Scary!!! People need to clean their chimneys probably every year if they use their fireplace a lot in the winter. Amazing that you caught that, I hope the house and the people were okay

Our neighbors had one due to soot blocking ventilation. Thankfully, it wasn't near as big as this.

Not so much of a problem if you burn Dry Seasoned wood, The older the better.
