I listened to the Big 4 growing up, and although Slayer was heavier, Metallica was more popular, Megadeth was more technical, Anthrax was the party band. They were about getting out there and being silly and having a good time. This year I'm turning 50, and I'm still Caught In A Mosh.

Anthrax, the fun band. The metal band with a sense of humour. This almost stood them alone in sea of doom. It didn't stop them from making serious points on serious topics, but it did make them stand out from the crowd. Genius music. The Frank Zappa of thrash metal...🤘

All scatter-brained, caught in a mosh. Hence the part where the lyrics read "Think before you speak or suffer for your words. Learn to give respect that others give to you". Anthrax was always an advocate for fairness and good. You can hear it in their lyrics.

"THE BIG 4" always will refer to Thrash metal exclusively, not METAL in general. That's why you don't include Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, etc.

At a punk show, if someone falls down in the mosh pit the pit will stop and people will help you up, a metal mosh pit can be different, an underground one still has the punk code but mainstream ones have got away from the original moshing and have been taken over by the frat boys type and have led to injuries at concerts

It shows you different dance moves and the name of the dance. Its an amazing video by one of the most iconic hardcore bands. Sick of it all!! Step down. Thrash is a very interesting genre (my favorite genre), there's a lot of different varieties of Thrash. There's bands like Anthrax that lean more Punk (it's called Crossover Thrash), then you got bands like Sepultura and Demolition Hammer that have some Death Metal elements (called Death Thrash)..... ....Then you got some bands like the modern bands Schizophrenia and Sarcator that have Black Metal elements (Black/Thrash or Blackened Thrash), then you got straight up Thrash bands like TestAmenT and Overkill that give you that raw, in-yo-face Thrash that makes you headbang. Forgot to add Progressive Thrash (my favorite subgenre), I highly recommend the modern Progressive Thrash bands Arcania, Meshiaak + former band 4arm, Bloodmores, Vektor, and Sarcator. Thanks @ Figu6ka for the reminder 🤝🤛🤜 In this modern wave of Thrash bands, there's a lot of genre blending and many modern thrash bands are way heavier than OG Thrash bands. Thrash is an amazing genre, I think it's the truest form of metal! 🤘🤘🤘🤘

If you like Gojira, I highly recommend checking out an amazing French Progressive Thrash band called Arcania that I describe as "If Gojira made Thrash Metal". Arcania has 2 albums called "Dreams Are Dead" (I made the album cover as my profile pic) and their first album is "Sweet Angel Dust", both albums are bangers from start to finish!

Think the song is about Joey's abusive dad. 'Caught In A Mosh' used as a metaphor. 'Talking To You Is Like Clapping With One Hand' is a great lyric too. I'd say do 'Madhouse' next.

Among the Living is the definition of thrash metal to me. If you don't mosh to this, you ain't got a pulse \m/ Anthrax is an awesome live band, there's not many who can compete with them in terms of energy and moshability :) The metal community is great. Everyone is so friendly. It's just like you said, if you go down, hands come up immediately and help you up, if you drop your stuff, people pick it up and give it to you, festival are full of drunk people but there's zero trouble... In my country (Finland) the crime rates of festivals are released and metal festivals have like 2 incidents per 2-3 days and tango festival has like 500 :D

Volbeat`s guitarist use to play for Anthrax. I think Scott Ian (the guy rapping on "bring the noise" beside Chuck D) is the most likeable person in the big 4, but Anthrax is number 4.

Most of the solos during these early albums performed by Dan Spitz were written by the drummer Charlie Benante who is the uncle of bassist Frank Bello. Rhythm guitarist Scott Ian has an easily identifiable chug to many of his riffs. Joey Belladonna on vocals has always had an amazing range . The 90’s early 2000’s they had changed vocalists to John Bush of Armored Saint which is another great thrash band. His albums sounded a bit grittier And from the second Bush era album on Dan Spitz was gone and they had Dimebag perform solos on some songs. But during the Bush era their popularity waned because many loved Joey on vocals but there are a number of Gems in the Bush Era too like Only, Room for One More, Black Lodge, Fueled, Riding Shotgun

I always considered the big four as more or less equal in terms of quality. In terms of popularity and influence, Metallica was first, and I considered Anthrax next, followed by Slayer and then Megadeth. I always thought of Slayer as a lot more “underground” than the other three, a lot more extreme. All four were excellent in their own way. Slayer was more deliberately low-key, I thought. I liked Anthrax’s sense of fun, and they wrote what I thought were anthems, so I thought of them as number two. I never liked Megadeth as much as the others. Dave always annoyed me. But he did manage to come back from being fired from the biggest band in thrash to run one or the Big Four, so he deserved everything he got for accomplishing that. After the Big Four I considered the next Big Four to be Flotsam & Jetsam (whose Jason Newsted went on to Metallica), Exodus (whose Kirk Hammett joined Metallica), Nuclear Assault, and Testament. Flotsam was my favorite of these. Their first album I consider the best thrash album by a band not in the Big Four.

Scott Ian was in S.O.D before Anthrax and that was one of the first Crossover Thrash bands blending hardcore punk with Thrash. No surprise you hear the punk influence in Anthrax, especially early stuff.

This is the first album I ever bought! The second i heard Anthrax i loved them and I was quite young. I love this band so much,but i don't know anyone else that does so i missed out on the 40th anniversary tour, and when I saw it on KZbin i couldn't believe how much of this album they played. I would have peed myself when they came out to Among The Living!

Yes Anthrax are still together though it's been a minute since their last studio album, 2016's For All Kings. One reason why this sounds like punk is because they are from NYC, arguably the birthplace of punk and hardcore. Also gotta get to Madhouse, I'm the Man, and one of my favorites, Safe Home

Anthrax combined skater punk and metal and you've got a different kind of thrash than Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth.... thats what made these bands the big four, each one had a different style of thrash to bring to the industry of metal. F yes y'all keep the Anthrax coming. Anything from State of Euphoria or Among the Living especially. This album and Euphoria are both A+++. Like some other commenters have said about the Big 4, they each have their own unique ways but Anthrax I always felt was the bouncier, more energetic and feel-good among them, like you can party to it. They are very heavily drum driven too.

As a Metal-er since i first heard Heavy Metal back in the mid-80's when I was in Junior High (the first two Metal songs I ever heard were Haunting The Chapel by Slayer and Ride The Lightning by Metallica), I can honestly say that most of we-us Metal-ers ranked the 'Big 4' as follows: 1 - Slayer; 2 - Metallica; 3 - Anthrax; 4 - Megadeth. And right below the 'Big 4' were Overkill and Testament and Exodus and Iron Maiden and Flotsam and Jetsam.
