RARE TILTING TARGET SIGNAL Protects Railroad Diamond On Indiana & Ohio Railway In Washington CH Ohio

Rare Railroad Signal Still In Use! Tilting Target Signal At A Railroad Diamond In Washington Courthouse, Ohio. Indiana And Ohio Railway Local Switching Freight Train Crossing The Diamond On The Way To Switch Customers. Includes Intermodal Train On Tight Curve In Circleville, Ohio & A Local Norfolk Southern Railroad Switcher Crossing The Main Railroad Crossing At The Grain Elevators.
I wanted to show this rare tilting target signal on the Indiana & Ohio Railway in Washington Court House, Ohio. This is the last one on CSX tracks. I&O leases these lines from CSX. CSX had one in North Vernon, Indiana but it was taken out about a year ago. I have videos of it in use so check them out! If you know where there is another tilting target signal still in use leave me a comment below. The conductor opened a box on the side of the crossing shanty. Then he pushed a button that made the blade go vertical. This I&O local crew came on duty at 8am in Washington Court House. I have filmed them switching before. I&O uses 161.220 for the road freights here and 161.430 for the switching freights. Look how many cars this single Geep pulled over the railroad diamond by itself! It is flat here.
After I filmed this train I headed east to Circleville, Ohio. Check out the intermodal train coming around the tight curve! I also included a Norfolk Southern local switcher passing the grain elevator with a few box cars. I shot a lot of film here so look for Part 2 out soon. Since I filmed in 4K I can't really make this video much longer. Part 2 will include a look at some abandoned railroad track and spurs in town. Trains use 161.190 for the NS road channel here.
We also see the remains of the Midland Ohio train station. On the way home I stopped here to get a brick and show what it looks like. It sure does look different without the station. I'm glad I got some recent videos of trains passing it on both sides before some fool burned it down on the first day of 2024. Midland is on the same line that goes through Washington Court House. Sad for me to see the Midland Depot gone and cleaned off it's lot. It was a really great designed building. Glad you got a brick from it. About the B&O whistle post, I have one in use in my front landscaping if that counts, lol! It's very similar to the one that you showed, except mine is the shield shaped with the top 2 sides concave slightly, where-as this one seemed to be flat all around.

Wow it's a wonder that cast iron whistle sign is still there.moat of them are gone. The Middletown and Hummelstown R.R. still has their old cast iron railroad crossing signs still in use. They use an original Western Maryland Alco S6 locomotive for shifting With the original Western Maryland logo paint.

Well, JT...your visits to Washington Courthouse and Circleville took me (w-a-y) back to my days in Athens as an Ohio University student during the early 1970's, when B&O still ran a line -- literally -- thru the OU campus (now a bike trail of some sort). "Back in the day", I made many trips to WCH and Circleville. You always say, "...wait, there's more", and when you rummaged through that brick pile, I "couldn't believe my eyes"...vintage bricks from the town I graduated college from!! I remember -- back then -- somebody telling me about a foundry that once existed there (Athens). Very cool... Re: the unique whistle post @20:22, down here in Central Florida along the former ACL (now CSX's "A" Line), there are numerous vintage concrete (ACL) whistle posts that -- in lieu of the classic "W" -- actually have (Morse-code-inspired) black-painted "dashes-and-dots" (positioned vertically) on a white-painted concrete "paddle" sunk into the ballast. Talk about "unique"... 👍👍👌👌

Cool old school relics of the past in Washington C.H., Brian. The tilting target signal and the brass whistle marker, also a beautiful steam engine w/ a bright red caboose circa 1939. My wife and I would use my vacation and visit her kin in Eastern Ky., we didnt like to travel Interstate 75 to Lexington because of too much traffic and because never ending highway work always causing delays once we go closer to Cincinnati. So we would drive west on US 35 from Dayton and pick up Rte 68 just outside of xenia and follow it all the way to the Ohio River crossing at Aberdeen into Maysville, Ky. , going thru towns like Hillsboro , Cuba, Midland and Westboro and your hometown of Mt. Orab. Once we stopped and ate at the restaurant there in Mt. Oran and it broke our hearts when we found out it had been turned into a used car lot.😢 I think Midland was the town we nicknamed z- town because of the way rte 68 zigzaged through it. Or was that Westboro? I'm sorry for the long post , I'm going down memory lane. We made a few trips in the late 80' s and early 90's. Thanks Jawtooth Bless You.

You drove within two miles of my farm. That restaurant relocated. They built a brand new building right across from the hospital in Mt Orab off of Brooks Malott Road. You can eat there and get a table with a view of the railroad, although it's a half mile away. The road on 68 zig zags through Westboro. That is where the old B&O line crossed on its way to Hillsboro. It has been gone for decades

Thank you for showing us the Tilting Target Signal at Washington Courthouse, Ohio, Jaw Tooth! I never realized that there was still another working Tilted Target Signal in the United States until showed us this one. I had seen a video of the Tilting Target Signal at North Vernon, Indiana in action in someone else's video. That was a long Indiana & Ohio local that passed the Tilting Target Signal. The Indiana & Ohio must have several lumber yards on that line based on all the center beam flat cars on that train. The Norfolk Southern trains that you caught at Circleville; Ohio were interesting to watch. The intermodal train was long and needed the mid-train DPU.

When I was a kid we wouldn't walk the tracks out of town and cross a trestle over the river to get to a farm pond where we'd shoot frogs. There was one of those cast iron whistle signs along our route. Man, were they ever thick!!! A .22 or 12 gauge would hardly scratch them! My friend had a .243 Winchester rifle and you had to use that or something comparable to put a hole in that sign. Now, more than 55 years later, I really regret doing that. 😮😢😢

Somebody will use those bricks for a new project or a historical restoration. It is hard to get period bricks for any kind of rebuild of historic buildings. Some of the old, brick manufacturers are still around and they can produce bricks to match the ones that they made many years ago, but getting original bricks is the way to go.
