I watched the Banana Fish anime when it aired and after the tragic and angsty series, the ending was just such a crushing blow, it broke my heart. Thought about reading the manga but I don't want to go through that heartbreak again plus I'm not a fan of the art. The anime was really well done though so I don't feel like I need to know more especially if the manga repeats.

There is an ESSAY I could write about the love square in PERFECT WORLD. It is so important to the disabled narrative, but I don't know if it holds as much wait if you're not disabled. There is so much pragmatism that a disabled person has to experience when considering a partner that actual romance feels like a luxury. Worse than that, it becomes easy to sacrifice your own feelings so as not to be a burden or obstacle to thier able-bodied partner. I'm plugged by these thoughts myself as my disability slowly deteriorates my body. This is why them coming together later is so crucial because they love each other and respect each other to make their relationship work.
@ColleensMangaRecs Жыл бұрын
I'm less mad about the ML's side. Like I totally get why the characters broke up in the first place since he felt insecure. But on the FL's side is where it got really frustrating. It felt like she was being pushed together with the other dude for no reason and I wish instead she had a solo self discovery arc rather than trying to make it messy love drama or something.
@emmawright9660 Жыл бұрын
@ColleensMangaRecs that's fair. It was agonizing when FL was with the other guy, and the writer kept teasing a relationship between the ML and his caretaker. I can't imagine the hurt and betrayal that FL felt when ML didn't respect or believe her feelings. I can, however, completely relate to the ML pushing people away because he doesn't want to burden them. The love square is the author giving both characters the opportunity to settle for what they think they want. Perfect World is about that impossible love, but I don't think them coming together would be as powerful without this gap of fear and anxiety as both mistakingly make choices that they think will benefit each other because they both believe they are insufficient for each other. This was done so realistically that I wasn't sure they would come back together. I was so scared that they would have to heal from their pain in their own way, and both move in different directions, at least learning from their past. I couldn't help but feel the ML's pain through all of this and his acceptance realistically unfair expectations for relationships. All of this made it so cathartic when they came back together.

So glad to see banana fish ranked so high since I feel like the manga doesn't get the recognition it deserves while being imo better than the anime (starting from the change in setting which took a bit away considering it was clearly written by someone who knew the 80s nyc and usa quite well); I agree with the criticism (I think most fans nowadays would agree about the ending especially) and would even add more to it but despite that it's an all time favorite for me and I hope it keeps gaining popularity other than being a tiktok trend TT

Houseki no Kuni rewrote my brain somewhat, so it was wild to hear that some people can't differentiate the characters, but really, Land of the Lusterous needs to have a release in color so it's easier for people to keep track of them. There's a few fan recolors with various degrees of success, but I feel like that helps, especially since their eyes being the same color of their hair helps to keep the silhouettes consistent.

A thing I also enjoy about 10 dance is that their roles in a dance pair are the roles of "leaders", "the dominant ones" - which later causes them problems. And also the diverse characters which are presented very subtle. If you decide you want to try more BL in 2024, here are a few recs (in case you haven't read them, yet): Our not so lonely planet travel guide: > it starts with them already being in a relationsship > has a lot of different LGBT+ themes from around the world > travel and typical (country-specific) issues that occur > saliva-enhancing food drawings > lovable characters and their developement Lullaby of the Dawn: > mystery BL: At night the sea turns black and mysterious creatures come out. Selected children called Kannagi have to fight them while exposing themself to the curse of the black ink which shortens their life span. Some see these Kannagis as god-like people, some others as misery. It gets more and more interesting as it's a typical "things-are-not-as-they-seem". > has some slavic influences > lovable characters > the few intimate scenes are very soft and sensual. (One room angel - even if it's officially a BL, I personally wouldn't really classify as an BL) I obviously have more but these are really good ones and which do not (only) have their main focus on romance.

I’m pretty sure most fans dislike the BF ending, lol. 😂 I don’t feel strongly about it one way or the other, but I think the ending makes more sense when you keep in mind its inspirations. It’s referencing Midnight Cowboy and Ashita no Joe, and even the J.D. Salinger short story the series takes its name from, “A Perfect Day for Bananafish”. All three have very abrupt endings where a major character dies suddenly, and then bam, roll credits. And while I love BF, I definitely agree with you about the repetitive story beats! I found it more noticeable in the anime, tbh, since the anime had to cram 19 volumes into 24 episodes. 😵💫

I'm seriously debating reading Voice Over Academy again. I remember adoring the premise but giving up around volume 4 or 5 for the reasons you mention the middle having. Maybe I'll see if my library has it before I commit to buying it. As for best Shojo of the year for me, the only one I fully completed was The Saviour's Book Cafe Story in Another World which was pretty good though I started Golden Japanesque and The Knight Captain is the Princess-to-Be too both of which I like. And while I loved the anime, it's time for me to finally start the manga of Yona of the Dawn in 2024. I read other stuff this year but I think it was all technically shonen though it's sometimes hard to tell since they have female leads - Frieren, In the Land of Leadale, Bofuri, Saint Seiya Saintia Sho, and Shy and I love them all. I also read the original Saint Seiya which is great and almost half of One Piece which I like but am burned out on for now. I'm curious about Chihayafuru but I don't do digital so I hope it gets a physical release.

The Banana Fish manga is VERY highly revered. It kind of hurts to hear criticism of it (not including the ending) even if that criticism is ultimately correct lol. I feel like the first half really gets you invested and the second half is still good but it drags. The ending though. Oh my god is the ending controversial. One half of the fandom thinks it's like, a literary necessity based on the themes or something? and the other half thinks it's a huge betrayal and are highly critical of the author (respectfully) for the story choice and the real life implications that choice makes. I'm closer to the latter half. A lot of us kind of just ignore the ending. Anyway, I love it, I love the art. I can't believe you didn't mention the like primary trauma of the main character though, that's like a huge huge part of the story. and a big trigger warning also. Also, I put Bokura no Kiseki on my list! It sounds great

As ignorant as I am about shoujosei manga, I have read both Petshop of Horrors and the Nagata Kabi one. Both are excellent picks for discussion and I look forward to next year. The rest just show me the variety of the demographics. It does bother me that such a well written series as Petshop of Horrors is placed in the here and now, 90s California. That completely sinks it for me, I can't get over that in a fairy tale. But thats my problem i guess.

Always look forward to discovering new mangas through this channel! Also, cool to see you pick up My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness although just a heads up, that and the other works the mangaka creates is more focused on her mental health than her sexuality (not as a criticism, just so you can go in with the right expectations and headspace). Also, if I may lol, if you do want to read a personable queer manga; I Think Our Son Is Gay is a heartwarming series written by a gay mangaka in the perspective of a mom who supports her closeted son as much as possible without crossing his boundaries. I Want To Be The Wall and Our Dreams At Dusk are also written by asexual mangakas (the ladder is also non binary) that explore queer identities. I really like how they show under-represented parts of the queer community like asexuality! All of the above will show levels of discrimination like homophobia, transphobia and acephobia in order to comment on it but nothing too intense, at least for me (everyone is different though).

Dorohedoro and Promised Neverland are on my tbr for next year as well, here's to hoping they're as good as some I know have said!

I read the first few volumes of Sugar Sugar Rune some years ago and was thinking about it starting this year and watching your shoujo recommendations… sadly they are almost nowhere to be found or cost a fortune on ebay 😢

Yooo been following your progress on these but didn't expect a full ranking. And a year long book club assignment for next year!? 🔥 10 Dance also added to the list. Great stuff!

You always give great new manga to check out! I just finished Please save my earth and it was gorgeous ( I think you recommended this in one of your recent vids but I could be wrong ha ha) I’d recommend checking out the fragrant flower blooms with dignity ( was licensed recently)very cute romcom, and Fushigi No Kuni No Bird which is a really neat historical manga. GAH also thrilled to see sugar sugar rune on your list, it’s one of the few manga from my childhood that i can still read without it feeling too immature. Also did you ever finish reading kitchen princess ? Im so curious what you thought about it. (Forgive me for the long post I just have feelings ha ha)

I never read any of those manga. Except Our Miracle. And I stopped at volume 13, because the volumes stopped being released for a while after that. I need to get the other volumes at some point. Same with Goblin Slayer. I got those on a whim but Goblin Slayer is actually a pretty funny character. The story is very serious, but the MC always asking for Goblins does get quite funny at times. I like little Gob Slay.

Can you cover Medalist 🙏🏼. It's kind of a shoujo. I think in one of your videos you said the lines are blurred between genres.

Guess we'll need to fil out Bokura no Kiseki at every seven seas survey for a while, then. They've licensed stuff from that magazine before. Did you read Ooku this year for the first time, or had you read it before?
@ColleensMangaRecs Жыл бұрын
I read volumes 1-5 of Ooku last year but I did complete it this year. Def one of my fave manga now.

I was wondering if you've ever read or seen The story of saiunkoko? I think you'd really enjoy it and it kinda reminds me of yona of the dawn !

Oh my god, YESSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! okay, moving on. lmao This was great to review. You gave my partner a "I want to try sesame salt" and so... guess what? XMAS GIFT, YEAHHH!!! I've been debating reading Perfect World because my parent just became disabled, but, you sold me on it simply because I want to read something like that. Thanks for putting this in here. Love it.

Whats your opinion about the summer hikaru died. I saw your post that you bought it

I've been surprised by how mild I've been about it honestly. Like I think it's good but it hasn't really gotten me fully invested yet.

Interesting to hear someone rave about Cocoon Entwined because I really disliked it. I was curious about the hair uniform cult/curse(?), but the crumbs of story weren't satisfying for me. The art was kind of nice, but that wasn't enough to keep me engaged. It left me cold. I didn't care about the characters at all.

Finally, I found someone who agrees with me about Perfect World. I really liked the manga but the useless drama around the quadrangle made me almost give up on it. Shame because I feel the last volumes especially are so good.
