We won't see the likes of Luciano Pavarotti again in our lifetimes. To have the 3 of them singing and joking together was pure magic. People forget that opera - like Shakespeare - was written for the masses. Thanks for playing this & your comments.

As someone else said , Carreras was just recovering from leukemia. He spent quite some time in a germ proof isolation room and other singers would visit him, which did happen, and would ask what they could do for him his answer was always, ' Do a concert and give all. I mean ALL, of the proceeds to cancer research or to the hospitals to build these rooms!" He really believed it saved his life he didn't stop there. If a week or so passed and he had not heard any movement by that artist to do a concert, he would pick up the phone and call them, "And when is your cancer concert? " He did not let a single soul off on their promise!

Verdi lived from 1813-1901 so this WAS a drinking song from an opera called La Taviata written in 1853....so this is 171 year old drinking song. There were drinks king songs back in the Middle Ages and Ancient Greece and Rome too

The 3 tenors were not "a group", but 3 individual tenors who decided to gang up and give concerts all over the world (I think they performed in the USA too), for the fun of it. Sadly, Luciano Pavarotti passed away in 2007. The "drinking song" is indeed the introduction to "La Traviata" by Giuseppe Verdi. The scene is at a party given by the main character, Violetta, a "kept woman".

Each of them was considered the best living operatic tenor singers, and the idea came about that they could do some appearances together at major sports events, and do benefit concerts for charities. They toured together from about 1990-2003, and expanded the different types of music they performed (which occasionally upset opera purists.) Pavarotti is Italian and the other two are Spanish.

All three are incredible for sure, but I think we can credit Pavarotti for introducing opera to many Americans who wouldn't have gone to a traditional concert His personality and willingness to be on TV shows introduced him to the masses. I loved hearing all of them individually, but together it's raised to a different level

Fun fact: The arranger of this concert that was mentioned, Lalo Shiffrin, is also the composer of the themes from the Mission Impossible and Mannix TV shows back in the 60’s as well as the scores to the movies Bullitt, Enter the Dragon, Cool Hand Luke, The Amityville Horror, and the Rush Hour Trilogy to name a few. He is also five-time Grammy award winner as well as being nominated for six Academy Awards and for Emmy awards. Real big name in film and TV scoring.

Even if the lyrics sound light-hearted, this in a excerpt from the tragic opera "La Traviata" from 19Th century Italian maestro composer Giuseppe Verdi. He was so hugely revered that his face was portrayed on our most used banknote for ages before Italian "Lira" merged in the Euro currency in 2002. The "Three Tenors" tour was a successful attempt to bring back opera music to the people after decades when it had been relegated to music for a narrow niche of audiophiles snobs. After the tour, other singers meet unexpected success even in the US, for example Andrea Bocelli with his global opera hit "Con te partirò" (I will leave with you). Jose Carreras and even more Placido Domingo were great tenors but Pavarotti was something else. You should see him duet with James Brown, amazing performance! R.I.P. Big Luciano.

You understood it perfectly. It's from the opera 'La Traviata." and is always sung in a room where a party is in full swing. The opera has its tragedies and dramas but this song is meant to set a fun atmosphere. It's wonderful to see the opera live. Maybe you and your wife will get to experience opera live one day. The three tenors are not a group or band. They are each some of the most famous tenors who ever lived and performed operas or individual performances. This was a special setup they performed and the whole thing is awesome. We've lost Pavarotti (RIP) but the other two are still out there. A few years ago I had the privilege of attending an opera with Placido Domingo, who is my favorite of the three. SO GLAD you're enjoying opera. It does something to the soul that is different than other forms of music and while I'm not saying it's better, it's so worth experiencing. And now it's time for a famous female singer. Frederica von Stade singing "Non so più" from 'Nozze di Figaro' by Mozart. In this opera she plays an adolescent boy whose voice hasn't dropped yet. Just listen to her vocal control in this aria! It's legendary! kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWm2dWqVo7ahqaM&ab_channel=rexeterna

This is the drinking (toast) song from Giuseppe Verdi's opera "La Traviata" (The Fallen Woman). It is based on "La Dame aux camélias" (The Lady of the Camellias, 1852), a play by Alexandre Dumas fils (Junior), which he adapted from his own 1848 novel. You probably know his father- Alexandre Dumas, the author of The Three Musketeers.

Placido Domingo also used to do a number of holiday concerts in Vienna, Austria, with powerful modern singers, like Celine Dion, Shirley Bassey and so on. He also covered a John Denver song, "Perhaps Love" (as a duet) and won a total of 14 Grammys, as well as other awards (like a Golden Globe) for his opera films. I once had the opportunity to see a live concert -- I never was so miffed at how little I know about Italian opera, especially Verdi (who wrote "Brindisi") and Puccini. Back in the 1980s, he also took part in a recording of "Aida", one of THE great operas, filmed at the original locations around Verona, Italy. One of the best voices ever, and a wonderful performer! José Carreras founded/runs a charity for people suffering with leukemia.

Opera was the musical theater of its day, like Broadway musicals are now. Plays, with music. Some operas are tragedies and some are comedies. This wasn't just some drinking song that people sang in bars. It was written by Verdi for a drinking scene in the opera La Traviata. The conductor, Zubin Mehta, was the musical director/conductor of the NY Philharmonic Orchestra from 1978-1991. He has also been the musical director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the LA Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic.

You should look up Andre Rieu he’s a conductor that travels with an orchestra and they mostly just perform songs that remind people classical music was meant to be fun and not completely stuffy and boring. It’s a great option (along with movie composers like John Williams in concert) to realize people have always enjoyed having fun through the centuries. Look up Andre Rieu & Amira “O Mio Babbino Caro.” Also his “Song of Olympia” really anything he’s conducted will make you impressed with the talent he brings together and have a lot of feelings. I was looking for a specific one but those 2 distracted me. Also suggestion of specific classical pieces to look up to emphasize that people have always been similar through the centuries look up Mozart’s “Leck Mich” find one without the English translation on screen first and then find one with it translated.

Thank you so much. Brings back great memories. My husband used to listen to the three tenors while working on his Mustang.❤

The Star Spangled Banner was a drinking song. This whole concert and the OG 3 Tenors concert in Italy are priceless musical artifacts. Each singer brought their A Game, even Carreras, who was recovering from cancer treatment. You have to see their rendition of 'O Sole Mio', where they troll each other's performance.. I don't want to over-fansplain it, but they have an absolute blast singing together.

Can I blow your mind? Look up John Denver and one of the 3 tenors Placido Damingo Perhaps Love it's beautiful. As you have just reacted to both.

YES!!!! I am SO glad that you reacted to this three tenors performance! The playful comraderie is so much fun to watch, let alone listen to. I do not know the name of the song from this performance, but there is one where they are being competitive and it’s wonderful! ❤
