Watching BPs confusion was great!😂 Tub thumping doesn't have to be about politics and can just be getting noisy or raucous. The song's about working class Brits resilience. They get knocked down but get back up, have a drink and sing, and think about the good and the best times.😊

Isn't it crazy what a difference in perspective a few decades does to a song? When this song was new, I was sure it's just a drinking song with a catchy hook. Also as you say a celebration of not giving up. And although we saw what you describe as the "rainbow community" in the video, that was a reflection of what we saw in the clubs too so it didn't seem out of place or not to make sense. Today you see this video and react to the song and there seems to be so much more focus on that "rainbow community" when really it didn't matter at all to any of us 30 years ago.

30 years ago, people acted as if trans people didn't exist, and they were only mentioned as the butt of a joke. Chumbawamba had a song called Homophobia, about the horrific abuse gay people were getting at the height of the AIDS epidemic. Sexual orientation mattered to the mainstream media and they would always point out someone's sexuality as some sort of scandal. It wasn't long since being gay was illegal, so those attitudes took a long time to fade. I think the shift that you're talking about is that the more people are openly trans, the more we hear the negative feedback.
@stevekile19192 күн бұрын
Boff Whalley (Chumbawamba’s lead guitarist), confirmed the above. According to him, the song was inspired by an Irish neighbor of theirs. This neighbor would often return home completely drunk and would fall over while trying to get into his house. However, he apparently would get up again and not give up on his quest to get into the house. And that’s likely where the band got the inspiration for the line: “I get knocked down but I get up again…“. Owing to the above, it is so clear that this same neighbor is the one the narrators are talking about throughout the song when they say he drinks all manners of alcoholic beverages and sings songs that remind him of both the good and bad times.
@lindaewart56912 күн бұрын
Not specifically political. You have been thrown off the track by that definition. It does not apply. It's a party. It's about getting drunk. It's about being resilient in the face of troubles. That's it you're reading way too much into it man it has nothing to do with sports it's about people knocking you down and you getting back up in their faces........ you try to make more of it than it is

Right, unless I've quantum leaped here from an alternate reality, I am 100% sure (as my head is full of pointless, obscure facts 😅) that "Don't cry for me nextdoor neighbour" comes from a comedy parody by some forgotten comedian (or duo?) in the late 70s - early 80s. Someone like 'Little & Large' or 'The Chuckle Brothers'. I'm pretty sure they performed it on their show and it became a one-hit-wonder single. I definitely remember thinking the first time I heard Tubthumping I thought that's clever on so many levels as the parody was funny the first time you hear it, but just a bit annoying on repeat listens 😅 However, drunk, in the pub at 10.30 people still sang it thinking it was funny! But for the first time ever, I can't find reference to the original anywhere! I'll keep trying though because I feel like I'm going bonkers! 😩🤣

It was inspired by a night when the guitarist Boff Whalley and his wife watched their drunken next-door neighbor singing "Danny Boy" while stumbling to his front door. Eventually, he found his way into his house. Thus, the song became about presaverance. And that's how it happened 👍

It’s just about a night out, people drink, talk, argue, sing. Being pissed is being drunk, pissing the night away is drinking the night away. Not necessarily getting wasted, but drinking etc. the ladies rooms at the pub or club is about the same, the spaces are separate ( except when there’s not enough space given to a ladies room, common in old buildings, and so we use the gents room too until some man needs it) so men in there was just style points on the video. In a small pub there’s likely one all purpose single seater, but girls will still share the time in there, taking turns at the toilet, sink, mirror. Sharing makeup, holding each others hair back if vomiting.

This is a huge difference between nights out in the UK and USA. Bars in the US are essentially pick-up places. There isn’t a sense of playfulness at all, or people just talking to each other. Being resilient. You get knocked down, you get up again. Huge British drinking anthem - everyone joins in on the chorus. So damn catchy. "Pissing the night away" has two meanings - being drunk, yes, but also wasting time.

This is their most "reviewed" song, but they have better ones IMO. "Homophobia", "Farewell to the Crown", "Big Mouth Strikes Again", "We Don't Go to God's House Anymore", and "The Old Barbed Wire". It took the band almost 20 years to get a song that would be played on the radio and become popular. After this album, half the group left while the remaining four members continued making albums using acoustic guitars.

Chumbawamba are the real deal, and this is about the working class, resiliancy, it is an anthem and a celebration, but I think there is also a warning to not let alcohol and good feelings distract us from the need for change. Amnesia is another one of my favorites from this album. While they were part of the 90's Chumbawamba didn't become overly popular here in the states as this cd was the only album most people knew about, including myself. Tubthumping was also the one song mostly played on the radio. The radio stations didn't really play very many of their songs. I think Amnesia is the only other Chumbawamba song the radio ever played. 90% of the time it was Tubthumping playing.

I always took "tubthumping" as not a literal definition as you just looked up. Tubthumping is British slang for being vocal and boisterous. In America, we would yell, "let's get this party started!!" This song is just a celebration of drinking with friends and living for the moment.

Yes, I think in a weird and very American way he got this song more or less inside out. When he said “it’s about the rainbow community overcoming hardship” I just sighed. From the 1970s to 1990s in Britain, it was a sense of ordinary people EXPANDING our sense of community to include everyone that the Establishment - wealthy respectable types - had always made written and unwritten laws to reject and control. About acknowledging and fully accepting that what he calls “the rainbow community” - and other minorities- already are our friends and neighbours. Working class people refusing to be split apart into groups pitched against each other. And everyone having a good time whether wealthier people approve or not.

While tubthumping has its origins in politics, its meaning has evolved to anybody basically expressing an opinion loudly and vigorously. A similar expression would be “getting on your soapbox” from when politicians would stand on a box/platform to deliver a speech. “Tubs” is slang for drums, so if you are tub thumping, you are banging a drum to get attention for your message. I hope that clarifies for you a bit. Others in the comments have mentioned the rest of the allusions, pissed/ drunk etc.

Another one of those songs where cultural differences cause huge confusion across the pond 😂 The list of drinks at the start I take as a reference to a quaint British habit of mixing different drinks (Pissing the night away) to get pissed as a newt/ drunk as a skunk etc, then being involved in fights (Getting knocked down and back up again), and ending up singing ( Danny Boy, a well known old Irish lament) to the world in general.

In both the US and in Britain, town meetings and political rallies were often held in large public spaces, like bars. It kept the meetings short because the bar couldn’t start serving until it was over, though I think the Irish would be a little more liberal about it and the “tub thumping” got more enthusiastic with round of drinks.

My opinion is that this is kind of an anthem/protest song ... no matter how bad "The World" screws you over you can always go "pub-crawling" and hang with your friends. The song is deceptively simple ... because you're supposed to sing it while you're drunk. And "tubthumping" can also be seen as "getting on your soap-box" or "preaching to the choir"... you WILL be heard. What I remember, from the clubs, this song involved a lot of people jumping up and down while fist-pumping ... IYKYK. . And, looking over the comments ... a lot of people agree with me, so I guess I am "preaching to the choir" ... lol.

I never knew what it was all about. I just connected with the "gettin' knocked down and gettin' back up again." I never even paid attention to the "pissin the night away' because I've heard that term. Even though I'm from Texas, I never got hung up on that. It was a fun song to me.

The title derives from British slang for aggressive political protesting. It was inspired by a night when guitarist Boff Whalley and his wife watched their drunken next-door neighbor singing “Danny Boy” while stumbling to open his front door. Eventually, he found his way inside the house. Thus, the song became about perseverance.

Been a while since I heard this. LOVE IT! If you haven't reacted to it yet, try OMC's "How Bizarre".

"Chumbawamba" was Frodo's Ewok name when he was deployed on the U.S.S. Enterprise.

This song was apparently inspired by a old guy the band lived next-door to. The guy was an alcoholic and the band would frequently hear him at night getting drunk and falling over.

When this song hit the US, it was everywhere, being played constantly on the radio... Another of Chumbawamba's songs I really enjoy is called Amnesia

My Poppop used to sing along to this & his lyrics were my favorite. “I get no cow, but I get up again, you’re never gonna get no cow.”

Oh Danny Boy is an old Irish song often sung in bars, hence, he sings the songs that remind him of the good times.

Tubthumping was one of my favorites from the moment it came out. It gave me saturday night at the bar vibes. Now it makes sense as in the politics of saturday night. lol

This, along with Pulp's 'Common People', are Working Class anthems in the UK, both highlighting the fact that whatever the powers that be throw at us the Working Class will adapt, improvise & overcome, spirit unbroken.

Saw em live in Dudley in the Black Country UK ,Mid 1990s Brilliant night , man we got pissed that night . Its title derives from British slang for aggressive political protesting. America kinda lost out with Chumbawamba in the sense that Tubthumping was really the only song of theirs to make it here. They have a REALLY good library of excellent songs though. Even a lot of folk songs believe it or not. I would very highly recommend "El Fusilado"; a true story of Wenceslao Moguel. Although... I would recommend The Longest John's version of the song even more because I'm incredibly biased. XD

Party anthem of the 90's. Pissed a lot of nights away! Pissed in England means to be drunk and in the US it is to be angry. They are a British band so they are drunk. Tubthumping is the equivalent to campaigning. I read that the group got its name from a member who told a story about Chumbas (men) and Wumbas (women) and they took their name from it. Crazy shit! Getting pissed will bring about some crazy shit.
