Mario 1 is my favorite. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of 3 and World, but it makes up for it with extremely solid core design. It’s all pure platforming that wastes no time with autoscrollers or pitifully easy boss fights. There aren’t any overpowered items to skip all the hard parts, either. It’s also the perfect length for a game with no passwords or saves.

Screen crunch not withstanding, the best way to play 2 USA, 3, and World is through the Advance games which add new stuff, especially 3’s remake. Also 2 USA isn’t just a reskin of Doki Doki Panic but an improved version with a new boss (Clawgrip), a run button, and you don’t have to play the game 4 times to fully complete it. Seriously, Doki Doki Panic artificially lengthened itself by requiring you play through the game as each character. My dream Mario game would be remakes of 1, Lost Levels, 2 USA, 3, World, Yoshi’s Island, and New Super Mario Bros in the Retro Engine with all the additions from Allstars, Deluxe, and the Advance series along with some new stuff for New Super Mario Bros like new levels and bosses.

Bros. 3 erks me in a very relatively small but massive impact way. Whenever you get a mushroom from a ? block, it goes in the opposite direction from where you're standing like you hit a brick block at the same time. Gah, that has caused far too many deaths than it ever had the budget to do. Mario Maker made this right and makes me despise the original more, like WHY DID THEY DO THIS THIS IS TERRIBLE GAME DESIGN JUST TO ADD ANOTHER HORRIBLE LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY IT'S SO EASY TO FIX WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!
