Michael and Patti Labelle "On my own" is a must watch. Two stunning voices and a duet. The two performers were in separate cities when they recorded their individual parts, which were then "married" during mixing. Phenomenal recording it will blow you away.

He was 30 years old. Born in 1952; this song was released in 1982. Michael H. McDonald (born February 12, 1952) is an American singer, keyboardist and songwriter known for his distinctive, soulful voice and as a member of Steely Dan (1973-1974), and the Doobie Brothers (1975-1982, 1987, 2019-present). McDonald wrote and sang several hit singles with the Doobie Brothers, including "What a Fool Believes", "Minute by Minute", and "Takin' It to the Streets." McDonald has also performed as a prominent backing vocalist on numerous recordings by artists including Steely Dan, Christopher Cross, and Kenny Loggins. McDonald's solo career consists of nine studio albums and a number of singles, including the 1982 hit "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)". During his career, McDonald has collaborated with a number of other artists, including James Ingram, David Cassidy, Van Halen, Patti LaBelle, Lee Ritenour, The Winans, Aretha Franklin, Toto,[2] Grizzly Bear,[3] Joni Mitchell, and Thundercat. He has also recorded for television and film soundtracks. McDonald is the recipient of five Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Doobie Brothers in 2020.

Guys, there’s a huge difference between sampling and doing a cover. At least when you’re doing a cover you’re actually playing your own instruments and singing your own vocals. I guess we had generations of people who had musical talent. When we stopped teaching real music, music theory, in schools we lost the ability for people to create their own music. Now we have “sampling”.

He went solo after that with his "blue-eyed soul". The Doobie Brothers just did a 50th Anniversary tour. I saw them last summer, 3rd row. The venue was packed full. You couldn't fit another person. McDonald was there with the band. They were so solid, sounded like off the vinyl! If McDonald hadn't toured with them, I probably wouldn't have gone (Even though seeing them, I would've loved it any way). Top notch!

The difference between sampling and playing a cover is that the sample is using the magic created by the original artist. Playing the cover is using your own skills to recreate the same magic. Same as painting a picture with brushes and canvas based on a great painting, as opposed to simply printing a photo of the original painting onto canvas. It’s completely different.
