These shocks aren‘t the correct ones for the GT . Boge grey are the normal ones , Boge red is the M418 sport suspension package every GT should use. Look under the carpet in the trunk, there should be the option code sticker. The amount of corrosion on the car is massive, I have two 928 S, one from Austria and one from Swiss imported to north Germany and both have a little bit contact corrosion but not so much. The interior of your GT is a dream, the better side of the coin in wet climate.😊 The GT is the sportiest member of the 928 line and anblast to drive! Gary, keep on the good videos, I like your art of story telling in the clips! Viele Grüße Karsten

Just completed that exact same suspension job on my S4. I see you had Boge Reds, which are the M474 Sport Suspension option. Faff is one word, I have several more. I kept the lower ball joint on and ended up removing the lower wishbone, with more special words. Might want to check as it looks like you have a Blue and Red mix at the front. Then when all done, a trip to Centregravity to get it all dialled in. Enjoying your channel, keep up the good work.

Great video. I hate to pick holes but… 😀. as well as getting right into that rust, probably with what we used to call a “skirfer”, you probably also know that you should feather off the edges a bit more and really smooth them out as much as possible to make sure that there are no edges that might lift and to make the transition from paint to bare metal as smooth and progressive as possible. Less work for the primer and any filler to do and less chance of any sinking. I guess sinking is less of a problem these days, but it’s an old habit 😀 I guess it’s some OCD, and I know you’ve just probed the area a s a first look, but I had to say something, probably just for myself 😅 always loved the 928s Keep em coming 👍🏻

And this is why you keep your collectible cars clean, dry and in a climate controlled garage. The old man had good intentions by servicing the mechanicals (somewhat) but he obviously neglected the other parts of routine maintenance. When you see the aluminum corroding, you know the car isn't being cared for properly. Thanks for documenting this. I love 928 Porsches. Best of luck.

The red shock you removed was a Boge Sport shock. However, the grey shock you installed is a Boge NON-SPORT. It has different dampening rates. 928GT's all came with Red Boge Sport shocks.

Thanks Michael, I know and I may replace them both with the red sports ones but as I’m not considering visiting the track I’m sure the grey Boge are perfectly adequate for normal driving and let’s face it, a damn site better than what came off!! Regards.

You know joking apart John, it kind of is. Although I changed my tide in the Corniche to a stiffer Harvey Bailey style ride kit. Great work Gary, such a huge amount of graft. You'll need to change the shocks to the Koni or Bilstein versions. You couldn't tell because of the rust but that was an adjustable height coil over shock that you took off and hence one of the perches had an internal thread. Best of luck!!
@classic.obsession Жыл бұрын
Yes, you may be right. I was under the impression that the shocks were an option and grey were the standard option and considering I’m not going to be taking the car on track days that the grey ones would be more than adequate. Regards.

Factory Guards Red is a single-stage (no clear coat) paint so go careful on the cut and polish. Paint can be thin and any body parts with a clear coat have been previously repaired/repainted by someone who didn't know Porsche. Cheers Tony
@magnusdanielsson2749 Жыл бұрын
I got a Pontiac Fiero with a similar red paint. But even though its a one stage paint I couldnt get the parts I painted to match up with a one stage paint. Had to go over with clear coat to get it to match the original paint. Not sure why 🤷♂️ Im certainly not a painter. But with the clear and some buffing I got most of it flowing seamlessly with the original paint. Old oxidised red paint certainly doesnt look nice but man is it a joy to buff it and get the deep red back 👌
@michaelmeredith912 Жыл бұрын
@@magnusdanielsson2749 If I’m not mistaken the Fiero used a “gel coat” like on a fibreglass boat which I think is different to ‘single stage’ paint. Single Stage paint is still available by Glasurit who was the OE paint likely…

928 is such an undervalued car, it was the first car that Porsche designed from a clean sheet of paper and was engineered to a level no car had ever been before. I have a copy of the book "Project 928" it shows the development that went into the 928, they took a 72 Audi 100 coupe, cut it in half down the length and put 100mm in to make it a wider test bed. the 4.7 V8 was installed and they did then they they sent it all over the world doing big miles in every imaginable climate for stamina testing, I wonder where that car is today ??

Hey Gary, another good video. Yes, those Mirka sander kits are the dogs. I wish I could have afforded one when I was doing all my sanding. I have an air DA, but they knock the hell out of the compressor, which as you say annoys the neighbours and the wife! The original paint would have been single stage 2 pack. Some pro painters still default to this for certain colours, particularly reds, yellows, oranges etc. Personally, I would not go to the bother of clearcoating the old paint. If you were to magnify the old paint finish, you would see that it has gone porous over the years, and the deep pores will now be full of silicones and other contaminants from previous compounding and polishing. You can only lightly sand it if you want to keep the colour intact, so there is a strong chance of micro-bubbling and poor adhesion of the clearcoat. Bite the bullet, repaint the whole car in basecoat and clearcoat, job done. My son has a flame red Astra Sri turbo, a really bad colour for fading, I repainted that car with Valspar basecoat and HB Body clearcoat about 7 years ago, it sleeps out in all weathers and it has not faded one bit, it still looks like new.

Brilliant work as usual, BUT!!! It’s the wrong shock as Karsten already said. GT were identified by option code 474 and it meant the car had gas pressurised Boge Sport shocks which are always red and are still available from OPC! Don’t leave it like that - the Sachs grey isn’t matched to the GT only springs. Sorry that it’s not great news, but it’s worth being done right!

From experience, painting a good few of those babies usually in Guards red the paint match is achievable for daytime presentation but shows up real bad under streetlights in the form of metamerism which is pretty bad to live with.This Ferrari 328 GTB (Rosso Corsa) I’m just doing is mint in the daytime but chess board metameric nighttime..hence trim strip and full hit ..sorted.Cheers,keep up the good work.

Porsche will have used Glasurit paint at the factory, same as VW/Audi, Guards red just like VW Tornado red does die with UV, even once buffed it will start to die again, seen it a lot on Audi 80, Golf's and type 44 100's . I'd be inclined to paint both the roof and the bonnet, you have a large width of wing next to the bonnet that won't help with edge to edge matching. Will you be going for solid colour or clear over base? I always prefair working with clear over base. Aluminium corrosion can be hard to kill, we found that brushing epoxy resin over the bare alloy before paint would stop it coming back on early Range Rovers and Defenders. Keep up the great work. 👍
