REO Speedwagon (REO pronounced as individual letters) was a light motor truck first produced in 1915, and manufactured up until the 1950s. The R.E.O. Speedwagon was the ancestor of the pickup truck, and the letters R.E.O. come from Ransom E. Olds who designed the truck, and was the founder of Oldsmobile.

REO Speedwagon was one of the first rock bands to score big with power ballads in the '80s. They had the good fortune of being one of the hottest bands in America when MTV launched on August 1, 1981, so the network played their videos, even though they were low-budget affairs. With director Bruce Gowers, they shot four videos in one day, including the clip for one of their greatest songs "Keep On Loving You," which lead singer Kevin Cronin said "made us look like even bigger dorks than we were." 😅

REO Speedwagon are from Champaign, Illinois. I saw REO live in concert March 22, 2024. These guys rocked the house. REO is one of those bands who sound better live than on the record. If REO comes to your area, please make plans to go. You'll have a great time. When most groups disbanded, or stopped touring altogether, REO Speedwagon never stopped touring. They have been going hard at it for 50 years or more, year after year. Kevin Cronin is the lead singer, and he will be 73 years old in October. He still sounds good and his guitar playing is still on point. They are currently on tour with Train, when I saw them they were touring with Rick Springfield who also rocked the house as well. One of the best concerts I've been to. Their lead guitar player the late great Gary Richrath is by far the best guitar player out of all the rest, who has never gotten the credit or recognition which he deserves. Kevin Cronin, when he sings, his proper enunciation of his words when he sings is fantastic (mind blowing to most), (listen to Roll With The Changes and you'll hear what I'm talking about). Which makes him such a great singer. Do check out Roll With The Changes (a great driving down the road song), Keep On Loving You (a number 1 song on the charts, also Can't Fight This Feeling reached number 1 on the charts as well), Take It On The Run, Time For Me To Fly, One Lonely Night, Don't Let Him Go, That Ain't Love, Keep Pushin', Ridin' The Storm Out (written by Gary Richrath after they were snowed in during a snow storm in Colorado after a show), Golden Country, Live Every Moment, Variety Tonight, In Your Letter, Here With Me, Back On The Road Again (Bassist Bruce Hall wrote this song and does the lead vocals on this song). The list of REO Speedwagon songs is deep. Ride the storm out with REO, more songs for you to add to your playlist (GAURANTEED).

"Ridin' the Storm Out", "Keep Pushin'", "Roll With the Changes", "Time for Me to Fly", "Take It on the Run", "In My Dreams", "Don't Let Him Go", "That Ain't Love", and "Here with Me" are a few. I don't usually remember the names of albums, but their 7th album released in 1978 is one I always remember for it's wacky title: You Can Tune a Piano, But You Can't Tuna Fish. The cover art is a large fish with a tuning fork stuck in it's open mouth. Apparently the band wanted a title that would match the "out of the box" and stylistically diverse songs on the album.

I knew Gary Richrath from 1965 in Peoria, IL when he was a member of the Suburban 9 to 5. When I was a student at Eastern Illinois University in 1970 - 1974 I would drive up to Champaign to see REO Speedwagon at Chances R, a college bar. When the band released their first album, with Terry Luttrell on lead vocals, Circus Magazine gave it a full 5 star rating, stating " Play it 'tiĺ the grooves wear out". When REO Two came out, with Kevin Cronin on vocals, every song was great. I still don't know why the album wasn't a smash hit. Kevin left and the third album, Lost in a Dream, had Michael Murphy on lead vocals. "Ridin' the Storm Out" was released, but wasn't a hit. Michael left and Kevin returned. Only with the release of their live double album, You Get What You Play For, after endless touring, did the band achieve real success. I grew to resent Kevin Cronin because he took the hard rock edge off of REO and pushed the band into the ballad era. I now recognize that the radio format dictated the need, as the ladies love of ballads drove sales and hits. Ultimately, Kevin's direction was correct, but Gary slipped in as many hard edges as he could. If you want to hear the best of Gary and REO, listen to REO TWO, and the live album. Especially the song "Golden Country".

My absolute favorite band from my high-school days, and I still love 'em 40 years later! And you think this video is weird, check out the one they did for I Do' Wanna Know. 😂

Great reaction! I'm a 68 year old female. I remember this song back in the day. Good song but not one of my favorites. You had me laughing all the way through this! Thanks for the smiles!

Saw these guys live, finally, a while back. Huge sound live and one of those bands you know all of the songs' words without really thinking about it. Lot of my music comes from a couple of my aunts that weren't shockingly older than me and friends whose older sisters who had sizable music collections. REO has a ton of really great songs.

Champaign Illinois’ finest! My uncle used to room with a couple of these guys when he got back from Vietnam. An incredibly underrated band!

REO Speedwagon was my very first concert and were a different band from when this song was released. Oh and the band Angel opened for them back in 1978. Anyway you should react to the Angel song called "The Fortune". Quite the journey of a song.
