I'm sorry you just learned about her...... 2 years ago. She was phenomenal... and I am so heartbroken over her death. Her 1990 album saved my life. It was all I had trying to survive a dangerous abusive relationship. Sinead O'Connor has every experience in her album. In this song she is talking about her mother being dead but it can also relate to any kind of break up. This song is a tribute to her mother though. My mother also died when I was only 6 so this song blew my mind.

This is the original version, recorded even before Prince (the writer) did a live performance. Sinead's version is the best version BY FAR!!! I can't listen to any other version. This version spent 4 weeks at #1 in the USA in 1990, in a time when it was rare for a song to spend that long at #1. It was a smash!

This is a song that was written by Prince in the mid 80s. You can hear, even in Sinead's version, his signature style all over it. It was originally released by his side project "The Family", but, it obviously didn't make a hit. So he found an Irish singer, that could be a real vessel for the song. A woman, who's shaved head, was a protest against a church that was pure abuse, and the physical abuse she suffered from a husband she could never love. Even though the music and lyrics are by Prince, he realized that she was the only angel that could deliver it.
