Tom Cotter, this is amazing. What an important piece of both racing and automotive history. I’m jealous. What a beauty. Looks like an upgrade to an alternator from a generator.

Tom, you guys have done it again! What an awesome episode! Dan Gurney was one of my racing heroes (along with Carroll Shelby) when I was a young car nut. I never knew (or remembered) about this car and its history. Thanks so much for bringing it to light. BFH just keeps getting better and better!

This was very enjoyable. When Dan's Trans Am racing team was mentioned , it made me think again that it would be really cool if someone would do an in depth documentary about that era of Trans Am , AAR , Penske, Bud Moore etc. Considering how cool that series was , it seems like it has had very little coverage compared to other racing.

The good ol' days when racers from every discipline could bounce around as they saw fit, rather than being constrained by the walled gardens around every series. The days when most of them had the technical expertise to prepare a car, and the enthusiasm to do it just for a laugh. "Jaguar hunting". Heh. Dan Gurney really was as much an enthusiast as a racing driver. Ours is a better world for having had him and his kind in it at all.

What an amazing story, back in the day they just made things fast and safety was an afterthought. A time when men were men and women were dolls. A time when drinking at lunch was a requirement, and kids were allowed to smoke cigarettes at 8 years old. What a time to be alive
@danontherun56854 сағат бұрын
One of my high school pals had a stock bubble top 409 4 speed posi, white with red interior. When Mel launched the guys in the back bounced the seat to puff tire smoke into the car, indeed a super machine. I miss tire smoke clouding out entire intersections.

The story told to me was that my father raced with Dan Gurney in the early to mid fifties at Sportsman Park near Cleveland Ohio. I could have been rich if my mother married the right driver.:). Also, apparently when I was at the track as a 5 year old I didn’t cheer for my father because there was a car with Bugs Bunny on the door that I liked better.

Back when I was a little kid my oldest sister ( 23 yrs ) had a 1961 bubble top Bel Aire. I thought it was a neat car back when I was five but what I do remember about it was the sun baked the top of the rear seat and the vinyl on the top would fail exposing the cotton batting underneath rather quickly if left in a hot sun from the greenhouse effect the rear window had. One of my school mates dad had a 1961 Impala convertible that I thought was beautiful. It was white with red interior and had a nice rumble from the exhaust.
