@@dirkguijt2810 I fucking love Tool it's one of my fav bands ever, and they have played some of the best live shows I've ever seen in my life. They are not for everyone. Other music is absolutely art, including pop, and everything else. Just because it is ubiquitous does not mean it is bad. When I was younger, I thought pop was trash music, now I can appreciate it when my wife is having the time of her life to it lol, even though I prefer things like Jazz, Rap, Classical, Funk, Rock, and Metal. I think Tool is mind blowing, she can hear that it is very intricate and complex, but she just doesn't like it. Totally fair.

That “feeling” is a time signature. Hip/hop is in 4/4, as is most pop and a lot of rock. The count is 1&2&3&4. Tool is all over the map
@primateinterfacetechnologi62207 ай бұрын
It's crazy how they manage to make "four" sound like it isn't... As this piece is one of their few basically in 4/4, except for a couple of long breaks that are in "three". But yeah: they utilize all time signatures, and every other rhythmic trick in the book, and some that aren't in the book. Peace and love.
@6ic6ic6ic7 ай бұрын
@@primateinterfacetechnologi6220They really do a great job with this song in making you feel it's not in 4/4. Part of that is the few bars of 3/4 and the rest is their dancing around the 4. Meshuggah is a bit like that. They almost always have a 4/4 on the high hat and the rest is doing an extra beat here a polyrhythm there, a half measure etc.

Tool use polyrhythms in such a specific and smart way. You get this almost uncomfortable feeling as it begins to feel things are falling apart, yet there is enough of a groove to keep you engaged, and then the various time signature reunite in a glorious drop that lands harder than any you’ve ever heard, because of the friction building in that uncountable comfort. in many aspects of their guitar is very simple, but done in such a unique artistic way, it’s like another voice in the track. It’s just great music.

BP, I'd love to see you react to Tool's songs "Wings For Marie" and "10,000 Days (Wings part 2)." They should be done together (Like Ren's Jenny and Screech). Maynard wrote these songs about the death of his mother after a long battle, and I think they would really resonate with you. If you do them, please find lyric videos or have the lyrics pulled up. Maynard's mother was paralyzed for many years. She always maintained strong faith throughout her life, even though her congregation was very cruel to her and implied that it was punishment for something she did wrong. Maynard was very angry about it as a younger man, but this is a more mature Maynard. It's a beautiful piece, and I think you would really love it.

Their album art is done by the artist Alex Grey, who is definitely a wizard of translating psychedelic experiences into visual art. Tool concepts are a blend of psychology and spirituality. Check out their song Lateralus They incorporate the Fibonacci sequence (a mathematical formula in which each number is the sum of the two preceding ones 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21, into infinity found in all nature.. pine cone, sea shells, flowers, broccoli, etc.) into the syllables of lyrics and time signatures of the song. The concept expands on our own nature of growth thru life and being willing to transcend and evolve. It relates to the nature of the Fibonacci sequence. This song is a mind bending way of educating us thru a masterpiece of art. Psychological Bars await 🔥🔥🔥

16:51 - Yeah, we've found that the first Tool song that tends to resonate the most with rappers is The Pot because of the approachable scheme and the sick doubles and triples in the word play. The Pot is also a play on the adage 'the pot calling the kettle black'. The lyric is pointing out hypocrisy. I read somewhere that Maynard was calling out a judge who was handing out harsh rulings for pot (ganja) use when he himself was known to indulge. Maynard is very much a believer of Jungian psychology. Jung identifies several archetypes of man/woman: the Self, our true nature; the Persona is the mask we present to others in order to conform to societal norms; the Shadow is the hidden or repressed aspects. The goal is to search our Shadow, and to bring all into balance. Then we can reach a higher level of functioning. The cover art is a good representation of the several masks that live within us. It's the complexity of the musical arrangements and the deep lyrics that have created the Tool Army. Good reaction.

You got the meaning correct. It’s about hypocrisy and the war on drugs. The lawmakers who put these laws in place to criminalize those that use drugs, but in turn do it themselves. It’s definitely “The Pot” and the “The Pot calling the kettle black.” The singer, Maynard, uses some very different ways of breaking up syllables and it feels more like hip hop in that respect. He uses his voice more as one of the instruments in the band and not as the frontman who is trying to stand out above the rest of the band. Everything from his inflection, to the notes he chooses for each word help paint the picture. Definitely venture down the Tool rabbit hole. You won’t be disappointed. Also, the genre is “Progressive Metal”.

Here we go again!! Welcome to one of the greatest bands of all time. Tool, made up of Vocalist Maynard James Keenan, Guitarist Adam Jones, Bassist Justin Chancellor, and the Octopus on Drums Mr. Danny Carry. In general Tool can be divided between their early years which had a more aggressive, angry tone and their later years which is more spiritual and reflective. Each member are elite musicians, Tool only sounds like Tool and are a genre all their own. Maynard writes all the lyrics, and his performances are on par with some of the greatest vocalists in history. He is also a vocalist for A Perfect Circle and Puscifer both of which I highly recommended to dive into. Tool fans will tell you to stay away from reacting to any of their official videos as they distract quite a bit from the songs and lyrics, I typically recommend to just listen to their music first and then on a second go around pull up the lyrics, we promise, it'll add dimension and depth to the entire experience. Tool fans are devoted and love to watch reactions of people’s first time listening, to say they are unique doesn’t do them justice. Take your time with reactions, we don’t mind if you pause and analyze, a lot of their music is open to interpretation which is fun for all of us. How can you say they are a genre all of their own when Dream theater have come before and then the godfathers of odd time signatures Rush where the originals. Get a grip

@@rimskykorsakov2892 I'm not just talking about odd time signatures that's been done in classical music for hundreds of years...if you remember back to when tool came out people tried to lump them in with the grunge wave...that didn't fit, people tried to label them heavy metal...nope again. Hard rock? Ha! And as they've progressed they are a blend of multiple styles thus creating a genre all by themselves. Just listen to the vast majority of KZbin reactors listening to Tool for the first time, they've never heard anything like them...they are unique and in a genre all their own.

That feeling you felt is the point. Man I went through a court battle back in 2010 that included the rights to my daughter and or 50yrs in prison. This was my fight song right here. This and Jambi. Both on this album. First month without her all I could do was grieve and cry. Day after day was one long day of nothing but gut wrenching crying. This song pissed me off and lit the fire within me to stand and do what needed to be done. And so I did....

Lol I was sitting there listening how Pegasus has a new appreciation for rock music, and listing off bands. Meanwhile I'm looking at the thumbnail for Audioslave's "Show me how to live" like "OH if you like them check that one out! " lol

TOOL's lyricism is 2nd to none. TOOL is 2nd to none for that matter. TOOL is their own genre. Spiral out, keep going.

So glad you're starting your TOOL journey. My favorite band. If possible I would recommend on the first listen of a song just listen and enjoy the music, TOOL has so much going on musically and lyrically that trying to do both during the first listen is difficult, and after the first listen delve into the lyrics. Also if possible use headphones there's so much depth.

Most of the time with TOOL, you don’t bang your head, you rock your body…

The album cover is done by a painter, Alex Grey, whose artwork is psychedelic or higher consciousness inspired.

As stated, you don't listen to Tool, you experience them. Keep going down the rabbit hole with them.

That’s often referred to as an “odd” time signature that you’re feeling. 4/4 is what we are used to and others can feel off. TOOL are masters at making you feel that way but still making listenable, good tracks that you can jam to.

Sober was in their begining. This was like 10/15 yrs later. Ya must do more by them and his other band Perfect Circle. True artist's.

Finding the head bob to tool songs is part of the fun. Danny is probably the best rock drummer alive today

And one thing about Tool their lyrics are usually three levels deeper than what you hear on the surface. Then sometimes not. They are pure genius
