Rob Thomas wrote this about when his mother was fighting cancer. Maybe sleeps when it’s raining is that the rain sounds soothed her. And 3 am is a funny time of day, I am a nurse, and for some reason many people wake at that hour and worry about things. It’s also the time on a night shift when you start to feel the most tired. Also, 3 am is often a time when people do pass away 🙏🏼

The live version of that when he explains the meaning of the song is beyond good. Its a tough watch for someone who went thru that with their own mom.

My Momma was a WARRIOR!! Dx with cancer and given 3 months to live in 1987. She battled through everything they threw at her, the chemo, the ridiculous amounts of radiation, the surgeries. Was cleared of that cancer, only to get another completely different kind. Battled through that one, too! But, very sadly and much to my dismay and completely shattered heart, she passed in 2005 from septic shock. 😢 She beat cancers ass TWICE and the damn infection/s took her away from us. I miss her more than mere words could begin to convey. RIP Mom with all my respect and love 🖤

He did. He's Rob Thomas, he sang "Smooth" with Santana. Inescapable hit about 25 summers ago. He wrote his about being a teenager and having a Mom who was an alcoholic and was diagnosed with lymphoma. Other Matchbox Twenty songs are "If You're Gone", "Bright Lights". Wendy's - Dave Thomas. In D.C. until recently we had a convoluted intersection with a Wendy's in the middle, so everyone called it Dave Thomas Circle.

Their biggest song "Push" got them a lot of flack when it hit the radio because conservatives thought it was a man beating his girlfriend (somehow, the lyrics don't really allude to that) when it's the other way around, he wrote it about an abusive relationship he himself was in. Also "The Real World", "Unwell" and "How Far We've Come" are fantastic songs, too!

You know I just turned 61, and this whole album is one I consider as required in any collection. It's that powerful as a whole. Add Guns & Roses Appetites for Destruction. Willie Nelson and Family Live, the double album is absolute fire. Delbert McClinton, The Ultimate Collection. There are many from over the years that are just required if you consider yourself a lover if music, no matter the genre. I can take a person on a journey. I was born in Gallatin, TN. In the US Navy from '81 to '87. Exposed to country, motown, blues, southern classic and alternative rock. Gospel, contemporary Christian, bluegrass, folk, and whatever is in between, including rap, hip-hop, and pop. Genre does not matter, I just want music that makes me feel something. If it makes me feel like moving, crying, laughing, or gets me to examine my life, motivations, and perspective, then it has done what it's supposed to do. Thank you for your genuine reactions, Black Pegasus, and for looking for the meaning and context of the lyrics, as well as just jamming out when necessary ❤

It’s Crazy to think how much influence the Album August and Everything After from Counting Crows, would have on bands like Matchbox Twenty! But this band is amazing in their own right! So many Great songs in their catalog ❤️

Dude, if you ever get the chance, check out their live performances. Rob Thomas is just as good live, and he leaves EVERYTHING out on the stage. The dude is singing from such a deep place, he’s DRENCHED in sweat by the end of basically every performance.

You must react to all their top songs. You will fall in love with them. Saw them live many times and one show he did some of his songs acoustically. They and Rob Thomas are a great band to see live, and they still tour.

❤Love these guys. Bent is my favorite MB20 but it is all so good. Their 1st album 1996 produced 5 top 40 singles and they were on the charts through 1998. Not many artist make that top hits in a career much less their 1st album. Rob Thomas wrote this about living with his mom as she battled cancer. Sometimes when you are ill you sleep most of the day and as a result you wake at the very early morning hours.

❤❤I had the pleasure of seeing/hearing them in concert 20+ years ago. Rob Thomas is VERY talented, and well rounded. Excellent lyricist, vocalist, pianist. BP...you should check out their song HANG. It's a slower song, and never really got radio exposure. It's one of my favorites by them though.

Man, that first guitar lick sends me straight back to 1998. I had this album on repeat (Yourself Or Someone Like You) and this song was one of my favorites besides "Push" and "Real World" and "Long Day". Highschool was a fun time in the late 90s man lol.

Saw these guys on their first tour on St. Paddy’s day at a dingy grunge bar in Calgary, Canada - had no idea who they were at the time. Got busted by Rob’s mom smoking a little pot with him in the driveway before the show, super chill guy back then, and even at the start it was obvious how crazy talented he is. Watching them blow up after that wasn’t surprising at all.
