She sheds a tear in the last verse, where she sings "I'm willing to give it another try" I was quite fond of her. Cut her hair off because of the record label talked about how much sales there are in such a pretty girl... She didn't want to sell records because of her looks... The fact that she always stood up for what she believed in, that's admirable

There's a video of her singing this live in a concert, its hard to believe, but the vocals are even more emotional than the studio version. Sinead was an incredibly honest and upstanding woman. She stood up and told the truth on SNL about the cover-ups in the Catholic church ordered by the Pope, and as a result she received so much hate from the media and the public, being fuelled by the media, that it destroyed her career at its height, and affected her mental health. Decades later when the horrific truth came out about the institutionalised paedophilia in the Catholic church, she was proved 100% correct.

You do know that Prince wrote this song for her, don't you? He even performed it live on his tours. "Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song written and composed by Prince for his side project the Family; the song appeared on their debut studio album, The Family (1985). The song features lyrics exploring feelings of longing from the point of view of an abandoned lover. Prince released his own rendition of "Nothing Compares 2 U", with Rosie Gaines on guest vocals in 1993. This live version of the song was included on his compilation album The Hits/The B-Sides. His original 1984 studio recording of the song was eventually released in 2018 as a single and later on the 2019 posthumous compilation Originals.

Small correction - he didn’t write it for her, but he made a lot of music and let songs he wasn’t making work for him, get used by other people - The Bangles with Manic Monday etc. Sinéad got the rights to record this but Prince knew practically nothing about it. Apparently they had some small interactions before she recorded it and made it a hit, but not much. After it was a hit, according the Sinéad, he invited her over late at night to his place and …you should read the account, but he acted very weird and abusive and the general impression is that he resented her success with the song - although years later, he did thank her for it…for all the houses it bought him.

@sputukgmail

@@DefinitelyNotBender the story about him attacking her, chasing her around the woods etc, came from her in her autobiography. And no, he wrote and initially recorded Nothing Compares to U in 1985, 5 years before Sinéad got the song as Prince had released it for other artists to ‘buy’. It was written and initially recorded by him on 1985, before she even had a record contract, and they only ever talked about it shortly before she recorded her version of it. He talked and wrote about the song - it was written about a girlfriend leaving - and the “mamma” was a term of endearment from a man to a girl he still loved. Even Sinéad hadn’t connected it to her mother until that moment filming the video according to a behind the scenes interview about why she was so moved by it. Remember her mother had been physically abusive and she wasn’t close, but had started to appreciate the power of forgiveness - and had had a dream in which her mother had said of Sinéad’s sister not forgiving her “I do not want what I have not got” - which became the title of the album.

@@DefinitelyNotBender he wrote the song for one of his side projects "The Family" who recorded it in 1985 on their album which I bought when it came out. Had nothing to do with Sinead's mom. 9:15 - 9:22 - a tear runs down her left cheek (our right side). It is a single tear. She is welling up during that entire verse, though. She may not have written this song, but she absolutely owns it. Same can be said with Jimi Hendrix's covering Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower and Disturbed's cover of "Sound of Silence". Even Manfred Mann's "Blinded by the Light" is a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song.

Sinead was a real one. Her version of the foggy dew (with the chieftains) is my favorite take on the song.

She starts crying when she says “all the flowers that you want planted, mama…” On her episode of behind the music she said that while the song is written about a break up, for her, it’s about her mother who put her through horrific abuse. Probably why her version is more intense than anyone else’s.

I remember being a little kid watching her on SNL when she tore up the picture of the Pope, and how she was hated and shunned after that. And now we know she was right all along. RIP

Beautiful song. Please consider reacting to some of her other songs. It’s a shame that people don’t know more of her catalogue. I’d be interested to hear what you guys think of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” or “Black Boys on Mopeds.”

The part that you couldn't understand is "I put my arms around every boy I see. But they only remind me of you." React to her songs Jackie, Jerusalem, Troy, Emperor's New Clothes, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, Black Boys On Mopeds, Three Babies, The Last Day Of Our Acquaintance and I Am Stretched Out On Your Grave please. RIP Sinead O'Conner. Thank you for your music, activism and outspokenness. ❤
