Native german speaker here. I'd like to say a few things about the lyrics. German is a very difficult language, so some subtile meanings can get lost in translation easily: So the song is a play on the phrases "Du hast mich", coming from the word "etwas haben", which means to own or posses something but also to just have something (in your hand/pocket/etc) Like all words in German, "Haben" changes when conjugated. "Ich habe, du hast, er/sie hat", instead of "I have, you have, he/she has". "Haben" in this form is also used to signal past tense "Ich habe den Ball geworfen." means "I threw the ball" (at some unspecific point in the past). It's used in the past tense of the word "jmd fragen", that means to ask someone. "Du hast mich gefragt" means "You asked me." So the phrase "Du hast mich gefragt und ich hab nix gesagt" means "You asked me and I didn't say anything." The other word used is the word "etwas/jmd hassen", which translates to "to hate someone or something." Again conjugating, "Du hasst mich." means "You hate me." As you already translate correctly, the rest of the lyrics is the German equivalent to the "Till death do us part" wedding vows. "Willst du" translates to "Do you want to" but in older days "Willst du" was also used in place of an order, "You are going to do this!" So the chorus is the question: "Will you stay faithful to her till death parts you?" The high pitched (female) voice answers with "Ja." meaning "Yes." or in this context "I do." The deeper (male) voice answers "Nein." meaning "No." The wordplay in the beginning signals the shift in emotion. She loves you, wants to marry you, asks you to stay with her till death parts you.... and you don't answer, making her love for you turn to hatred and pain. "Du hasst mich." You hate me. I also want to mention the word "Treu." "Treu sein" translates to "being faithful", but it has more meanings that just to not cheat on someone. "Mir selbst treu sein." means "being true to myself". "Deinen Worten treu sein", to be true to your word, means to not lie, to keep a promise and also to not break from your beliefs and your stance. "Jemandem treu sein" means "to be loyal to someone", both in the way of being there for someone and in protecting the person. So there are a few more layers to this "betrayal" in the song. Rammstein actually has a kind of complicated stance in the german metal world. Sadly, there is a lot of strong popular right-winged bands in Germany, so that hard German Rock or metal music often gets automatically associated with promoting those kinds of political views. Rammstein was often painted in the media as a "Nazi-band", mainly because of the way Till pronounces the R sometimes, and they answered to that with a song called "Links, zwo, drei, vier" that you might want to check out in this context. The title translates to "Left, two, three, four", which was a way for soldiers to count their steps so the would march in sync, with "links", left, refering to the left leg. "Links" or "Links sein" (being left) is a very casual way to state that someone supports left-winged politics, not in the way of "communist", but in contrast to "being right". I would recommend you to maybe wait a bit with exploring Rammstein right now, though, as they are caught up in a massive scandal here in Germany relating to groupies, elicit activity backstage and drugging people. It has been pretty huge in the media. But if you want to explore some german lyrics, I'd always love to help.

Hands down the best live show on the planet. Til is a certified pyrotechnician, and the rest of the band are trained as well. Every movement they do on stage is EXTREMELY precise, due to safety. Seeing this with your own eyes? Unreal. I waited 2 years, and drove 14 hours to see them...would gladly do so again. Til's father was a well known author, and he himself is a poet. There is a LOT of wordplay in their lyrics, which can sometimes get lost in translation. They are the reason that I studied German for a good while. They also delve into stories that would give most pause, real life stories. Give a look to 'Mein Teil', 'Weiner Blut', or 'Halloman'...they are all based on real life cases. Their lyrics can be totally camp, outlandish, dirty af, scary as hell, and heart breaking in depth...they are not a one tricky pony. My absolute favorite song of all time from them? 'Spieluhr'...it hits hard due to the past. It was one of the first songs to ever make me genuinely ugly cry. I still plan on getting a tat inspired by it, it's THAT relevant to me. If you ever get a chance, 10000% GO SEE THEM. It is worth every bit of time, effort, and money to do so.

I haven't heard many of their songs, but the few I have heard I really like. I feel like KH is semi correct in his evaluation of this as a love/marriage type of song though, based on what I know of Rammstein. It is a love/wedding/marriage type of song... but I think (or feel, perhaps) that the primary "bride" or "groom" (depending on who is singing it) is, in fact, Germany. Knox brings it up and talks about it some, but it seems to me like he still thinks of it as a song between a couple rather than a person and their country.

@@strangeling325 Oh I know. Deutschland is the other song I know by Rammstein, and you're right, the video is out of this world. Knox Hill is also great at breaking songs down, and as far as I know nothing he said was incorrect. I just... listening to this song, watching his reaction, and knowing how good Rammstein is at approaching nationalism in a non-negative manner, being able to express both the love for Germany and the hate/acceptance of the tarnished history of the nation harmoniously, such as they do... I see that strongly expressed in Du Hast as well. Is it a love letter between a man and a woman? Yes, of course. But that seems a little too simplistic for a band that has so much depth to them, if that makes sense. However, that's my opinion.

Fun Fact: The Keyboard player is always on a treadmill for every show and usually averages around 27 miles of walking per concert! Also all the liquid they're covered with is actually fire retardant because of the pyrotechnics. Also related: The Lead singer didn't like the pyro when they first started going live so he went and became a licensed pyrotechnician so that he could do all of these pyrotechnics himself.

As far as I know, they said in an interview that all songs are about love. And there are right, but there are many types of love. e.g. the love-hate relationship for a country with a so dark past like germany in „Deutschland“ Also Rammstein has the best Liveshow I know. So I would recommend more of Rammstein live. And yes, Flake is on an treadmill, because he likes to move and cant move freely on Stage without burning himself Greetings from Germany

Knox, you should definitely check out either, Ich Tu Dir Weh live or Mein Hertz Brennt piano version. Both are absolutely amazing performances by Rammstein. Till Lindemann ( front man) is a trained pyro technician. He got into using pyros on stage to help with stage fright. His father was a famous German poet in the 30s or 40s and is where he learned a lot about wordplay. Just a little back ground for you.

They have one of the best live shows you'll ever see. The guitar sound is amazing live. They have many pyrotechnic people because there's fire everywhere. The front the back the sides. They have flame throwers attached to their guitars. I saw 18 wheelers on the side of a stadium one time unloading all they have to carry. Ticket price is worth it. This song is iconic! One of the first metal songs I ever heard as a kid “These dudes just have blood and gore all over their arms?” If I’m remembering correctly that’s a thermal gel to protect them from getting burned by the insane pyro they have in their show. But it does look like blood and honestly fits their vibe I NEED to see Rammstein live someday. As a pyromaniac the visuals of their show are something I need to experience in person It could be a metaphor for patriotism cuz they do have songs about Germany and their politics (Deutschland/Links 234) but the explicit meaning is about infidelity. As you saw the bulk of the chorus is wedding vows but notice how the response to the questions is “nein” (no). I highly recommend checking out the music video because it reinforces this by showing a story that depicts the the drummer with a woman, he then goes into this barn and finds the band there and they proceed to beat and immolate someone (presumably the woman’s lover) before showing them walking out much to her surprise and then a shot of the drummer checking his watch right before the car explodes killing the woman

I saw them live in 1999 in Mexico City, back then they didn't have the electric effects on the keyboard, and instead of launching the flairs from a gun they used a bow, which was cool because the arch of the bow had its own fireworks and they started rotating it to make it look like they were making shapes with light. The flairs coming back the the stage and then explosions and fire, and the entire band kept performing like "yeah, this is normal for me, just my day job"...

Please, please react to both versions of Mein Herz Brennt. The official piano version and then the official video. You will see so many sides to this singer and band in those two videos. You could do them both in one reaction maybe? I know that you might not want to do the same set of lyrics twice but the piano one gives you a really good insight into the character the singer is portraying and the 'normal' video then would give you a lot to discuss about what the story means.

Hell yeah! Metal Mondays with Knox are the best. This is the song that put them on the map stateside. Now that you’ve got an idea of what their live show is about, you HAVE to peep their live version of ‘Engel’ at Madison Square Garden. The lyrics of that song are beautifully poetic and I think you’ll really appreciate them for what they are. Not to mention the performance itself is awe inspiring. Other Rammstein recommendations: Mein Herz Brennt (piano version) Zeit Sonne Ich Tu Dir Weh (Live, Madison Square Garden) The album this song is on, Sehnsucht was a barn burner when it came out and deeply effected so many people my age. I have the absolute best memory of the first time I heard Du Hast: I was 10 years old, playing NFL Blitz on the 64 in my friends basement when he randomly put on a cd that one of his cousin’s lent him…our little rural Nebraska minds were blown and we rocked out for a solid day and a half. Nothing but NFL Blitz, Goldeneye, Turok, Surge, Doritos, and Rammstein on repeat. It was as close to heaven as a kid could get in 1998 lol. Been a die hard fan ever since. Cheers!

Important to know: the first sentence is cvery deliberately structured "Du (You)" "Du has(s)t - either meaning "you have" if writen with one s or "you hate" if written with two s "Du has(s)t mich" again, either "You have me" which would be an incomplete sentence waiting for a resolution or "You hate me" The way the song continues "Du hast mich gefragt" (You have asked of me" makes it clear in the end which one is meant, but it is deliberatly kept vague in the beginning

They used the pyrotechnics to cover the singer in the early days because he was shy, so he hid behind flames, and then he became not shy, but the pyrotechnics were just iconic at that point, so they stayed

Yeah from what I remember, Flake uses a treadmill because he doesn’t wanna get bored during the concerts. Also, Till is a certified pyrotechnician. Which results in that small display there. If you want a true demonstration, check out Ich ti de wir

Of course he's calm, he prepared all the fireworks! he's a pyrotechnician. They are awesome! watching French people acting this way is surprising, isn't it? I suggest watching Rammstein's Deutschland, the MV is very interesting!

There is a lot more wordplay in it. He swithed between singing: Willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet, treu ihr sein für alle Tage - Do you want until death does part you, be faithfull to her, for every day Willst du bis zum Tod der Scheide, sie lieben auch in schlechten tagen - Do you want until the death of the (for lack of a better translation) vagina, love her on bad days also

He sings 'bis der tot ihr scheided' (till death do us part' and changes it to 'bis zum tot der scheide' in the last verse, which means something like 'till death of the sheath', so when there is no more 'action' in the bedroom, will you still be faithfull? Awnsered by a loud 'nein!' so, no 😅😋

Being in the mosh pit in a Rammtsien concert you will never forget. There were a couple of CGI things in this video. The lightning on the keyboard (obviously) and the explosion from the fireworks coming back (that was all smoke IRL you can see in the video). However, the fire is real. You could feel the heat. Man to be young again. :)

There's nothing like watching Rammstein live. The pyrotechnics aren't a one-time thing, they have something planned for each part of their set. One of the moments I remember the most when I saw them live was when they got out a massive penis-shaped foam cannon and shot it into the crowd for their song "Pussy".

Hey knox, I was born and raised in Germany and grew up on Rammstein. There’s not a soul in Europe that doesn’t know this song. And metalheads in the US know this song too. He is referring to staying loyal to god. He’s asking God but he doesn’t say anything back. Until our death, we part , we should stay loyal regardless, if we hear from god or not. You are a very intelligent guy and were extremely close to their metaphor. I love watching your channel because you don’t miss a thing.. thank you for all your hard work

Considering the lead singer and the author of these and most other lyrics has stated that he is an atheist, that's just you projecting your personal feelings on these lyrics without any basis in reality.

Well, the whole time the female voice is answering "Ja/yes" whilst Till is resolutely saying "Nein/no" to the wedding vow. And there is the connection to the play on words "Du hast vs Du hasst"/"you have vs you hate"
@d.l.3807
@d.l.3807 Жыл бұрын
To get into the lyrics back again: Nicely researched with the homophony. First they sing "Du. Du hasst. Du hasst mich." -> "You. You hate. You hate me." When it goes further: "Du hast mich gefragt. Du hast mich gefragt. Du hast mich gefragt und ich hab nichts gesagt." -> "You have asked me. You have asked me. You have asked me and I didn't answer." So, "hasst" (hate) becomes the present perfect "hast gefragt" (have asked). I just realized that many websites for lyrics get the following part differently: I always hear "Willst du bis zum Tod der Scheide sie lieben auch in schlechten Tagen?" -> "Do you want until the vaginas death love her even on bad days?" Some are writing this. Others write something like "Willst du bis zum Tod, der scheidet, sie lieben auch in schlechten Tagen?" -> "Do you want until death, that separates, love her even on bad days?" So, I am not absolutely sure what he is singing on that line. I would not be shocked if it was the first one since we are talking about Rammstein. ^^

Du hast mich - you have me, du haast mich - you hate me. A Rammstein concert is very spectacular. Especially when you see them up close. (let's say this is at least 20 meters due to the pyrotechnic devices)

I love that one of my fav reactors has found Rammstein who are my absolute number 1 band! Given your talent for lyrical interpretation, I'd love to see your thoughts on tracks such as Zeit, Adieu, Deutschland (the official videos are masterpieces), Mein Herz Brennt (I'd recommend the piano version), Mein Teil (live). To answer a couple of things you remarked on - Flake (the keyboard player) is on a treadmill because it powers the tesla coils that produces the electricity effects and because he gets bored standing still for a couple of hours. It's not 'blood and gore' all over them, its fire retardant gel :) and the band are all certified pyrotechnicians which is how they are allowed to do all the effects. Enjoy the journey!

I think the best example of their showman ship is „Engel“ (Angel) live in Madison Square Garden. About Du Hast I think it’s the most compact story: a egocentric woman (Du) who is also hateful (Du hasst) and even hates her boyfriend (Du hasst mich) has the audacity to ask him the big question (Du hast mich gefragt) … all the rest but these 4 words are thus details to color the story more (and just in case you are wondering - but you should not, she wants a Yes but gets a harsh and unmisunderstandable NO)

He sings: Du hast (You have) German for hate is: Du hass (You hate). This play with meaning and words is something that can be found in many of their songs. And why he is bloody and gory, and why he is on a treadmill is from an earlier stage in the show...

DUDE, if you go down the Rammstein rabbit hole.... there is soooo much to talk about! You mention love and hate, loyalty etc.. you need to watch their Deutschland video! It is EXACTLY about that! Germany has a complicated history and Rammstein is from former east Germany as well so that song is about the fact you like to love your country but with Germany's history it's hard... I'm telling you these guys are deep! Their videos are like friggin movies! Adieu is a movie, Deutschland is like a movie.. they are so brilliant!

You just witnessed why Rock and Heavy Metal will always be better than Rap any day. There is one that is similar to the call and response from the crowd and that is Queen at the Live Aid fund rasier concert in 1985. That was on 2 continents. London and Philadelphia. As Freddie was doing the call and response in London, it was also broadcast via satellite (which was new at the time) in Philadelphia and that crowd was responding as well. An approximate total of 200,000 people. That whole concert was 12 hours and broadcast all over the world to 1 billion people.
