desert warfare is the most difficult as they are no optimal defenses available, such as natural barriers or hideouts, which a land-based army can use to play hide and seek, make pincer moves, camouflage and protect their trenches, defend their armored and mechanized (motorized) assets from the air and artillery bombardment, save infantrymen aka foot soldiers and logistic positions! Iraq lost both Gulf war 1 and 2 because their armies were left completely exposed in the desert against many superior forces. I think military science experts should address as to how land-based armed forces can cover their Flanks in context of desert warfare.

LOL, I thought it was the easiest. Jungle, by far the hardest. Arctic, you have to give up a lot of tactical habits for sustainability. Desert, by far the easiest in my opinion. I have the impression you were never a soldier?

Professional British soldiers the best in the world without a dought. Now we don't like giving it lip service we just get on with it and get it done in an aggressive manner.

No mate we don't, typical government to cut the forces they have done for years whatever party is in power. If we get below 70k in the British army we might end up being a defence force. We should have around 150k in the British army that's not including reservists.

There is also a massive psychological factor in watching the enemy closing in, red faced and furious, wanting nothing more than to implale you on 13 long inches of British sharp steel. You can Google about a story with recent relevance, a Scottish regiment were struck by an IED and there armoured foxhound was disabled. They had run out of ammunition so the order to fix bayonets was given. They charged towards the drainage ditch that the Taliban were hiding in and fought close quarters and didn't lose a single soldier. Plus we can all agree they look really fucking cool?
