Wes Anderson should do a film about an Oly lifter at the 1976 Olympics. Music, fashion, funny hair and moustaches, fat dudes in tiny singlets surrounded by smartly dressed refs and officials in coat and tie, all quirky elements are there.

Folks, if I had to spend the day as a spectator in a gym, THIS would be the place, any day, over any US gym currently out there. Think of what one could learn from the calibre of talent walking around in there vs. the mirror-gawking pumpers and pasty doughboy-looking tatooed "powerlifters" currently residing in our gyms here. Rigert was, for many of us, our idol back then, and hands down was one of the sport's greatest achievers. I remember meeting him back in Dec '75 at the Continental Europe vs. The Americas competition in Gettysburg, after he set a new world record C&J of 485. The man just glowed, and what a stage presence! I shall never forget it, nor that near-legendary Soviet team he lifted for. Yeah, he has just one Olympic gold medal, but he also has 62 world records.

So you prefer to learn about Olympic weightlifting by spending time on an Olympic weightlifting dedicated gym full of Olympic calibre competitors instead of a powerlifting gym. I mean, it only makes sense...

Rigert to me was the greatest weightlifter of all time though he has only one Olympic Gold Metal to show for his effort. He pushed himself to the limit at every contest he competed in. He was no slacker like Alexeev could be or head case like Valery Shary. Here is my analogy to my two great sport heros. David Rigert is to Olympic Weightlifting as Carlos Lopes is to Marathon running!!
@418cjpaul Жыл бұрын
why do you think Shary was a head case?! I saw him lift and he seemed very normal
@chuckbuckbobuck Жыл бұрын
@@418cjpaul You didn't see him in the 72 Olympics where he and Rigert both bombed out. Both of them were inconsolable and were ignominiously sent back to the USSR in disgrace. A bemused Lief Jenssen quickly pulled his starting lifts down to lighter weights and coasted to victory being the first and still the only Norwegian weightlifter to ever win a gold metal in the summer Olympics! In fact, I belive he is the only Norwegian to win a Gold metal in the summer Olympics.
