The 2003 remake managed to do what the original did: make you feel trapped. It made you feel the dread of being alone with no help. It did however downplay Leatherface’s personality. I think that movie, in removing his more humane side, led to the later crappier sequels of him just being a guy with a chainsaw.

My favorites are The Beginning, the 2003 remake, and the original. The Beginning was just brutal as hell and had some seriously gruesome kills and a great Leatherface mask. Probably an unpopular opinion but I love it, it was actually the first Texas Chainsaw movie I saw, me and my mom had a great time squirming at the graphic violence, I’d never seen anything as brutal as that movie at the time. Also love the ending of the movie. The original is still creepy and grueling to this day, and the remake was also great, with some fantastic cinematography and Jessica Biel was a great final girl. Really love the scenes where Leatherface is trying to find her, particularly the scene where she’s hiding in the locker. And god damn was the part where she sees him wearing Kemper’s face just unnerving as hell.

I had a similar experience watching the 2003 remake - 14 years old and my family were only ones in the theater - to this day the scariest movie experience I’ve had. It was topped off by coming home and my dad cranking his chainsaw and chasing after me and my brother.

The 2003 remake is also my favorite! The original was always close behind it but after watching Part 2 again recently, I actually like it more than the original. It’s a fun horror comedy with over the top gore and I have a blast every time I watch it. That specific genre of horror movie tends to be one of my favorites. Evil Dead 2, Re-Animator, Return of the Living Dead and Dead Alive are some good examples.

After all these years the 2003 version/remake is still my favourite. Dark/scary/unpredictable atmosphere and solid moments. Somehow I always think that the late 90s'/2000's horror movies have this vibe in them that the new ones lack.
@18ps3anos
@18ps3anos 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on which new ones you are talking about. The early 2000s was a very bad and stale period for western horror. Most of it was either trying to capture what J-horror did in the late 90s or was doing at the time, milking some overused monster flick concept or just pumping weak remakes/reboots of old classics or asian horror. There are some exceptions of course, like the 2003 remake of chainsaw massacre. I feel like that period in particular, even though thinking about it fuels me with nostalgia, wasn't very inspired really and you have plenty of great modern horror movies that do things a lot better - but like I mentioned, it does depend.

I was 10 when the 2003 remake came out and it was the first TCM I ever saw. And I had a very similar experience to Cody in the theatre . I felt so uneasy and ferried watching which was strange because even at 10 I enjoyed watching horror movies. But something about the gore, environment, and characters in TCM stuck with me and to do this day, like with Cody, it’s my favorite TCM film. I’ve seen the classic original several times before and while I recognize it’s impact, innovative ness , and influence of the time , it just doesn’t have the same effect on my as the 2003 adaption. It’s true a small part of it may be nostalgia but I’ve also seen MANY shitty remakes that I’d never say we’re better than the original, even if I seen the remake first. However as far as TCM, The 2003 adaption will always be #1 for me.

Great ranking! My list: 1. Original 1974 (classic, scary, influential, iconic) 2. The Beginning (one of the best prequels ever, well paced, gory and the most entertaining) 3. Remake 2003 (used to be a lot lower cause some of its dumb characters, some boring stuff and no cannibalism, but everything else is well made) 4. Leatherface (I just love this movie for being different, trying something new, has a lot of great gore and cast, loved the atmosphere) 5. Texas Chainsaw 3D (it was tough to decide between this and the new direct sequel as both have a lot of flaws, but this wins due to its entertaining value for now) 6. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (loved the gore, the cast was okay, the Massacre was too short and liked the Leatherface defeat in the end, we don't get a lot of Leatherface defeats in this franchise, but it's too short, not enough material and doesn't bring anything new at all, and so unlike Halloween 2018, this isn't better than most of the entries that it ignores) 7. Part III (Viggo carried this movie on his back, the tone and setting was good, but it's boring and lame at times) 8. Part 2 (I understand this movie, but I don't understand the fans making this better than most of the entries) 9. The Next Generation (as you said, this movie is on the bottom, of course, cannibals eating pizza, Matthew and Renée almost ruined their careers, no gore, worst Leatherface, Illuminati stuff, 🤮🤮)

I hated the remake for a long time because it left out the cannibalism. I honestly didn't like it until The Beginning came out and redeemed it... I totally disagree with you about TCM 3 though. I'm in the same boat that I saw the 2003 version at a young age before seeing the original. For me its the 2003, original, and then tied for 3/4 between the beginning and the newest one. My ONLY gripe with the remake is this: Texas Chainsaw Massacre is inspired by Ed Gein and shows it in the original with household decor made from human remains left right and center. There was none of that almost in the remake which was something that really added to the horror of the Sawyer house. I also wouldn't have minded more gore candy but I'm not as let down by that as my previous comment

Great explanation of why the remake is your #1, Cody. Mine too, followed by The Beginning. I'm not normally a remake guy, but I must admit I like this 2003 one better than 1974 as well. I think sometimes a product can catch lightning in a bottle and be revered despite its crude, rudimentary, nature and people sometimes mistake influence for craftsmanship. In this case, I had a more visceral and lasting reaction to the remake than I did the original.

I disagree on TCM The Beginning. Watch it as a Movie. Dont think of it as a Prequel. The things they do in the movie to set up the remake. The grandfather getting his leg cut off because of the sloppy work. It works towards the dark comedy that the original tried for

8# (Sequel) I never saw Next Generation yet but for me the sequel was the worst. I did thought Bill Mosely was funny. But he outshined Leatherface makin it more silly than serious. Sheriff Hoyt looked like he might out shined Leatherface too but at least in those ones you still felt scared tho. I don't know what people love abt this one but it never felt serious that much to be in my top 3 or 5 Texas Chainsaw was not supposed to be a comedy horror. This looks like a Rob Zombie Texas movie 7# (Trilogy) This was boring but still had more gruesome kills than sequel.. I actually thought the saw was the coolest also.. 6# (Original Beginning) The intense in this 2017 movie was actually higher than 2 3 4 an 5. I may have made a mistake putting this at 6 spot when this should really be 2 spot. This film was the second scariest an second most intense but I put it low cause of lack of Leatherface kills but his last kill in the end was a top 10 for me.. 5# (3D) People sleep on this film. This has top 5 chainsaw kills. It took a gamble an made Leatherface good which was a great plot to see a villian good for once in a evil town. Remember people forget Leatherface is slow an that don't always mean he gonna always be bad.. I loved the carnival woman chase scene. I like how you felt sorry for him this time.. 4# (2022) This had the coolest story in my opinion. It also had the best kills as Leatherface 3# (Remake Prequel) Sometimes I go back an forth with 03 an 06 TTCM because this one was little more scary cause of prequel. But remake had better cast of characters especially Sheriff Hoyt performance in remake was better.. 2# (Remake) This one is more favorite than original an more entertaining but it didn't look as intense an scarier than original. 1# (Original) This is the scariest an more intense when first watching out of all of them. I love the main character final woman the most in this one as well.

To be fair to Adam Marcus, who wrote Texas Chainsaw 3D, his screenplay had it specifically set in 1993. The director was the one who wanted it set in modern times. When I met Bill Moseley a few years back, he told me that the director has no interest in the franchise. Moseley had a back & forth with the director about whether or not Drayton was Leatherface’s father. He said after he kept telling him that he was in TCM2 and played another one of the brothers alongside Jim Siedow and was directed by the original creator, the director kept on insisting that Drayton was the father.

💯 I’ve never seen the MM one. I haven’t had time to check out the new one, my son is in his room now, watching it. I’m off Monday, so I’ll check it out tomorrow night. I appreciate the original for the behind the scenes and the origin story. My favorite is the Jessica Timberlake version. It felt authentic and it was just a great film. Love part 2. Sometimes, at work I wish I had a lighter and a wire hanger just to be dramatic and have some comedy relief. Great video, Cody! ❤️

Hey Cody, I think I can kinda explain the comedy toby hooper was going for in the original that not a lot of people get. To me I do get a chuckle every time I watch it for the characters like the sawyers when they bring sally home near the end when they’re kinda bossing around leatherface and when the cook starts hitting the hitchhiker. He kinda plays that older brother type role to both in a twisted sort of way to where it makes me laugh that they behave like any other family behaves except they do it in a twisted sort of way. It’s subtle and not the type of ha ha comedy that part 2 gave but the elements are there. But that’s just my interpretation though.

I just recently, within the last two weeks, watched most of these. I don't know what I was waiting on? I love them. I guess I thought they weren't for me. My list would be similar to yours except I haven't seen the 3 following the first one, and honestly I don't think I will. No one has said anything about them that makes me want to see them. For now my list would be : 1.Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning 2.The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) 3.The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 4. Leatherface (2017) 5. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022). I agree that my favorite version of leatherface is Andrew Bryniarski, especially in the beginning of the prequal before he actually puts on a face. I also liked how from 2003/2006 there was "gore" but not too much. For me anyway. I think I would have liked 2022 better if the kills were 1. more believable and 2. not so gory/fake. I totally agree on the way they made leatherface more "smart" or whatever in the new one. Def didn't make sense to me.

Spot on with the original vs remake analysis. I remember seeing TCM 2003 back in middle school and it disturbing me to no end. The next morning my dad busted open my bedroom door wearing a Darth Maul mask and making chainsaw noises. Pretty sure I shat myself lol. That's why the remake slightly out edges the original due to it being my first true horror experience.

@@bigkmoviesandgames with the 2022 film they kind of pull a “Last Jedi” on the franchise if you think about it. In the trailers we are lead to believe sally is gonna play a major role, but she’s killed off way too soon before any real action between her or leatherface happens so she’s basically given the Snoke treatment, Leatherface is even played dirty as well, the characters are all complete idiots, and it seems like Leatherface has been killed in the end, but somehow he survives anyway, and thus it becomes the very sequels it’s trying to retcon basically. So this movie was the final nail in the coffin for TCM and if they make a follow up I won’t be watching it

I also agree I watched 2003 when I was 12 with my sister for some reason. And I was also raised on 80s slashers so that’s probably why I ended up in this situation lol. But yeah off the chain experience that left me terrified and I still remember vividly what it felt like to see some of the scenes in this movie for the first time. It’s iconic to me, how can revolver out of pussy not be. I remember my sister who was in her 20s went down stairs to get something directly after that scene and I just rewinded it cause as a young girl I was like: wait did I just see what I thought I saw. Certainly an eye opener for me and how I interpreted the scene. I’ve never heard any other takes on it which I’m sure there are cause it’s not like it’s shown directly just suggested. But to me it certainly played out that way.

Yes !!!!! The remake is to me the best in this franchise. My ranking is (from best to worse) Texas chainsaw 2003 TCM: The beginning (underrated!!) TCM 1974 (I appreciate it, and despite me being someone that prefers originals, it’s the rare case that the remake to me is a much better made film) - the rest I just either enjoy, find Meh or find dreadful TCM 2 TCM 4 (Matthew McConaughey makes this worth it. I can LAUGH at this film at least, and being female he’s not bad for the eyes either haha) Leatherface - bland, though I appreciate the different direction. Texas chainsaw 2022 - fucking awful, I was not impressed at all. And HATED most of the characters. And CGI blood. Ugh. Story was weak and the whole sally thing was done so bad. Texas chainsaw 3D - DREADFUL TCM 3 - what happened in this again ?? 😂😂😂😂 BORING !!!!!

I personally love the 2003 and 2006 versions, i grew up on them and i just love the build of them and how they go into depth of the family, having a good dosage of all the characters in the family along with just leatherface himself. i also love how they made the character with a strong build but still like chunkier ig? but it works becuase you could have a chunky character but they have no muscle strength. I also like that they are so scary and agressive, that is like one main thing i look for in a horror movie character tbh.

In one of the Behind the scenes clips, that was included with the Texas Chainsaw 3D, the director (IIRC) did mention and talk about the plot hole of the main characters age gap. He basically said they are aware it doesn't make much sense, but that it doesn't really impact the movie in any way. And I do honestly agree with that. It doesn't make much sense but it doesn't really impact anything for me.

Nothing wrong with your top choice. I think for most people, it's a matter of how old they are and which they saw first, the original or the remake. For me, I'm 36 now and was 9 when I saw the original for the first time back in 1995. A friend of mine talked me into watching it on an old homemade recorded VHS tape my dad kept in our basement among countless others, and I had no idea what it was about. Needless to say, I was totally caught off guard and it scared me shitless and I had nightmares about Leatherface for many years afterward. I saw the remake in theaters at 17, and while it definitely had its scary moments, I pretty much knew what to expect from the get go. It definitely ranks number 2 for me. The rest of your list is pretty much interchangeable. I was terrified to watch the second due to the severe trauma I experienced watching the original, and I was highly disappointed that it was more funny than scary. The only one I haven't seen yet is the newest one, but I'll check it out because I like to be thorough.

So excluding those movies my top three favorite from this franchise are 1) 2003 remake 2) 2006 prequel 3) Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D (2013). I'm not the biggest fan of the original even though I understand it's historical importance to horror movies or the direct sequel to it. Another nice ranking video Cody.

Instead they out of nowhere have the sheriff and his mayor dad want to kill Heather for being a Sawyer just to make them look evil and Leatherface look good.

Thanks to the fact that my parents used to have Comcast 🤮 and Comcast has some shitty free movies you can watch, I have a track record of seeing the original film, and then seeing the weirdest sequels afterwards. For instance, for the longest time, the only Halloween films I've ever watched were the original, and then I saw season of the witch with no context and was like, wtf is going on, love that movie now. Same thing happened with Texas Chainsaw, saw the original, then saw the 4th film on Comcast, again, not context, was like watching a beautiful trainwreck.
