Hey there, bit of a lurker here. I grew up with Scooby-Doo, all thanks to my mother who watched these when they first aired in the '60s and '70s. The movies were my first show actually, I still own the Batman and Globetrotters DVDs from the 2000s, but one of my favorites is the Laurel and Hardy episode. I think your villain overview is pretty good, but there is one minor but glaring thing you may have overlooked. Yes, the list of plates Fred found were the stolen plates, but I believe Crabtree made that to make sure he didn't use those plates. The main thing you forgot is the junkyard scene where Shaggy mentions that there are no plates and Fred mentions that the cars are all late models. I asked my mother, and she did confirm that typically, cars in a junkyard would still have their plates unless the owners removed them, and even then, they'd only be removed once the cars were sent to the wrecker, so it is very unusual that NONE of the cars have plates at all. What I think is that when Crabtree was fixing up the cars to disguise them, he also removed the plates from the cars in the junkyard to use instead of the stolen plates to help throw off suspicion (a little bit) of the cars being the stolen models. From there he could sell them, and the buyers would be none the wiser about the stolen nature of the vehicles. In fact, there is a very high chance that the barrel of plates Scooby knocked over and Crabtree slipped on WERE the plates from the junkyard, sitting ready to be put on the stolen vehicles. So, in a nutshell, Crabtree stole vehicles, stripped the plates, refurbished the cars, removed the old plates from the cars in the auto junkyard to use on the vehicles, and then sold them off. I think that based on this, Crabtree does deserve a higher score, as he was smart enough to know not to use the stolen plates and simply replace them with old plates from cars that were no longer in use and that list was to make sure that the stolen plates would not be used on the vehicles.
@JoeGoesOver Жыл бұрын
That's actually a very well-thought out theory and I could see it happening. I suspect different jurisdictions had/have different rules for disposing of vehicle license plates, though, and your mother's experience may not be typical for the entire country. This is why on sites like Reddit, if someone asks for legal advice, they'll get multiple and conflicting suggestions, despite everyone responding being correct in their county or state. Further evidence why it's never a good idea to solicit legal advice from Reddit. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Always love seeing this series! Excited to see more! You mentioned that props fall into Operation rather than Outfit in this episode, but out of curiosity, where would you place audio? Specifically, the various calls, laughs, and growls that the monster makes. Stuff like the Space Kook's iconic laugh, Redbeard's speech patterns, the wails of various ghosts, etc.
@JoeGoesOver Жыл бұрын
I would likely classify sound effects as props, unless they were part of the villain's vocalizations. So in Haultrey's case, the spooky noises in the Juneberry fog would be "props" whereas the Space Kook's banshee wail would be part of his costume. Thanks for watching and commenting! Part Six is in the works!
@matteopugliese4658 Жыл бұрын
What if the whole villain scheme relies on a "prop"? In future series there would be cases where the villain doesn't wear a costume but just operates a robot or something else. In that case you would count this in costume or you would just don't give anything to costume? I assume/suggest the former. And if there is both a robot and a costume villain (like in one episode the main monster, the Faceless Zombie is a robot while the himan villain just wears a gorilla suit)?
@JoeGoesOver Жыл бұрын
@@matteopugliese4658 I would likely treat anything that contains the villain as a costume and everything else as a prop. So for example, if the guy is riding inside, say, a mechanical dragon, I'd consider that an "outfit". If he was operating a robot remotely, then probably as a "prop", but depending on the case I may still end up ranking it in the "Outfit" section to keep things simple. In the Faceless Zombie episode, the gorilla suit would be used as the "Outfit" and the Faceless Zombie as a "prop". I do want to go on the record that the Faceless Zombie could be one of the creepiest Scooby monsters that didn't drive a spaceship.
@matteopugliese4658 Жыл бұрын
Understood. I would keep the outside prop as a costume in cases in wich the villains don't wear anything, there are many cases like that expecially in What's New Scooby Doo (the Snow Creatures, the living toys, the glowing animals, the skeleton racer ecc.) And some in Mystery Incorporated too (the Fright Hound, the Horrible Herd, the Krampus, the Dream Weaver too in some way since he was just an immage projectex into people minds) since otherwise the villain wouldn't get anything for outfit, wich i assimd is what you already meant

It would have been nice if the gang had met Abbott & Costello (since HB had done a cartoon series almost a decade prior to TNSDM) and they even had Bud Abbott voice his own character before passing in 1974. I know Abbott was in poor health, but I wonder if he could have voiced himself one last time in 72-73 when this show was in production? Or perhaps Universal got the rights to A&C back by the time TNSDM was in production. As a Gen Xer, I always knew of Laurel and Hardy - pretty much everyone did. Their movies still played on TV (usually on weekends), and everyone watched "March of the Wooden Soldiers" which was a Christmas time staple. Not to mention the efforts of The Sons of the Desert (Dick Van Dyke among them) who helped keep the memory of the comedy team's work alive. Car theft depends on the car stolen. It's true they are often stripped and sold for parts (catalytic converters are particularly popular alone due to the precious metals used in them), but car rings have been known to sell their stolen wares overseas intact. I've heard of people who were contacted after their vehicles were found anywhere from Central and South America to Eastern Europe. In those cases it was luxury cars that stayed in one piece. As for Don Knotts: I always thought it was odd how he was in two episodes but only as "himself" for one episode. If they were run out of order it could explain why Scooby recognized Don Knotts in the episode in which he was Homer Pipsqeak and thinking he was in a new role. Since TAGS was still very much in syndication, (and where Don Knott's played his most iconic role) it's natural to have had him go the route of a deputy of a mock Mayberry. Don't be surprised about Knott's masculine prowess! I have heard rumors from some old timers who said despite his looks, he had plenty of charm and had no problem getting a pretty girl on his arm. He was married 3 times after all!

GenX covers quite a span of years and it's not uncommon for some aspects of pop culture not to be known by the entire generation. For example, my wife and most of my friends are four to five years younger than me. Despite us all being "GenX", I will occasionally bring up an old TV show or commercial from my childhood and they'll all make that stupid Tim Allen confused noise at me. It may be that Bud Abbott voiced himself back then purely to keep financially afloat as sadly it wasn't unheard of for so many of our once-beloved entertainers to spend their later days sick and broke. We like to think about how fun it must have been for those who created the stuff we loved as kids, but that was seldom the case for so many of the creative talent behind the scenes. I know someone who voiced a significant character from many of our childhoods and he was treated so badly by the studio that he doesn't like to talk about those days with me, and when he does, it's seldom pleasant. Fred and Velma attempting to imitate Laurel and Hardy is the worst I've ever heard. That L&H impression isn't comedy... It's tragedy. Maybe there's a similar tragedy that befell Sheriff Dandy, which is why he never laughs. There's nothing more tragic than an unfunny comedian.

Is there a time that a new video comes out like every two weeks, or could a video come at any time
@JoeGoesOver Жыл бұрын
Sorry, while there's no exact time table, I have been trying to get these out every two weeks. Unfortunately, I had a health issue come up that pretty much debilitated me for a week. And when I say "debilitated", I mean that not only did I miss five days of work, but I couldn't do any writing or editing at home, either. I've been able to upload some of the Shorts I've been doing as supplements to my Villain Ranking videos, but that's only because I could do those in bursts when the pain subsided enough. At the time of this writing, the script for the next one is finished and I have about a third of it filmed and edited, but because fate enjoys being a dirty $#@!, the city is currently doing loud street work right in front of my house this week which limits when I can actually record footage. It's also slow-going because the health issue hasn't completely cleared up which makes recording and editing difficult, but not impossible. With luck, I'll have Part 06 up this Saturday or Sunday. Provided I don't get struck by a meteor or something at this point.

It's too early for me to say yet as I haven't reviewed them all. It's difficult to rate a "favorite" as so many of them have been pretty lackluster compared to the classic villains from 'Where Are You?'. In this series, my "favorite" may end up being decided by which one I disliked the least, although the shark men are probably the creepiest so far. Thanks for watching and commenting!

i could be 100% wrong..but ...doesn't Gene holtree appear in also the season 2 opener, Scooby doo meets Josie and the pussycats? pretty sure he pulls up, same costume, hat, and car even below the steamboat...im guessing reused character models were a big thing among HB studios at the time-
@JoeGoesOver Жыл бұрын
Indeed there is a lot of borrowing of models and wholesale lifting of animation from earlier episodes. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the best animation in 'The New Scooby-Doo Movies' is from the re-use of cels from 'Where Are You?'. The worst looking stuff is always whatever was drawn new for this series. I scrubbed through the Pussycats episode and one of the characters looks a LOT like Haultrey, but he has a different color scheme for his outfit. They're different characters, but if both appeared in the same episode, the casual viewer would assume they're the same person. If you REALLY want to see a re-use of a character model, stay tuned for my next upload because it features an episode with a ridiculously re-used villain. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Since some of the guest stars were fictional characters like the Addams family or Batman and Robin, why couldn't they just have the guest star be Barney Fife? A copyright issue, I suppose.
@JoeGoesOver Жыл бұрын
It would absolutely be a copyright issue, but as both shows were broadcast on CBS at the time, you'd think they could have worked it out. I imagine Knotts wouldn't have appreciated it, though, after having just left the character behind prior to his appearance here. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I wanna ask: are you gonna do the live action movies or are you just sticking to animated stuff?
@JoeGoesOver Жыл бұрын
I will probably just stick to the animated stuff, but wouldn't rule out discussing either of the two live action films if I had what I thought was a decent take on them. Yes. There were ONLY TWO "live action" films. The thing is, I had been planning to do a video about them over something interesting I noticed, but then on a lark I briefly checked out a much larger Scooby-Doo channel and saw they did a video that was EXACTLY what I had been planning to do which pretty much put paid to that idea. I generally tend to avoid looking at other Scooby-centric KZbin channels so as to not taint my own feelings on the show (as well as to avoid any accusations of lifting the ideas of others). After noticing I had been following that channel on social media but forgetting why, I checked out their page and was there just long enough to see that video topic before closing my browser window in a panic. I would appreciate being told if anyone else happens to do a video linking John Carpenter's 'The Thing' to Scooby-Doo, because I likely wouldn't find out otherwise. And thanks for watching and commenting!

Do you think you’ll finish the new Scooby-Doo movies even though the villains are a bit dull compared to others, or will you just go to a different show such as the Scooby doo show, or even new Scooby-Doo shows like be cool Scooby doo or Scooby doo and guess who. As much as I don’t love this show, you make it enjoyable
@JoeGoesOver Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your nice words! I do plan on finishing this series and with the next upload coming soon (barring any more unexpected health issues that delayed it) I'll have reached the half-way point. Upon rewatch, 'The New Scooby-Doo Movies' hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be, but these episodes are also double the length, which means it's been taking a lot longer to go over than the ones featured in 'Where Are You?'. I've toyed with the idea of skipping around the various series and not sticking to their chronological release, and even hopping between series (doing an episode from 'The Scooby-Doo Show' then one from 'What's New?', etc.), but I also feel it's important to be able to have a final tally at the end to show all the villains ranked with the others in the same series. So for now, provided I can still keep my motivation, once I'm finished with 'The New Scooby-Doo Movies', my next focus will likely be 'The Scooby-Doo Show' episodes from 1976-1978.
@srstriker6420 Жыл бұрын
Well for the Don Knotts episode the Skeleton looks more like a alien especially how it is walking in the cemetery, how about this was way ahead of John Carpenter’s the Fog and this episode would be something similar in the Speed Buggy episode to come, they ghosts that they used are pretty especially the three eyed one and the dinosaur because they use the dinosaur as the main disguise also while I’m on this have you heard of the Monster of Partridge Creek because that should be important for the Snow Beast in the Scooby Doo show. I didn’t realise about the Indiana Jones reference but do you think that he should have crossover with them? Also where you get that from 10:05 Yeah that was a missed opportunity Abbot and Costello crossover because they started the horror comedy thing before Scooby Doo was made The ghost of Bigfoot was wired because it doesn’t look like Bigfoot at all because it’s like the Wax Phantom with a beard and that while the Snow ghost looks like Xemnu the living Hulk’s little brother because how could there be a ghost of Bigfoot if they found a dead body and never captured one. Well I knew Laurel and Hardy from this episode and my grandparents did own a few dvd on them. You know I did wonder about the other guys in the skeleton costumes and they just disappeared it’s just like Mike from the Dognapping episode do you think both of theses episodes here should have been connected, because that’s what I thinking of for that cancelled third live action Scooby Doo movie where half of those episodes were connected to a crime Lord who has enough of the gang interfering with his plans

The cattle skull monsters featured in my video were from Terry Gilliam's "Time Bandits". Those made a distinct impression on nine-year-old me! It's always fun to speculate about a hidden conspiracy taking place in the background of our beloved shows. Another good example of this was in the Grenada Sherlock Holmes series when they took several unrelated crimes and linked them to Professor Moriarty, despite Doyle not having done that in the original work.
