mine, we’ve would’ve been timeless” (Timeless). The lyrical imagery in both songs are just so lovey-dovey and visualization-heavy, I love it. Even tho I know Speak Now touches on so many different scenarios/concepts, that backbone theme of love is present in both songs.

I think that other great idea for a ranking list is the first song that was introduced of the album, the first single that she put out of that album. like shake it off, or look what you made me do, me!, love story, etc... and base it on if you think that was the right introduction for that album (and i guess that in the case of midnights that it was realized all the album at once i guees we considered anti hero for this list, because it was the fisrt single of midnights). and btw I'm sorry if I write this wrong, but English is not my first language, but i hope that you could understad what I mean :)))

New year’s day is my No.1. I think it is the recollection value and how much that song means to me and also how it overall wraps the album. I also think BEGIN AGAIN is a fantastic close to red because it also connects to STATE OF GRACE: State of grace means to be free from sin. Its the idea of being born in a state that is free from past mistakes. In state of grace she's connecting this concept to a relationship and the feeling of that freshness in love, so I think its beautiful that after the pain of RED she ends it by looping back to the album opener. I think its really hopeful and says I'm trying again and can trust myself more now.

Long Live (it's so powerful and makes me sob these days thinking that "if you have children some day" and Swifties who are getting to share the Swiftie life and experience with their kids) 4. Mastermind (the bridge alone) 5. Change (I created so many edits/amvs in my head to this song for so many fandoms that I cannot place this any lower) 6. New Year's Day (it's good and I love it but everything else on the list so far is not anything I could possibly place lower) 7. Daylight (it's not that I don't like this closer but Lover has never really been one of my top favorite albums) 8. Evermore (this has actually risen a spot thanks to the points y'all made in the video Our Song (as much as I love Debut, honorable mentions explain) 10. Hoax (I agree that Peace would have been a better closer) Honorable Mentions: 1. New Romantics (it's such a fucking bop!!!) 2. Mary's Song (Oh My, My, My) (I have an '06 CD and this was the last song on it and I love it so much. It's "my" album closer moreso than Our Song) 3. In addition to more wonderful ranking videos like this for all the Tracks 5s and Track 2s, I think it would be so fun for you guys to pick one album at a time (like midnights? or debut?).and then each of you arrange the track list for that specific album into a new track list that you think makes the most sense. Then you should film the video in the same format as this one, where you take turns disclosing what each of you think either ALREADY IS or SHOULD HAVE BEEN the ideal track 1, track 2, track 3 etc. for that specific album's concept. I also think you could potentially include all the vaults and/or bonus tracks for an album with all the regular tracks for that same album into the new tracklist as if all of those tracks were all released as one regular full album (for instance, arranging the entire midnights and midnights 3 am tracks into a 1-20 track list order based on what you think makes the most sense for that album's concept).

I really, really, really would love to see this with Midnights especially knowing what we know now. I also would love to see this with debut considering that was her first album and first experience with selecting the order of tracks for an album. I feel like Lover could also be a great option to do this with (and include All the Girls You Loved Before) :)

is it over now snubbed in honorable mentions😫 new romantics too, but i love the new perspective we've gotten from is it over now especially in relation to clean. like she is clean and she's done but there will always be that voice in the back of her head asking that question (...QUESTION?) idk there's just always that person where its never really over so i love is it over now as a possible closer. even though clean is the obvious, better choice (clean is my 2 with begin as my 1) i think they're so interesting and fun as a pair of closers

I also really love Our Song as a closer because she starts the album with Tim McGraw--a song named for another artist--and then spends a large part of the album singing songs inspired mostly by looking at other people's lives or experiences (Mary's Song, Tied Together With A Smile, Stay Beautiful, Teardrops, etc). and then finally ends it all with a song *about* her own songwriting abilities and how she can put down those experiences into words for herself and other to relate to. It's like a little baby Mastermind before Mastermind ever existed.

I have always thought that Daylight and New Year's Day should be on opposite albums. I feel like it Rep ended with Call it What You Want and then Daylight, it would've perfectly summed up that album and how she fell in love over the course of it. It also would've lead perfectly into Lover saying she doesn't wanna be defined by the things she hates but by the things she loves. And then New Years Day coming after Afterglow would've fit perfectly, like through all the shit, she'd shit be there. Both are superior album closers.

I had some thoughts about mastermind as an album closer- I agree with you that it not her best album closer, but I think it’s important that it’s track 13 on the album. If Taylor intended to have 13 songs on midnights (standard edition) then no other song could’ve been song number 13. I think having a song called mastermind as song 13 is symbolic ,and it’s her way of addressing the fandom and all of the easter egg, and the fact that she is a mastermind in that way as well (with her fans). So, I think that mastermind is placed as the last track because it’s track 13 and not necessarily because it’s meant to be the album closer. Maybe Taylor wanted it to be track 13 and it just turned out to be the last track I would love to hear your thoughts on that theory 🤗 Love u 🥰

To add onto yalls conversation on New Years Day as an album closer, for me I feel like reputation has a three part ending, one for each party listening. I think TIWWCHNT is Taylor addressing Kanye and the general public and the media using that same persona we see in IDSB and LWYMMD. She talks to them like children and knows that although this terrible thing has happened, she found whats most important to her: her real friends, her baby, and her mama. I think then we go onto CIWYW, which is what she addresses to the fans. She says this guy treats me like I'm brand new and he's build a fire to keep me warm and you guys don't have to worry. The reputation era was hard but she's doing better now. Then finally she addresses her Joe. She doesn't talk about Joe like in CIWYW but talks to him, saying "I'll be cleaning up bottle with you." That final callback to the part of the album that's still hoping this new love will last. She's reaffirming that as the new year comes and the apocolypse ends, she'll be right there with him.
