The rocket Stewart is drumming on is a Saturn V that launched the Apollo missions. The Police used a lot of Reggae influence in their music. Rick Beato does a great analysis of this song with interviews of Sting, Stewart Copeland, and Andy Summers. Check it out. They only put out five albums between 1978 and 1983 and all of them are great.

Stewart Copeland has said many times that He's not a musician and the that he doesn't know an A note from a G note. He said, I just show up and I bang on sh@t! I'm paraphrasing here, but that's the gist of what he said. I always loved his drumming style and he was a big influence on me playing the drums. I saw them on the Synchronicity tour. His drum kit was tiny compared to a lot of other big name band drummers of the time. But he played the heck out of it.

S-Tier drum work...Stewart Copeland is considered one of the BEST rock drummers EVER. He has his own YT channel now that he scores movie soundtracks. You recently did a Rick Beato reaction. Beato interviewed Copeland and he said that almost EVERY album track on their records was from their first or second take. They were such masters that their first play through was platinum record quality. Sting on vocals and Bass, Andy Sommers on Guitar, Copeland on Drums. They released FIVE albums which went 1x Platinum, 1x Platinum, 2x Platinum, 3x Platinum, 8x Platinum....broke up due to fighting between Sting and Copeland beefing over money

As a pub band in London they shared rehearsal spaces, equipment & PA's with reggae bands & more than a little of that bled into their sound. The Clash occasionally drifted into reggae for the same reason.

The Police are incredible! A trio of very talented artists - Sting (bass/singer), Andy Summers (guitar) and Steward Copeland (Drums). So many great songs in their short 9 year life span of a career as a band. This song's bass riff is incredible. Their music is a mix of reggae, jazz, funk, punk, and world music. They mixed up a number of styles. The song is about love and the feeling of not having gravity. He floated home from her house. So simple and yet so perfect! The three were characters. You can see it in this video and in videos for songs like - "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic", "Roxanne" and "Don't Stand So Close to Me". The album SYNCHRONICITY was huge and then they broke up. Check out the song - "Synchronicity II".

It was fascinating listening to Stewart Copeland talking about his drumming influences and style on the recent Drumeo release - he talks about the Baladi style he was surrounded by growing up in Lebanon. So apparently while it meshes really well, rhythmically, with the reggae style the Police often use, the drumming influence comes from a completely different cultural background. Pretty neat :)

Sting [Gordon Sumner ], the bassist, singer & principal lyricist had been a teacher before becoming a full time musician. 'Don't Stand So Close to Me ' is about the 'problems' of a young male teacher, when the girls in his class basically start hitting on him. He seems to be a good boy, but does manage to shoehorn 'Nabokov [ author of 'Lolita' ] into the lyrics.

Amazing band. So many great songs. This one is special for me; fell head over heals for a girl and after weeks of "woo'ing" we finally went out on a date after which I got a passionate kiss and "that look". I literally staggered my way to my car, not because I was drunk or on drugs, but hit square between the eyes with love. Driving home this song came on the radio and I got it, I too was walking on the moon. I was so high in love I felt like I was weightless, like "my feet dont touch the ground". That singular moment will live with me forever. Sadly, she and I were not to be but happily I was able to meet the woman who didn't steal my heart but embrace it and keep it safe, 37 years on now and she is still here by my side. Life is like that sometimes.

This was one of their songs that caused me to buy the entire album! (Back in the days when albums were on LP records.) I've always thought of this as straight-up reggae; ska is usually faster and has the horns added. But I'm far from an expert, so who knows? Sooooo many great Police songs you haven't yet heard! "Don't Stand So Close to Me" is catchy and tells an unsavory story. The Police's very first album was Outlandos d'Amour and it had the songs "Roxanne", "So Lonely", and "Can't Stand Losing You" on it. The Regatta de Blanc album yielded "Message in a Bottle" and this little gem. Several good songs on Zenyatta Mondata: "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da", "Canary in a Coalmine", "Driven to Tears", "When the World is Running Down", and "Bombs Away". The Synchronicity album was full of hits and great songs: the title song and "Synchronicity II" (which I like better than the title one; very interesting lyrics), "Every Breath You Take", "King of Pain" and "Wrapped Around Your Finger" were all on that album. By the time their Ghost in the Machine album came out, they were cranking out hit after hit. "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic", "Spirits in the Material World", "Invisible Sun", "Demolition Man", and "Rehumanize Yourself" are all on that one.
