They really knew how to put together a mini concert for the whole world and how to use Freddie's charisma to entertain 1,5 billion people. They were such determined, that they have hired a theater for a week and rehearsed all the seconds of the show. Headphones are very useful. 😅

See the map of Africa behind him. Did you know he was born there in Zanzibar and lived there. When he was 8 he was sent on a boat to India where he went to an English style boarding school until he finished high school. Then went back to Africa for a short while until there was a civil war and the family left and moved to London where he went to art school and got a certificate in graphic design. Always was in some kind of band, even in boarding school. He knew he was not going to be a rock star but a legend.

Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Mercury’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star. “Queen smoked ’em. They just took everybody. They walked away being the greatest band you’d ever seen in your life, and it was unbelievable,” said Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters. “And that’s what made the band so great; that’s why they should be recognized as one of the greatest rock bands of all time, because they could connect with an audience.”

The third song is Hammer to Fall. Thumbs up for the headphones! Music of this era is always best listened to with headphones - go back to the official Bohemian Rhapsody video and re-experience that via headphones, if you haven't already.

Thanks for your great reaction! Very appropriate since July 13th will be the anniversary of Live Aid! This has been widely considered the best performance of the concert and the best performance in rock and roll history. I've seen it over 100 times and it never gets old. The song you asked about was Hammer to Fall written by guitarist Brian May. Queen agreed to perform a bit later than the other bands so they weren't on the program. They weren't sure if any of their fans would be there or what type of response they would receive. As you can see they needn't have worried, the response was overwhelming. From the moment Freddie stepped on the stage it was electricity! The band rented a theatre in London and practiced their 20 minute set over and over for weeks before the concert to make sure it was perfect! The night of the show Freddie had a throat infection and was advised by his doctor not to go on, but Freddie and the band had made the commitment so this was not even an option for them. After they came off the stage other performers said Queen had stolen the show. Some even commented to them, how can I go on now after this!

Live Aid was a fundraiser for the famine in Ethiopia. It was held in Wembley Stadium London (72,000 ppl) and JFK Stadium Philadelphia (90,000 ppl). It was televised live via about 13 satellites to over 1 billion ppl. Each stage had 3 mini stages that rotated (1 for performing, 1 for set up for next band, 1 for teardown. Each band was given 20 minutes for their set and if they went over that, the power was turned off. When 1 band finished they switched to the other location while they reset for the next group. This was NOT a Queen audience. They weren't even on the band list when tix were sold out. Queen absolutely stole the show (even Elton John, David Bowie & Bob Geldof - the organizer - admitted it). Freddie had a really bad throat infection that day and a Dr advised him not to sing. He later said singing that day felt like gargling with crushed glass, but you'd never know it from his performance. You should watch the performance of "Is This The World We Created" that just Brian & Freddie performed later in the night. The set list was: Bo Rhap - written by Freddie Mercury Radio Ga Ga - written by Roger Taylor Ey Oh - Freddie's Improv Hammer To Fall - written by Brian May Crazy Little Thing Called Love - written by Freddie Mercury We Will Rock You - written by Brian May We Are The Champions - written by Freddie Mercury

First song written by Freddie, second by Roger Taylor, third by Dr Brian May, fourth Freddie ( written in just 10 minutes) fifth written by Dr Brian May sixth Freddie as these two go back to back. Watched by over a billion worldwide and 80,000 at Wembley and another concert at the same time in America, also Freddie and Brian back around 9.45pm with Is This The World We Created, which was written a couple of years before this concert as many thought it was written for the occasion but no it had been recorded a few years previously

@@ImDarin no it was Live Aid set up by Sir Bob Geldof for the famine in South Africa back in the early 80's hence why a 20 minutes set, as you had many singers and groups playing throughout the day on both sides of the pond. Queen concerts were a good couple of hours, they recorded over 250 songs and at least 15 albums during Freddie lifetime, a couple released after he passed away and also Roger, Freddie and Brian had solo careers running alongside Queen in the early 80's at a guess over 300 songs between them and you can follow Brian, Roger even Freddie on all social media platforms they also have one for Queen and all have KZbin Channels

@@ImDarin every band were given a set amount of time as it ran the whole day, I had worked at Wembley and a couple of other places during the setup for everything, unfortunately my cousin was getting married on 13th July 1985 so I didn't work for the actual concert, you should be able too find the whole set list online for both sides of the pond, Sir Bob released names of people including Queen before he'd actually asked them, he was also in a group Boomtown Rats, fortunately or unfortunately I'm old enough too remember when Queen started, as the band as many know it now with Freddie (lead singer) Roger (drums) John (bass) Brian ( lead guitar) they all played different instruments Brian May Red Special Guitar handmade by himself and dad back in the 60's from items from their home, anything from a table, old fireplace, his mums knitting box and saddlebag on his bike now called Dr Brian May he went back to college where they met and finished his degree now Astrophysicist hence Dr, John came into the group in 1971 they'd had a few bassist beforehand in 1970 but when he joined what was formerly Smile which Roger and Brian had set up at college with the singer Tim so neither Fred or John were in it they came later, however there are a few good official documentaries online which takes you through how the group came about don't make the mistake of many by going to unofficial sites and enjoy the music we grew up with

"Freddie, what is yout favorite instrument?" - "The audience!" WHat really blows me away everytime I See this performance is the fact, that Freddie was suffering from problems with his throat and vocal chords and his doctor even adviced him not to perform.! But he did, he lived for the stage and even a sick Freddie just kicked ass! Queen were without a doubt one of the most influential bands ever! I mean, everybody heard at least "We are the champions" or "We will rock you", even without knowing these are Queen songs! And not many bands got parodies from "Wayne's World" to The Muppets, 20 to 30 years after the song was released! kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpjFf6yjj5ypp7s And besides, they were one of the most versataile bands, too, as you can see here or listen to their compilations "Greatest Hits" 1 + 2, which cover all their work from 70s to 90s and you will never guess that all these songs are from the same band because they are all so different. Plus they were one of very few bands with the same lineup for 20 years of existing because they were not only a band, but true friends.

Queen purchased some large white clocks that they positioned around their rehearsal studio. Some songs, BoRap and We Will Rock You were cut short while other songs had their tempo sped up. In fact, Brian and Roger weren’t sure if Freddie should do his usual call & response with the audience since this wasn’t a Queen concert. Of course,Freddie knew better. They were one of the few bands that rehearsed so that they could time it exactly to 20 minutes. That shows their professionalism and work ethic. The greatest rock performance of all time. Sorry, just found you; so, I’m late to the Comment Section! I’m a 66 y/o Glamma. You seem to enjoy the background of things. And, I’m a Trivia sponge, so here goes: They had just completed a Tour a month b4. So, they went & rented a Stadium to practice the performance. He ended up with a Throat Infection & the Doctor highly recommended he not do it bc he might lose his musical ability. He said no! Can you tell he had a severe throat infection? Most people think he was drinking booze from the cups bc on the piano. He’s drinking Honey & Tea. His command of the Audience was more than coincidence it was miraculous. Considering there were so many people there the sound was getting absorbed through them. So the people @ the back we’re following his hand gestures bc the actual sound hadn’t even reached them b4 the next sound was coming @ them. Go back & watch what his hands are doing & what the Audience is doing. NEXT: Radio Gaga is celebrating Radio bc M-TV is just getting started. LADY GAGA was a huge Freddie Fam growing up, so That was where she came up with HER STAGE NAME! You have to listen to the words to really understand the meaning. Most of us didn’t have a clue what a Band looked like unless we saw them in Person! NEXT-MICROPHONE. At sometime along the way a Microphone Stand broke, so that was the only spilt second solution they could come up with. He realized the freedom he had to move, dance, & engage the Audience. NEXT MICHAEL JACKSON & ELVIS CONNECTION on Song THING CALLED LOVE: It was written as his homage to Elvis-Freddie was a big fan. But, he just wasn’t sure about the song bc he didn’t want to taint Elvis. SO, he played it for Michael J. (Yes, they were friends!). And Michael told him he HAD TO, he said “Freddie, you have to”! (Can’t you just see that!?). NEXT FREDDIE’s VOICE. HE HAD 4 extra teeth so that’s the reason he had such an overbite. He had the ability to naturally flow from Octave to Octave. It was a natural progression, for him. SCIENTIFICALLY: Test were done on his Voice. He was able to use his Throat muscles on either side of his vocal cords. Which is normally seen in some Opera Singers. His Vocal Range was from Low Bass F, to High Soprano F! They were extremely surprised to find out that he could go from about 92Hz to 784Hz, effortlessly! See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW: nyone who has listened to a Queen track knows that Freddie has a unique ability that still has not been truly replicated since. His ability to blend highs, lows and mid range notes cohesively and with immense precision. This skill was due to the fact that Freddie was able to create faster vibrato and harmonics than any other singer at the time. Not only this, he was able to shift through registers effortlessly. Although he naturally held a baritone voice, he primarily sang as a tenor and of course had no problem then shifting into soprano parts. One study on Freddie’s vocal range even confirmed that he was able to vary from about 92.2 Hz to 784 Hz, meaning he was reliably able to hit notes from the booming low of F#2 to the high pitch G5 - that covers a full three octaves! LAST FUN FACT: His Lead Guitarist is playing on a Guitar he & his Father made. When he first starting to learn they were too poor to afford a high end guitar. So, they just made one! The included some “extras” that would normally have to be separate instruments to get all those features (think Concerts when you see guitarist changing Guitars depending on the Song….that’s why he didn’t)! I’m sorry to take up your Valuable Time, and I thank you. You need anymore Trivia I’m your G’Ma go to. My Brain is full, especially with music, & believe it or not Sports! (When he is waving his arm it is to tell the cameramen which way he is going bc he’s moving around so much. And, “We Will Rock You”, is actually a Prelude to “We Are The Champions”. It is actually all 1 Song!) LEAD GUITARIST: Brian May’s family couldn’t afford a Guitar so he & his Dad made it from an old Cabinet. Because they were making it there are a lot of extra features that he wanted. It is truly a “one of a kind”!
