I'm so happy Forty Six & 2 beat out 7empest, and here's why: You guys are brand new to Tool. Take in all their older stuff first (I know you did Invincible and loved it) that will be the best way to get to know them. 7empest is a 15 minute long insanity that weaves through their entire discography. Having a grasp of their older stuff will give you a much deeper appreciation of their new album, I believe. I've been a fan since 2001 and it took me a good 10 listens of Fear Inoculum to really appreciate and begin to understand it. You guys being musicians will get it quicker than me, but listening to their older albums first will provide a deeper appreciation. At least that's my opinion.

This is my favorite thing about Tool. I had listened to tempest 100 tones before I stumble across your comment and I had never looked at the song ad being the sum of bits and pieces from the rest of the entire catalogue and now tempest feels like a completely different song and it's like hearing it for the first time again. I've had a similar experience with every song and album. I have friends that will winter how I can listen to nothing but tool and I always tell them that as soon as it gets old or i feel like one extracted everything I could, I will love on. But ive been at it since 1996 and I'm still picking up stuff I missed on the first thousand listens. So hats off to you. Well said. Cheers.

this song refers to one of carl jung's concepts, the shadow. jung reckoned that when we're being brought up and we're taught which of our behaviours are socially acceptable and which aren't we suppress one side and nurture the other and they become our shadow and our persona. the shadow's still always there and it still runs our behaviour as much as the above ground part. jung thought that through dreaming and bringing dreams into reality with art and rituals we can take control of our selves and be what we were meant to be

@michelleheadrick951 Жыл бұрын

@Fjdjwbsjdbfnr4 жыл бұрын
The shadow refers to jungian philosophy. Carl jung believed that you need to embrace the shadow ( the darkest part of yourself) to fully grow as a person. And if you ignore it, or fight it, it will consume you from within. If you can embrace it, and pull it into the light of consciousnesses, one can live in harmony (balance). At least that's my take on it. Also 46+2 is the number of chromosomes needed for unity consciousnesses. All in all, this song is about growing into the next stage of existence.
@plexus4 жыл бұрын
This song is about introspection. This song is about digging through old memories, the negative side of your psyche that you bury and repress and ultimately harms your life in ways you don’t consciously perceive. The “shadow” is a term from Jungian psychology. It is one of the many Jungian archetypes. It is the opposite of the ego. It is all the negative aspects and self-deprecating parts of your self-perception. It can really be seen in any way that you personally interpret of discovering those buried parts of yourself that consist of your shadow... so your interpretation of these negative aspects coming up through a withdrawal experience is valid. However, I always saw this song as explaining the experience of coming through a very intense and negative bad trip on a very heavy dose of psychedelics... 6 hits of strong acid or 6 grams of strong mushrooms... one might think they’ll have an intensely beautiful experience, when suddenly the paranoia and fear hits once... and as soon as it does, it snowballs into a personal first-class trip straight to death and hell. A terrifying and dark bad trio into ego-death territory will send you STRAIGHT into your “shadow” and the only option at that point is to maintain and come out the other side, hopefully learning some profound truths about yourself. And in my experience, it’s actually these challenging, hard, negative trips, marinated in fear are the ones you actually learn the most about yourself from, and grown the most from. That’s how I view the lyrics of this song. (I see it sort of serving as a companion piece to Third Eye, the final, epic track from this album, which is blatantly about psychedelics.... where that song is about having a more positive intense psychedelic experience, this song is about the other fork in the road that you can go down after ingesting some of that sacrament.) Though like I said, it’s open to interpretation... all tool songs are very much open to interpretation... they have a basic meaning which is on the surface, but they leave it up to the listener to let themselves attach their own personal experience and meaning into that framework to really be a more personal experience to that listener... so if someone has experienced what Maynard is singing about in this song by going through a withdrawal episode (and I can personally vouch that that is surely a possibility) then that is a completely valid interpretation of this song. Also, many people will say that this song is ABOUT the evolution of man from having “44+2” chromosomes to having “46+2” chromosomes... what some people call “Christ consciousness”... our supposed next step in human evolution... but the song is not ABOUT that... it merely uses that theory to say “46+2 is just ahead of me” meaning that by going through this experience of sifting through his shadow-self, a personal evolution is ahead of him... that his consciousness is on a path to expansion, and this shadow-experience is a step on that journey.

Eric Stodolnik Another angle.... Psalms 46:2. Aenema is about California dropping into the ocean. Just a simple thought.
@plexus4 жыл бұрын
mpd370... I actually really love that that verse happens to be describing some sort of cataclysm... but it’s only a coincidence... the 46+2 chromosome thing aka “Christ consciousness” in new age terminology has been well established as the meaning (or more specifically the inspiration) of the song title for a long long time... since the 90s... interesting verse though. (Also, I would say the video definitely aligns with the idea that it’s based on a psychedelic spiritual experience... particularly the last bit with the leaf and the Alex Grey collaboration bit)

The song in general is all about self-improvement and reflecting on yourself to evolve and be a better person. You can view it through the lens of overcoming addiction if that's how it hits you. The great thing with alot of Tool songs is that the specifics of song meanings can always come down to the person listening. The songs are what you want them to be to work for you.

Love your stuff guys, my recommendations would be "Sweat" off their first album Opiate....or "Swamp Song" from their second, Undertow

I'm with you on the Opiate EP and freaking Swamp Song all day. They really need to do both. I swear they won't want to stop once they get into those.

Tool tuesday earned an extra sub. I love this band and one of my favorite things is seeing people experience them for the first time. I wish I could forget everything they have done and hear it all for the first time again.

Interesting you made the Pink Floyd comparison. When I saw them initially in 2001,my first reaction to their concert performance was “damn,they reminded me of Pink Floyd”,which I saw perform as well many years before . Their shows are something otherworldly . That’s all I can say.

a human being comprises of 44 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes, based on evolution theory the next best evolved humans will have 46 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes.. Thus the song 46 & 2 suggests that most of the influence for evolving is through change and they have taken the effect of shadow as a tool to attain. Hope now the song lyrics make more sense.

Fun Fact: Tool also pretty much puts on a modern-day Pink Floyd style light show man. Go see it if you get a chance. They won't disappoint.

A lot of this album was based on California pop new age stuff at the time, mostly condensed in the book "Nothing in This Book is True, But Its Exactly How Things Are" by Bob Frissell. 46+2, Merkabah, Third Eye stuff, almost all the 'new age' ideas on Aenema and the Salival live album that came out of that tour seem to be right out of the book. Maynard spins and gives his own interpretation on it, but its pretty clear he was reading the book or thinking about it when he wrote out some of these ideas.

The shadow part is referring to the psychologist Carl Jung who said that everyone had a dark side or “shadow” and that you had to integrate your shadow into your persona in order to effect great personal change

Initial reaction to your opening comments, this is off Ænima not ten thousand years... and when you commented about the guitar at the beginning that was Justin’s bass line. The best interpretation and most widely accepted one is that the song is about evolution. The “shadow” imagery is a reference to a previous state of evolution. And yes, Danny Carrey is a badass but take a little more notice to how Justin Chancellor binds it all together with his bass riffs...
