Rare Trench Lighter Restoration from World War I

Rare antique trench lighter restoration from World War I.
This old lighter was found on a World War I battlefield on the Eastern Front. The lighter was made in the period 1914-1918. The lighter was rusty. I decided to restore the lighter. I removed the rust and cleaned the lighter. I hope you liked my restoration.

Beautiful work! I do not find much has been lost in terms of any pattern - perhaps 2 faint lines on top, & 2 on the bottom - considering where it was found & the accumulation of gunk on it, a light cleaning & restoration would make it just a display &/or a museum - type piece....& as this is yours, you did the right thing to return it to it's former glory....I am sure that any serious collector would have it in their collection...however, if I were you, I'd keep & use it....What a conversation starter! 😊 Good job!

OK. It looks nice, but... You have lost an awful lot of detail on the body of the lighter due to sanding and over polishing. Much of the original decorative engraving was polished away. It is your item, but as a collector, I would not want the after version you have. So much of an item's value is tied up in the amount of original finish and detail the item has. Cleaning and restoration of function is fine as long as original or exact duplication of parts can be achieved. Keep trying!
