You should have tested the fan on the CPU with NO heatsink. That would have given you a benchmark to determine how effective the heatsink really is. I suspect the biggest problem with PI heatsinks is the adhesive layer is too thick.

and FYI... you can buy cases that include a small fan for dirt cheap. I just got a clear one with a fan for like 4 dollars. and some of those cases look REALLY cool

So heatsinks for the Pi might finally be worth getting, they haven't been needed nor done much on the previous models. A cool setup could be to find a small fan to put ontop of the heatsink, poweres by the IO pins. Should be able to fit inside the case and shouldn't be particularly noisy.
@BartTech8 жыл бұрын
+Emil Blem A small fan (40x10 mm) should be a good one. Powered from IO or USB. Happy moddi'n!

some Asus mother boards come with a small fan for the vrm's it would be ideal

It has to run on 5 volt though, but i mean, isnt the pi 3 powered by 12 volts? isnt it possible to solder onto that 12v?
@klinkkeng23387 жыл бұрын
No its powered by 5 volts not 12.

With my Raspi3, it got hot enough that it erased data on the sdcard and the usb memory stick I had in it. both had to be reformatted. They are both still usable, so luckily no hardware damage, just data loss. I was running Ubuntu and watching video from KZbin each time I had these heat issues(yep, it is a repeatable experiment), I haven't heard of any others having this severe of an issue, but heat is a problem with RPi3. I now run OpenElec Kodi and can run it without a fan, but still keep heat sinks on both chips on top and the chip on bottom(which seems to create the most heat). No problems with Kodi. To keep Ubuntu around, I got an Odroid C2 with the eMMC card, and it runs Ubuntu MATE with ease.

There are nice ABS cases with small fans installed available on Ebay for around $3.25 US or slightly bigger Plexiglass enclosures with fans for around $5 US. Copper heat sink kits can be purchased for $2 US. These fans can be plugged into the GPIO on the 5v side for full fan operation or the 3.3v side to run them slower and quieter if they're too loud. Being able to run the low power fans from the GPIO (no additional power supply needed), makes it a no-brainer for me.

totally needed. It runs very hot, close to 70 celcius to be specific when i run games on retropie. I'm considering on getting a fan as well.
@eLJaybud8 жыл бұрын
Just fit a heatsink and a case that's just two pieces of plexiglass and some posts. Still get the circulation and some protection.

A good test, but I didn't see mentioned what task is the Pi 3 running during the test? Normal media centre usage - or were you running a benchmark, like sysbench?

Heatsink + fan is the best option in any scenario! Just dont let the fan run on full blast, but on a much slower RPM. Any decent 120mm fan with a reducer in a cabinet will do fine without any real noise, if mounted correctly
@The-Nil-By-Mouth8 жыл бұрын
120mm fan is a bit big though. One of the selling points of the Pi is its size.
@LampuhkapsChannel8 жыл бұрын
true, but is easily available at pretty much every store and pretty much always pretty silent. small fans make an awful lot of noise and are not always easily obtainable.
@ikyogre18 жыл бұрын
+Lampuhkap's Shaving Channel I use a small fan from an old GPU, and it plugs right into the GPIO. 111f without and about 80f with the fan on.
@pikachuchujelly76287 жыл бұрын
I don't think a fan is necessary on the Pi 3 unless you're overclocking. I really like my Pi to be silent. Heatsinks are good, though. I was building a cross-compiler and the Pi kept throttling at 80 degrees, and it took forever.

I have pi2 using it as a nas. I'm gonna upgrade it to pi3 this week, but after seeing this video I'll def be buying a heatsink.. I think raspberry pi.org needs to look at this. maybe a small fan design should be released to drop temps further. great video Bart.

@Cloutian5168 жыл бұрын
This is good enough. I used heatsinks with the RPi2 since it was overclocked and it helped keep it from throttling but I'm assuming your tests were without any overclock. I suppose it time to either get a case that has much better airflow or make a really small fan to run off the GPIO. Thumb up~!

With my Pi 3, i use the panel app that has the temp and cpu meter as well. My temp never went above 65°C and my idle temp was around 50°C. I do occasionally feel some heat come out. I will attach my heat sink that came with the kit and see what happens. Curious, did the other Pi models get as hot as the Pi3?
@tomstdenis7 жыл бұрын
See I wouldn't use the kernel for measuring temp. I have an IR gun and in mupenplus or snes9x I see a max temp of ~49C with my Rpi3 inside a case. This is with standard clocks (1200MHz). So unless your over clocking or in a really hot climate you don't need a heatsink.

Is there a case that can accept a pi 3 B with heatsinks, a fan and a 3.5" or larger screen?
@MobileDecay5 жыл бұрын
My Pi 3 overheats quite fast in my Megapi case even with heat syncs. I ordered a couple fans. 2 just in case 1 fails. Throttling causes massive performance dips in mame and PlayStation.

dont blame the fan, it runs at the speed its told to, just reduce the speed to the lowest it can it silent, about 500rpm for 140mm fan is excellent
@BlazinNova6 жыл бұрын
Um. I made not now much about water cooling but isn't that a bit much for it? I mean you could just buy a new case with good air flow and also have a good heatskin or none at all I maybe wrong but that's my opioion.

This makes me wonder if cutting a small opening in the top case to fit a small 5V fan would help. I assume that the case would need extra vent holes to blow out the hot air. The really small 5V fans aren't too loud.
@budzclark15567 жыл бұрын
you can buy cases that include a small fan for dirt cheap. I just got a clear one with a fan for like 4 dollars
@stephenmartin83317 жыл бұрын
I cut out the bottom of my Pi case to make room for a heatsink, since the bottom chip gathers the most heat. then mounted a small 5v fan and just leave the case sitting upside down.
@eWhizz6 жыл бұрын
You really need to test how long it takes to get up to throttling temp and then how quick it goes down again. This time is critical. You will not be pegging the CPU out all the time, but your ant to know how efficiently the heatsink (or without) the CPU can get below temperature in order to run at full speed again.
@scaleop48 жыл бұрын
if your going to overclock it your going to need a heatsink anyways. ..1450mhz is my max oc.

I usually run 1400 with OC ram, added GPU memory and etc. Able to run KZbin on Raspbian at 480p with very little spikes (with tv running 1080p because it won't recognize my TV and allow me to change the resolution). I'm sure if you have the monitor at 720p you could run KZbin 100% flawlessly at 480p

@consig1iere2948 жыл бұрын
+Malcolm Hunter What about it?
@The-Nil-By-Mouth8 жыл бұрын
Consig1iere Wouldn't that help bring the temperature down further?
@consig1iere2948 жыл бұрын
+Malcolm Hunter Yes it would but then again it depends on what you are planning to do with the RPi. If you are not planning on anything CPU intensive all the time then a small heatsink is adequate. The difference between a slightly bigger heat sink and a smaller one would be slim if you are using light application that are not CPU intensive.
