I still think it's hilarious how the Mamba Wamba plot was actually based on a short story where the curse was real and the members of the band were killed off one by one

I saw a reference to 'Papa Benjamin' on the fansite, but didn't pursue it any further. From what I saw, though, it sounds more like "inspiration" rather than "adaptation". Still, nothing beats the episode of 'Mystery Incorporated' based on 'War of the Gargantuas'. Thanks for watching and commenting!

If they had leaned into the Seattle underground as a setting and based the episode more in how it actually looks, it would probably be one of the most effective settings in Scooby Doo history. There’s something so eerie and unsettling about those empty and abandoned rooms with long underground tunnels.
@JoeGoesOver
@JoeGoesOver 10 ай бұрын
Agreed! I'm guessing the writers read a magazine article or learned an interesting fact in school and ran with what was in their head and not what real life entailed. A cramped, confined series of brick tunnels is a lot creepier than a massive, well-lit cavern. SERIOUSLY. Where did all that light COME from...??? Thanks for watching and commenting!

When I was a kid watching it the underground was intriguing and a bit spooky but having it be claustrophobic would have been terrifying. As far as the well lit nature of locations in the show I just assumed if they acted like a place was suppose to be dark that it was and we could see everything just fine as the audience since they were playing be soap opera/suspense rules. It still doesn’t excuse the inconsistent nature of how they animated such things in the show.

What's funny about the Mamba Wamba episode is that when I first watched it as a kid, I thought the band was from one of the Scooby-Doo imitators that Hanna-Barbera made like Jabberjaw or Speed Buggy. They just looked like they wouldn't seem out of place in a crowd of meddling kids. That's why Lila being part of the scheme was so shocking to me on my first viewing, I thought that would be like having Melody be the villain in the Josie & the Pussycats crossover in The New Scooby-Doo Movies. I knew she wasn't a zombie but my theory was that Ghost Clown or Merlin-esque hypnotism was being employed. Roger however struck me as an obvious culprit however so I just assumed he was an original character created for the episode. In hindsight, the fact that the Scooby crew does basically everything while the band is completely useless probably should've tipped kid me off to the fact that it wasn't a crossover. Also, I swear to god I remember there being a scene of Mamba Wamba actually turning Lila into a "zombie" on-screen to show the band what will happen if they don't sign the parchment but apparently the Mandela Effect has struck again.

Don't be too quick to rule out that scene having existed! As we've seen before, missing scenes from Scooby episodes are absolutely a thing when stuff gets added or cut during syndication. Despite nothing on the fansite mentioning otherwise, it could still be a thing. It's also possible that a similar scene existed in a different episode and you're conflating the two. I absolutely see what you mean about this looking like a crossover episode. The Alex Super Experience is one talking animal mascot away from being yet another 1970s Scooby show clone. In Mamba Wamba, they might've actually gotten away with getting them to sign that contract under duress. The laws outlawing it are from the 1980s, so it's possible that they could've got a ruling in their favor if they asked for a trial by 3 judges instead of one with a jury.
@JoeGoesOver
@JoeGoesOver 10 ай бұрын
I dunno. You can never tell when it comes to how a judge might react, especially if they're corrupt, but this would be so obviously a fraudulent contract, I can't help but think any judge that'd rule against Alex, Ray and Deek might face censure. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing!

You dare assume that a talking dog in a show with supernatural creatures would follow real life laws like avoiding a frog? If anything, it should be obvious that the multiverse of the Scooby Doo verse is too great. As someone who has been watching nearly every single MCU movie since Iron Man 1 and The Incredible Hulk (except for the newer films and shows, those I’ve still yet to see), including No Way Home and Multiverse Of Madness, I’d argue that the Scooby Doo verse could have multiple dimensions created and nobody would bat an eye at Scooby’s ancient alien dog heritage.

Another thing that the writers could theoretically -- but unlikely -- have used for "inspiration" was a story segment from Amicus Studios' DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS, a horror anthology from the mid-Sixties. The second story in it is about a jazz musician who brings about a curse upon himself when he "borrows" the rhythm of the music played during a voodoo ceremony he witnesses while touring the West Indies. It'd be kind of interesting if this episode had at some point revealed that some of the goings-on actually were the result of unwanted supernatural attention due to the band's (clunky-sounding) new song.
@JoeGoesOver
@JoeGoesOver 10 ай бұрын
I wouldn't necessarily call it "unlikely", because as we've seen, Hanna-Barbera took a LOT from pop culture, so who can say where they drew inspiration? In a way, everything we do or say is "inspired" from something we saw or read leading up to the moment we put words on paper. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing!

@@JoeGoesOver, I’m autistic, and I tend to trust people sometimes even when I rarely call them or barely talk to them most of the time. I also like being alone sometimes but also with people, so the splitting up tick could be Fred being used to doing stuff by himself while also still sticking around people he expressly trusts (the gang in this case). In which case, kudos to the writers for accidental autistic representation that was way ahead of its time, at least from my perspective..

I'm no counselor but happy to help in whatever small way I can. The trick I always use for getting through rough times is what I think to myself as "Two Weeks". At my age, time is a blink. Right now, it still feels like I'm living in the mid-2010s despite being 2024. As I write these words, it's near the middle of the month despite it feeling like I just celebrated the new year last night. Being aware of this and that time is what's needed for getting through most bad days, I've found focusing on knowing that I'll probably feel better in two weeks, even if just a little, and I'll feel a little better two weeks after that, and at my age two weeks feels like no amount of time has passed at all, helps keep my mind from dwelling too much on what's hurting me. I'm not saying this is a perfect plan, and there are absolutely moments in life where this won't help at all (especially if what's causing a bad day is a regular occurrence, meaning you can see more bad days on the horizon), but it's been something that's helped get me past other lousy moments in my life. It's also frustrating when people tell you to just "cheer up", when no amount of "cheering up" will manage to get rid of any underlying issues like health problems, relationship issues or lack of money to cover living expenses. At the very least, I hope your bad days are at least caused by temporary problems with a hopefully quick solution!

I wonder if the reason the gang can survive being burned is because Shaggy and Scooby are emitting some Ultra Instinct power from within and subconsciously pass it onto the gang as well. Remember, these guys are always the ones who deal with the supernatural and the paranormal out of all the gang, and that’s not to mention Shaggy becoming cursed so many times it’s become par for course. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were secretly descendants of magic born beings in their own families just like Ben Ravencroft was a descendant of Sarah Ravencroft in The Witch’s Ghost. That, coupled with the whole access to a pocket dimension, means Shaggy and Scooby are really powerful and just aren’t realizing it..

Crenshaw got a much lower score than I was expecting honestly. Though it's worth noting that Daphne has a sheet over her head in the piano, I always assumed that to be the demon trying to suffocate her to death ever since I first saw the episode. Though TBH, I've personally never agreed with you on kidnapping the gang for a few reasons. The main reason you often bring up is that it gives them more motivation to meddle in your affairs but assuming that it doesn't just give the remaining members incentive to stick around and avenge their fallen friend, it's a sure-fire way to get the local homicide department on the scene. And would you rather face kidnapping charges or murder charges after getting caught? Also kidnapping one of them implies intention to kidnap the rest if given the chance, giving them more reason to stick around doesn't matter much if you succeed in catching them all.
@JoeGoesOver
@JoeGoesOver 10 ай бұрын
Man, what kind of sheets do you use that you risk suffocating? Okay, I suppose rubber sheets are a thing, but those aren't exactly common. Occasionally, kidnapping will be a necessary part of the plan, but so often in the Scooby-Dooinverse it feels like the villain is just panicking and resorting to desperate measures without thinking things through. Although, not to get too... DARK... but I can't help but notice it's almost always Daphne, the cute one, who gets taken by the overwhelmingly male bad guys. If Scooby wasn't ostensibly a children's cartoon, it makes you wonder what might be the motivation behind her always being the target. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@JoeGoesOver, true that. I am more for Shaggy and Scooby getting kidnapped, since those tend to be so easily scared that they’d be likely to either run away or yell for help. There even is a scene in Mystery Incorporated where the whole gang plus Amy the mermaid are all caught and tied up, yet only Daphne is gagged for some reason. They could’ve gagged the whole gang, but they don’t. And it’s not like they don’t have the option to. Plenty of bad guys use duct tape (as seen in The Mystery Begins), or gag multiple people as seen in Be Cool Scooby Doo. But instead they specifically gag Daphne and don’t even bother with the rest. The one time Shaggy was gagged happened in a 2 second clip where Scooby found him, but that’s about all. I happen to have myself an obsession with gag scenes probably originating from my track record watching Disney movies. I remember I used to hate watching Aladdin and Tangled specifically due to those scenes, which is ironic considering those are the very scenes that have become my favorite out of those movies. I’m highly picturing scenes in my head over which of my favorite characters or actors would I love to see gagged that might never happen (or might because my dream is to become a film/tv writer-director-producer), so yeah the oddly kinky thoughts are boiling, but I’m autistic and I’m used to seeing gag scenes as threatening due to associating them with kidnappings, so not intentionally kinky..

Speaking of characters in this cartoon resembling other characters, it just hit me.... I don't who here if any are fans of DC Comics' Doom Patrol, but Mamba Wamba's outfit looks like it may have been the basis for the look of a hi-tech voodoo practitioner that George Perez helped design for the new Brotherhood of Evil in the Eighties.

35:15: given that the villain has Gold Coins, those are meant to be 1 Dollar Coins, most likely Eisenhower Dollars, since this is the 1970s. The Sacagawea Dollar, like the ones the Powerpuff Girls get in a Tooth Fairy themed episode, wouldn’t exist until the year 2000.

Thank you very much! My channel didn't start out with the intention of doing Scooby analysis, but rather was meant to be a catch-all for any subjects that caught my interest. It started leaning toward our favorite talking dog a few years ago. While re-watching the franchise with my daughter I started noticing things I'd missed as a child, specifically how often the Gang would commit crimes themselves and nobody mentioned it. "Hey! They just broke into that guy's house!" and stuff like that. Once a few of my Scooby videos started getting traction, it became obvious that the topic was what appealed to most, so I said the heck with it and started leaning hard into it. It's very likely I'll eventually cover the later series as time goes on, but as this is not my full-time job and I'm only able to produce two or three per month, it might be a while. Here's hoping I get there eventually! Thanks for watching and commenting!

It's my first time commenting here, but I wanted to say thanks to you Joe, for reviewing all the episodes so far. Scooby Doo has been my lifelong special interest, I still have the VHS tapes of some of the movies & episodes from when I was a kid. It's a very comforting series for me and your style of videos with the refrences when you say a certain phrase reminds me of when I start repeating a vocal stim lol. I'm extremely excited for the coming videos as well as The Scooby Doo Show is one of my favorite iterations of the gang because it has Scooby Dum, my favorite of the colorful cast of characters haha. The episode where they go to the island with the hotel always scared me when I was younger, something about the hypnotism and overall energy of the place just had a good setting for spooking me I guess ! It'll never top The Backstage Rage though on being the scariest episode to kid me though. That Cloaked Cavalier/Puppetmaster was eerie as hell. I hope you and your family have a good rest of the new year, here's to it being a positive one. Cheers.

56:20-56:53 they’re just built different, Joe. I guess Crenshaw saw that too, cause look at his face when Shaggy and Scooby fly up and land on him like that..😂 56:58-56:59 again, I love that face 😂 57:03-57:21 well, as SpongeBob would put it best, “IMAGINATION 🙌🌈”. You know, cause SpongeBob Squarepants logic means that imagination comes to life. And Shaggy is powerful enough to use 0.001 percent of his power. Who’s to say he can’t accidentally summon things out of nowhere so easily? 57:23-56:47 again, Shaggy and Scooby are powerful gods in their own right. Pocket dimension, providing 1 percent of super power to their friends (even when they don’t deserve it), and defying gravity? They are clearly ultra-instinct.. 58:58-59:31 true. The horror. Maybe Scooby was scared because he thought it was the same lobster from earlier?

As much as I disliked the Mamba Wamba episode, I did like Alex Super, Ray, and Deek's characters and designs, and I wish they had been used in more Scooby episodes and maybe their own spin-off series. I headcanon that Alex Super is the half-brother of Butch Cassidy from Scooby "clone" Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kids. And their father is none other than Ace Decade, the antagonist from the Diabolical Disk Demon episode, which makes for interesting drama, given how Ace's morals are the complete opposite of Butch and Alex's. It also makes sense given that Jack Cassidy, the dad of David and Shaun Cassidy, wasn't a very good person. I have a lot of headcanons and ideas related to the Scooby Doo franchise and the Scooby "clones" but that would be a post for another time.

the story you tell at 46:24 about working at a donut place is one of the reasons I dislike the idea of lowering the minimum age for labor. You said you were a teenager, do you remember your exact age? I'm curious because I've heard there've been talks to reduce the minimum working age to 14 so companies can "help offer more employment opportunities to more people" it's definitely not because they want a naive and easily manipulated population to serve as their new workforce. Of course not. That is one of my concerns, younger people would be easier to fool and less knowledgeable about unethical behavior supervisors may partake in.

My first job was at age 14 for the summer and it is/was legal in my state under a bevy of circumstances including how late in the evening I was allowed to work, whether it was a school night and the type of job. At the bakery, I was 15 when I started and worked for the evil overlords there until I was 19 (I think?). Oh, they DEFINITELY took advantage of the dumb kids there. They generally hired three kinds of people: teenagers, the homeless (or close to it) and the mentally impaired. Three groups not exactly known for being able to stand up for themselves or question their working conditions. I remember one time we had someone not show up, so the manager walked out to the serving area and found a homeless guy sitting at the bar nursing a coffee. The manager said, "You want a job?" and tossed the guy an apron and brought him back as-is. I AM NOT AGAINST HIRING THE HOMELESS. In fact, I'm all for it. My point was, though, this guy was literally hired without an application, interview or any of the necessary paperwork required by the state. This is just to illustrate how careless they were with hiring people and how they relied on the low end of the society totem pole, because dumb or desperate people are easy to manipulate.

I also find interesting that they mentioned in the episode itself another way they could have made money, by selling the dolls as merchandise, coupled with the money they where alredy getting wih their regular jobs they really didn't needed that scheme. Short sighted indeed. I find interesting that in Frankencreepy they chose Lyla as one of the returning villains without Roger despite the little role she had. I guess they wanted another female villain other then Mama Mione, but there wheren't other picks from this show alone, like Ms Dovley and two others from the second and third season i won't spoil. Yeah the scene with Mamba Wamba and the Roger doll confused me a lot, and i tought the zombie henchman was uncessary. He didn't add much to the episode. It's funny to see Daphne faking karate considering she would actually learn that later not only in the live action but also Samurai Sword. And i liked Shaggy and Scooby actually try to get the paper from Mamba Wamba without any incentive. It's always nice to see them act brave, even when they are still scared. Yeah, the episode has very unfortunate implications overall. It would have even made sense the bad guy was just a man offended by the cultural appriopriation of the song, but i doubt they would have do something like that at the time. In a modern episode i could see a case like that be treated as a sympatetic villain, but even then i doubt they would tackle an issue like that. I might be ignorant here, but while is nice to not have blackface, a white voodoo with doctor makes sense in any way? There where any? If not and he didn't want to get too offensive he could have at least covered his skin. I read on TV tropes a theory that this could have been an attempt at a backdor pilot for a new cartoon featuring this band and i could see that, the frog could have become the animal sidekick. But if so is a weird choise to make the only female member the villain, and so write her off. Or maybe it was a scrapped idea that they re used. Yeah, the plan of the Demon seems confused and very poorly tought out and explained. I am not really sure where the idea of him searching for treasure came from, i didn't saw it that way either. And yeah Sally really feel like an accomplice. If i had to guess, maybe they didn't want to have all suspects be villains in some way, but hey really should have polished the script. On the other hand, there have been other weird looks that didn't mean anything in the end like the hermit in the Katazuma episode, but here it really feel it had a purpouse at one point. It's possible the demon only used gloves with chemicals at some points, and then safer ones at others? I don't remember if we see the buring handprints at any point after the flashback. It does seem a bit dumb tough, if you have acces to such a "weapon", use it. The museum with old villains was nice. Probably more of a rearsh of models then an intentional callback like future ones, but it still fell that way. I just assume the demon legend wasn't real and the seal was for a different purpouse, since it's usually that way in this show. Then again Crabbe had a real spellbook, so who knows? But still no real demons came out of the ground. While i didn't knew Seattle Underground well, the way the city was portrayed here didn't felt realistic at all, and i was right. But overall yeah, pretty unimpressive villain aside for the costume. Overall i am still happy that no villain had got below a two. I feel the next two might risk a bit tough. There is another witch doctor and reused model coming, altough the bull helicopter (wich was piloted from the inside so should count as a costume in your book) could increase the score a bit, and i am not sure what the talking cow would do to it. The plan is also something we have seen before and wasn't even that good at the time, and there is a kidnapping, so... The episode also have the nice element of introducing the surname Blake, but i am sure you are gonna mention that. The Demon Shark at least had a nicer plan but maybe too convoluted, not too original (but wih some original elemnts i would say) and there is the usual issue of stealing recognizable earings and necklaces, so i am not sure how the rating is gonna be. The costume is nice but would loose at least one point for originality (altough it's crazy that it was apparently a real creature, even if dead) and i have some issues with the operation, like the fact that he doesn't seem to focus on his supposed tatget that much, but we would talk more about that in the next video.

I could totally buy the Alex Super Experience being yet another possible Scooby-Doo clone apart from the lack of animal sidekick, but I like your idea of the frog filling the role. Of course, if that was the case, they'd have to do something to make the amphibian look unique, like giving it a hat or scarf, otherwise they wouldn't be able to market it. This was still the early days of the franchise when the studio sadly felt they needed the "dumb cute girl" which was the role they assigned Daphne at the time. It got to the point that every time they show her standing up while the rest of the Gang are sitting or crouched, you're waiting for her to do something that messes up the trap. It's one thing for a red herring character to act suspicious when they're by themselves (to keep the audience guessing), but it's rare and even unhelpful to have the "innocent" side character act suspicious with the ACTUAL villain. That's just a dead giveaway Sally was supposed to have been a bad guy. While I'm still in the script stage, the next two villains featured are definitely in danger of a lower rating due to the clear lack of originality in both their design and outfits. Here's hoping they do something clever with their operation! Thanks again for watching and commenting!

It wasn't my idea for the frog, i took It from TV Tropes. One thing i forgot to comment. Yeah Scooby doo villains seems to work on tag rules, wich Is what makes me want to give credit to ones that don't do that like Peabody (he even untied himself to get away) and Mayor Dudley (who technically wasn't even caught, but there where villains that surrendered even without that like the farmer from the Davy Jones episode or the shark guys) Also Fred might not be in the spectrum here, but he definitly Is in Mystery Inc

It is always enjoyable when a villain is self-aware enough to be like, "Screw this. These are just some dumb kids. I'm outta here!" after they get caught.

They both look similar, but I think DW looks more like Creeper. One of my favorite Scooby scenes, though, is Velma loses her glasses and is fumbling on the ground for them. Creeper pops up and Fred and Daphne just run off and leave her! Like, cold man!

I loved that "special" and wouldn't rule it out, but I'd need to find a better source than what's generally been available over the years. Plus, it'd still take a while to get to as I'm still knee-deep in the older series. Thanks for watching and commenting!
