There are a couple of reasons. First, it was a huge departure from the look and style of the band that played at Woodstock. In particular, moving to synth pop felt like the band sold out, trying to keep up with what the new generation was doing rather than having the self confidence to stay true to themselves. My own opinion is that bands evolve over time, or they become stale and irrelevant. Second, that radio DJ insert in the middle. -eyes rolling-. One list I saw of the worst songs of all time put this at number two and that ridiculous insert was the reason it went from being disappointing to being the second worst song (according to them). Personally, I see both sides. It is definitely catchy, and as a kid, I enjoyed it when it came out. As an adult, I understand the complaints and they are legitimate. And even if I don't change the channel right away, as soon as that radio DJ starts up, it's off. It's the sort of stunt I'd expect from middle school students trying to be a rock band, not from veterans of the musical revolution of the sixties and seventies.

One of those weird cases, where a band that had a successful career in the 70's, shortens their name from Jefferson Starship, to just Starship, reinvents their sounds with the synths of the new 80's, and does it all again into another successful career with an entirely different sound.

It sounds to me like they're seeing corporations take over the music industry and saying, 'you didn't build that!' WE built this city (starting with Elvis Presley, in a way). Yes, the young build, the artists make something new, the corporations see dollar signs and take over. Oh, and I'm so old I still think of this woman as Gracie Slick from 'White Rabbit' days.

Remember when you did a reaction on Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit with a very young Grace Slick looking scared? Long dark wavy hair with a long dress? Well this is her about 20 years later with 2 personnel and name changes of her band. The DJ referred to in this song was actually a famous DJ from the SF Bay Area. A DJ from the 50’s I think. The band went from Jefferson Airplane to Jefferson Starship and finally to Starship. Being born in the 1950’s myself, she was one of my idols as well as Janis Joplin.

They originally started out as Jefferson Airplane. Jefferson Airplane was an American rock band based in San Francisco, California, that became one of the pioneering bands of psychedelic rock formed in 1965. Jefferson Starship formed as an American rock band from San Francisco, California by a group of musicians including former members of Jefferson Airplane. In 1984 Starship, Initially a continuation of Jefferson Starship, it underwent a change in musical direction, the subsequent loss of personnel, and a lawsuit settlement that led to a name change. Starship's 1985 album, Knee Deep in the Hoopla, was certified platinum by the RIAA, and included two singles that went to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart: "We Built This City" and "Sara". I think you missed the point of the song. This is from Wikipedia. All I knew was that they "built" San Francisco's rock scene in the 60s but there is more to it. Song co-writers Martin Page and Bernie Taupin have stated that the song is about the decline of live-performance clubs in Los Angeles during the 1980s.[3] The lyrics are structured as a plea to corporate interests who are closing down rock music clubs ("We just want to dance here/ Someone stole the stage") because the corporations are concerned only with profits and respectability ("Too many runaways"), and have forgotten that rock music was what first attracted people to the city ("Don't you remember? We built this city on rock and roll!"). Though the song was originally written about Los Angeles, the Starship rendition references San Francisco (the hometown of both Starship and its predecessors, Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship) with a spoken-word interlude in which a radio disc jockey states, "I'm looking out over that Golden Gate Bridge". However, the disc jockey then says, "Here's your favorite radio station in your favorite radio city, the city by the bay, the city that rocks, the city that never sleeps", stressing the universality of the message: while "the city by the bay" is a nickname for San Francisco, the other two phrases are not, and "The City That Never Sleeps" is a well-known nickname for New York City. Capitalizing on the ambiguity, several radio stations added descriptions of their own local areas when they broadcast the song or added their own ident in its place.

Because orange groves and oil had nothing to do with the rise of LA...that and garnering water rights that no other city in the area could amass.

Jefferson Airplane or just Airplane to Jefferson Starship to Starship. The Airplane did build their city on rock and roll.

The section that mimics a radio announcer they left it so that local stations could match it to their city. Denver had one.

I remember when this came out, either late elementary school or jr high. The radio version included voiceovers about Portland (Oregon where I grew up nearby). I thought they were actually signing about Portland. Then later in HS, I was up near Seatle and it came on the radio where they were singing about Seatle. 🤔 Odd. Then I moved to Orlando and sure as 💩, a voiceover about Orlando. I think every radio station had that voice over about their city. I can't say that I've heard it here in Denver since I moved here 17 years ago. And got to see them in the 90s (don't remember if they were still going by Starship, but maybe they were back to Jefferson again) in a small club in Honolulu when I lived there. We were just going down to play pool and low and behold, they were performing.

Those who hate 80's music hate this song. Probably because the 80's weren't at the level of the 70's. But what decade was? There's actually a lot of great music from the 80's and that decade was just so damned much fun! I'm glad you liked it.
