She grew up 1 of 12 children in a 1-room cabin. This song is so beloved that The Smithsonian asked her to donate the coat. Neither she nor her mama knew what had happened to it. Undoubtedly, it had been worn & passed down so many times that it had been reduced to rags again. So her mama made another 1 for display at The Smithsonian.

Thanks for that information. There is a black and white photo of Dolly that was taken that day at school. She is smiling even with both eyes full of tears. I own the album Coat of Many Colors and that black and white picture was used on the reverse side of the album, while the front has a photo of a painting done of the same image but with colors added. I'm glad to know that the Smithsonian will preserve that replica of a coat already immortalized by the song and a children's book written by Dolly and often used by teachers in discussions about bullying.

I’m from Southeastern Kentucky and my Grandmother made quilts of old pieces of material from various things. Before my Great grandmother passed away she told Grandmother to use her old dresses to make quilts. I have a few of my Grandmother’s quilts and so does my mother. My Aunt used to crochet and I have quite a bit of things she crocheted for me, throws, scarfs, and table cloths. I cherish them all.

I really appreciated your reaction to this song. You are a very thoughtful, insightful dude. Dolly Parton has written almost 4,000 songs -- most of them truly beautiful. Any list of the world's most talented, charitable and impactful women would have to include Dolly in the top five. You mentioned her nails and her general appearance and it reminded me of time she laughingly told an interviewer, "It takes a lot of money to look this cheap."

I would highly recommend Christmas Of Many Colors movie as a family Christmas movie! It’s based upon this song and Dolly’s childhood. Dolly was my momma’s favorite singer and this her favorite song. My momma grew up very poor…thirteen kids (seven boys and six girls). She said this song reminded her of how she grew up. Lots of hand me downs. Christmas was: a doll, an apple, an orange and a peppermint candy. They knew they were poor; but that little home was filled with laughter, love, music, God…and of course the kids fighting with each other at times.

Dolly over the years has taken on some of the most serious issues facing society in her music. This one, discrimination against the poor. Other examples off the top of my head.....absent father's, Down From Dover. Child abuse/neglect, Me and Little Andy. Too many to mention. Either of those would make the hardest man cry. PEECEPTION is everything! What you think of yourself, of others, of the world around you, means much more than what others think. No two people will see things the same way. It is human nature. What your own perception consists of is your version of TRUTH. To be able to share your perceptions with others effectively is what art is. Others may or may not see it the same way, but you have allowed them to see your truth. That is what is important, and that's what Dolly did, in and with this song. ❤

I thought you might relate to this one being an artist yourself.

I cried. I always cry with this one. What you said, it's true. About the awareness when you're young. I remember being that kid, made fun of, and I just could not understand what folks were going on about. I'd try to tell them. They didn't wanna listen. I will say, it is human nature to individuate, to form cliques and groups, but I don't think this generation is worse. I think they're the most inclusive, most accepting, most socially educated generation in history. And I hope that means a new world for them and for their descendants.
