What many new players doesn't seem to realize is, that in Max Payne 1 you can change the controls in the menu on when the bullet time activates separate to bullet dodge, this way the gameplay is basically similar to Max Payne 2 where its easier to activate slowtime when you are running and gunning and don't accidentally jump/bullet dodge to floor in front of enemies.

Thank you for this. This brought back many fond memories of watching my dad play Max Payne 1 & 2. I remember sneaking onto the computer to play while he was at work, I have strong memories of the baseball bat mission in the first game and the protect Max with a sniper mission in the second. I was too scared to understand the game so I would just smash dudes with the bat and hide in bathrooms repeating this over and over. Thanks again

I like how in Max Payne 2 you have to click “ I was afraid to go on” if you want to quit out of the game.

I swear man, I could listen to you talk about the intricacies of wall painting technique and the proper shades of white to paint your bathroom and you'd still find a way to make me laugh about it. I look forward to every video you make regardless of whether I've played the game.

Surprised to see you don't mention that the reason max payne 1 gets so much harder as it goes on is because it has dynamic difficulty that is actually broken, it only scales up (as in, just gets harder) and never gets easier no matter how many times you die.
@nekipeh73734 ай бұрын
I think someone mentioned this, i might be wrong, but the reason Nicole Horn doesnt kill Max on the spot in mansion with guns is that if anyone other from police or any other agency starts investigating, they could find Max with V in his blood, so that would mean he went on rampage against Punchinello and his goons because of drug influence, and later died from OD. Sure, that is pretty big plot hole, but i honesstly dont mind it that much since it gives us the "IM IN VIDEO GAME" moment

If you play Max Payne 3 like a typical cover based shooter, you're playing it wrong. It's like playing Bayonetta or God of War with the same 3 basic combos, yes you can play the game that way and it's good for new comers but any expert will tell you that's not how it's meant to be played

Its funny how much i agree with you overall, even had a ranking in my mind before watching this video. Only difference is that i appreciate max payne 1 a bit more and would say that it's better than 3 (9/10) but mp3 is also a 8.75 out of 10 for me and max payne 2 9.5/10 and honestly if it had more content (longer game, but not stupid unnecessary filler) it would have been an easy 10, but maybe its better this way. Amazing video brother.

Ragdolls from old games that were just starting to use them aged badly, that's why death animations mixed with ragdolls is the new norm in most videogames nowadays.

Remedy unfortunately completely regressed on the gameplay side after Max Payne 1, still by far the game with the best gameplay and design from Remedy. Their newer games look cool and everything, but gameplay is unfortunately not a priority anymore.

"In the second game Max moves way faster in bullet time" Yeah, and bullets also move way faster in bullet time, which becomes slow motion at that point and not bullet time not even being able to dodge them, which is something the first game did better.

very pleased to see this retrospective hit my feed. max payne 3 is one of my all time favorite games and i feel it's left out of general discussion far too often. on the topic of the change in arsenal, however, i agree with rockstar's choice to strip the pockets off his leather coat. having him pull out guns from nowhere a la gta 5 would seriously hurt the themes and realism the game tries so hard to lean into. banger video tho kung

Max Payne 3 was my childhood game, I only got to play Max Payne 1 and 2 when I got steam as a teen. I always loved 3, it had great gameplay, a good weapon sandbox despite the new limitation on weapons, and it had an amazing soundtrack, I still listen to HEALTH on a daily basis today and own loads of their merch. 3 Also had some pretty good levels, like the flashbacks, the police precinct mission, and the airport mission, but they felt kinda short and very restrictive. I also feel like Max Payne 3's writing and tone don't jive well with the original 2, it has all the edge of the older games and tries to capture the grit, but it doesn't feel as noir or nuanced as the originals' writing, some of the setups have pretty weak or ridiculous payoffs (like the pasos twist,) and max in 3 feels like an overly serious and sad caricature of the original character written by somebody who doesn't actually get the feel that made max payne himself, it also feels silly that he basically falls for nearly the same inner circle cleaner scenario again but for different politicians in a different country. Alot of his dialogue is pretty silly in a bad way or doesn't sound like something he would say, I hate that they completely crap on the final panel of 2 with its "I dreamed that my wife was dead but it was all right," line while they write off the Mona romance as him just being sad and insane. He even makes some weird comments that feel like the writer hamfisting a political point into his dialogue for some reason, like in chapter 6 when he laments the death of a receptionist at the hands of "some hero fighting the rich one lonely receptionist at a time," when the enemies from that mission are literally highly funded corporate mercenaries. It's such an egregiously dumb line that I'm completely confident in saying Remedy would never write Max saying anything like this. The writing just feels really disjointed and not like a max payne game, more like a punisher adaptation.

Great video. I must say I do not Like Max Payne 3 as a story at all. Rockstar didn't understand what Sam was trying to do with the neo-noir narrative that was very subtle in its writing, And Max not even really being a human but a noir story protagonist. Rockstar tried to give Max depth and realistic behaviour which I respect, but it is not what Remedy intended with the character. I love this series Like nothing else, And MP2 inspired me to become a writer so Im glad to see someone taking another look at it nowdays
