Provided I don't get burned out, I will probably hit the Scrappy era eventually. I'm trying to stay in chronological order of when the series were produced, but this is problematic because of how scrambled the Scooby series were in the 1970s, with various episodes chopped up and repackaged under "new" series. I'll probably just say "the hell with it" and treat the next batch as "The Scooby-Doo Show" which apparently was the syndicated version which included various episodes from earlier formats. This means putting off dealing with He Who Must Not Be Named for some time, still. Who knows, though? I may decide to do series out of order, especially if I'm not able to secure good digital copies of episodes. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing!

@@JoeGoesOver Speaking of “Mystery Incorporated”, out of all the episodes in that show, only one gave me happy thoughts: Night Fright. Why? Not only does the story feel like a classic Scooby episode of the late 60s, it was a filler episode that had none the atrocious melodramatic bullshit that the rest of the show is infamous for. I like my Scooby episodes to be fun stories with dark elements, not depressing stories with dark comedy… and if you’re gonna defend “Velma”, try not to attack people over obviously bad pandering. BTW, 4:25: Don’t you mean “Saturday Morning Cartoon Dialect”? I feel like the Don Knotts episode is the episode that got me into TNSDM. It was the first episode I've enjoyed since "Ghastly Ghost Town", and the episode that followed immediately after was also a good one. Joe, if TNSDM ever had a crossover episode with the Golden Girls, what do you think could've made a good episode and monster plan? This is a random question, however I am genuinely curious as you seem to come up with the most sufficient of villainous plans.
@MegaMagicdog Жыл бұрын
I'd think it would revolve around getting rid of a retirement home (where Sophia has friends) in favor of trying to build a luxury condo community. Half of the SD mysteries involve some form of real estate scam, right? Or perhaps a trailer park community in which mostly elderly residents live. I live in a city in which many old trailer parks are being sold out from under the residents to be developed into more money bearing projects. These places have been in use since the 50s or 60s and rent was amazingly cheap - so it became a haven for those who didn't get much between disability and SS. I'm sure Florida has many similar communities.
@JoeGoesOver Жыл бұрын
I think @MegaMagicDog has a good suggestion. Real estate swindles are a popular Scooby villain scheme. If not that, I would imagine Blanche would run afoul of a villain trying to woo her to get hold of some hidden heirloom in her family. Probably something left over from the Civil War.

@@JoeGoesOver I mentioned in the previous video about what movies Jonathan Winters appeared in, one of them being “Alakazam the Great”, an Americanized dub of a Osamu Tezuka’s loose adaptation of Journey to the West; Jonathan Winters’ role in the film was Zhu Bajie (or Sir Quigley Broken Bottom in the dub), an enemy turned ally that helps Sun Wukong (or Alakazam in the dub) taking Tang Sunzung (or Prince Amat in the dub) on a trip to India to get the Buddhist scrolls (the scrolls are not part of the adaptation in general).

As a fellow Gen X-er, I have to say I was pretty familiar with almost all of the guest stars on TNSDM - in part because I watched a lot of TV and many of those guest stars were on other shows. Most were still working and making appearances on talk shows so they weren't too far from the public eye. It's important to note that the guest stars on this incarnation were also involved with projects with the CBS network, as the cartoon was airing on CBS, before SD moved to ABC in the mid 70s. Looking back - it's amazing the amount of talent they recruited for this show! The only person I wasn't familiar with at the time was Cass Elliott - but I'm sure you'll be covering her episode soon enough. I think it was a safe bet everyone knew who Don Knotts was. TAGS had been in syndication for some time and he was, as you stated, he'd been performing in big screen films for years afterwards. You may know he was also on Matlock for a while playing Ben's neighbor. It was the first time the actors reunited on a TV show since Knotts left TAGS in '65. I definitely appreciated that the Captain was in physical danger. I knew they couldn't use words like "murder" in a show aimed at kids, but it wasn't hard to figure out what the nephews had on their minds. The Phyllis Diller episode was OK, as usual, the appearance of the comedienne was the highlight. In reality, there IS a Magic Mansion - it's in Los Angeles and it's membership is filled with the cream of the magical tricks crop. They perform all sorts of acts in various rooms of the building.

The odd thing about pop culture is how just a few years can be enough to separate members of the same generation from recognizing references. My wife and most of my friends are just four years younger than me but they're often clueless whenever I bring up something from my childhood. Talking to my sister who was born in the mid-1980s really drove home how few of the celebrities featured in 'The New Scooby-Doo Movies' were going to be known by younger viewers. Even if those younger viewers are old enough to have children of their own. 8:09 That thing right there. Most people were afraid of the Space Kook (understandably so) but Homer Pipsqeak's Captain Moody costume was without a doubt the scariest scooby doo monster to me as a child. His introduction of his voice as the candle blew out and his initial reveal on the staircase was brief but it was just enough to create suspense for his next appearance in the kitchen which builds up to him again with his ghost moan noise as scooby and shaggy make sandwiches. It also something to do with how he seems inescapable. He appears in the kitchen, Fred's room, The closet, and finally in the Library after a chase sequence. His ability to navigate the house in quick succession should be noted. Another thing that scared me as a kid is how shaggy referred to it as "nobody" when fred asked who's ghost it was. The thought of a ghost haunting/Chasing you with no discernable identity or motive is nothing short of terrifying. Velma refers to him as "the man in the painting downstairs" to which someone replies with "Captain Moody", which added some clarity but not enough. His voice also did a pretty good job at scaring 6 y/o me as 80% of the time he's moaning while him actually speaking happening in his last two appearances. He speaks articulate yet he decides to not speak in his first 3 appearances. His appearance in the episode may be brief but it was very memorable for me as a kid. It's a shame that character wasn't the actual antagonist. Edit: My mistake the candle never blew out. Personal Mandela effect confirmed.

Space Kook filled me with direct, tangible horror as a child because of his glowing skull and banshee wail. Your apprehension over the Ghost of Moody seems to be a lot more existential dread than what most kids of that age would feel.
