I agree that it's about the music industry. The angels with their wings glued on are people pretending to be special and divine when really they're not. "We get scared when you don't stare" is admitting that the performer wants attention. Nobody wants that real sweetness of the honey, they just want the shit that makes money, so fake it up and get paid. Let me out = let me be myself, not this special (angelic, cherubic) mask. But still pay attention to my songs.

DING DING DING! Smokey nailed it. It’s all about selling out in the music industry, and Billy waning out. Like most Pumpkins song lyrics, it’s 80% on-the-nose storytelling, and 20% esoteric Billy nonsense. But, oh man, what an epic song.

🦋 ''Cherub Rock'' & ''Bullet With Butterfly Wings'' Are My Top Favorites. The lyrics relate to Corgan's relationship with his perception of the indie rock community and larger media. The song was performed in standard tuning with an E octave played at the 7th fret, a technique which the band used on other songs, such as "Drown", "Tristessa", and "Starla". Corgan describes this as the "Pumpkin Chord", saying "We basically stole that from Jimi Hendrix. The song was featured on numerous rhythm video games such as Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Rock Band, Power Gig: Rise of the Six String, and Rock smith 2014. It's True Because I Own All These Games. Great Reaction Guys!

As a non native english-speaking listener , the first Album was somekind of cryptic to me , but the feelings the SP triggered in me were so unique these days and led my Musical understanding in complete different ways.Seen them twice , one time at "Rock am Ring " Festival when Gish Was the actual Album and second in a Circus tent in Hannover at their Infinite Sadness-Tour and both were 2 of the finest live concerts I have seen in my whole life , impressive af....we made a big sport out of listening the unearthly great Mellon Collie and the Infinte Sadness high on acid , what is absolutely amazing...not that I'd recommend...just to say...and I've been absolutely in love with D'Arcy....

I'll tell you exactly where you know it from: Guitar Hero 3 or Rock Band, it was featured in both. The cherub (from Hebrew, plural: cherubim) is a supernatural being mentioned in the bible, some sort of angel who guards heaven. This might help to get a better understanding for what the song is about. And Smokey's right about Billy Corgan's wrestling connection. He was TNA's president between 2015 and 2016 and he purchased the NWA in 2017. Recently they worked together with AEW, Thunder Rosa and Serena Deeb both held the NWA World Women's Championship while wrestling on AEW shows and I also remember that there was a promo (video) segment of Billy Corgan on a Dynamite show at some point.

In “Cherub Rock,” Corgan finds himself suddenly associated with a counter-culture that he never identified with or was included in. He accurately paints a picture of the volatile music industry at his time with his signature sarcasm intact. Many musicians and artists are in it for the money and willfully jeopardize the integrity of their art. Corgan suggests fighting back against this notion in the name of fearless nonconformity. In a 1995 interview, Corgan explained that every song on this album is about a personal relationship. “Cherub Rock,” Billy said, “is about my relationship to the indie-world and the media.”

Smokey, your part right about Adonis. The flamboyant version of him with the blonde hair and the pastel colors was late 80s. Adonis DID wrestle in the 70s and even teamed with Jesse Ventura in the early 80s. His look was more of a leather biker look. He changed his look when he started putting on weight. Another interesting fact is that Billy Corgan is indeed a wrestling fan and for awhile had a role in NWA, maybe as like a booker. A cherub would be like a child-like winged angel, think something similar to cupid. So the title could be how the style of music appeals to youth, teens and young adults.

What makes this song work is Jimmy Chamberlans commitmemt to a half time groove with the snare hit only on the 3 count -- instead of the 2 & 4. This gives the guitar and lyrics room to breathe and creates a push pull feel where the drums seem like they're restraining the guitar from being too frenetic.

The Pumpkins were a really decent band back then. Particularly their early to mid 90's era of "Gish", "Siamese Dream" and "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness". I found they lost their way a little after that, but that's just my personal opinion. I'm sure there are lots of Pumpkins fans who would disagree. I remember seeing them at a small club here in England called Edwards No 8 in Birmingham back in very early 1992 when they were still touring for "Gish". Yes, I am that old haha :D Check out the likes of "I Am One", "Siva", "Bury Me", "Tristessa", Rhinoceros", "Hummer", "Rocket" ,"Soma", "Where Boys Fear To Tread", "Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans", "Tales Of A Scorched Earth" and "Zero" to name just a handful of classic era Pumpkins.
