As a teenager in the late 1980s/early 1990s I was acutely aware of the influence James Brown's music had on the musical landscape, With more than just hip-hop artists being inspired to sample his work. The REAL moment that I realized how influential Mr. Brown's music could be was when I attended an "Oldies But Goodies" party in Newark in the late 1990s. I was there with people who enjoyed these songs when they were brand new,and believe me when I tell you, when the DJ played these songs, It was like the whole room turned into 25 year Olds again. The Raw intensity of his music conveyed itself on a dance floor in a way it never could on the radio. For any younger people intrigued by his music, I'd strongly recommend you seeking out venues that play his songs in a live setting. You'll have a healthy respect for his work when you see how it makes people feel on a dance floor.

This clip is so Hip-Hop most people don't even know it. The whole persona of a rapper is attitude, swag, and confidence. JB's stage persona, especially during these years, exemplified all of that. Bobby Byrd is the original hype man. JB is the original MC. Instead of 2 turntables, he put together the funkiest backing band: The Mighty JB's!!

Brother James was 38 years old, when he cut this track, but he moved with the grace of a man half his age. In the 1960 and 70s, he led the best group of musicians in the world. (They had to be, JB was a very tough taskmaster). No Michael Jackson, Prince, Iggy and George Clinton without Soul Brother No.1 Great stuff. James and Bobby represented a golden period of black American music which no longer exists anymore. His legacy has remained timeless.
