1:00 You don't need ventilation? As your heat reference at 15:30 indicates it gets hot. Reviews already with it under a heat camera beg to differ (as in using it under load such as those dual 4k video outputs). It (Pi4) should have come with a heatsink as standard, not a mere option. It is (quote) _"uncomfortably hot"_ when doing any decent work (not even thrashing it - just video like not even a movie duration). Ironic how there is a heatwave when it launches. It is a prebuilt system board with an operating system called "noobs" (or raspbian) indicating it is for people who are learning (noobs), not just experts. The official keyboard mouse case bundle has a case that traps in heat. Personally I think if they were going for a larger board anyway, they could have made it a lot larger and thereby made a case that is bigger with better space to keep it cool. I'd have opted for a 8core or dual quad running lower and underclocked, not largely about making 4k dual video out as a priority. A larger board with it doing 8way parallel processing could have helped students learning about blake2sp and basic polynomials (which some GCSE maths students read about in revision guides between GCSE math and AS or ALevel maths, even if they only wish to do quadratic equations at GCSE). A bigger case and board being twice an old Pi3, like two side by side, like other brands can mean a square fan could have gone on it if desired. The a53 has been described as server class (and a bunch get used). The a72 is described as mobile device class. Dual quad a53 (like a humble parallel server) or octa-core would have made server sense, let alone a computer module breakout edge connector like say the turing board but with over 8 slots, not just 7. Turing (the father of computing) was largely famous when about encryption and blake2sp would have been a good learning situation with 8way parallel. It need not be the fastest board for that. It is about learning. Even if they did not go that route (a53 or octacore), the heat it has and its lack of ventilation in a case they want to get extra revenue from is a poor show when they could have prioritised cooling to be "enough" (i.e. don't make the board hot, and spread it over a different CPU setup and put in a better heatsink). A counterargument some might try to make be that they are selling it at a loss. However some people would rather have a board by a different brand that does the right things and costs more (which they may or may not end up using headless). A dose of plague might be 50p but it does not make the purchase good value. People use clusters of boards too so the board shape and its heat problems on the pi4 might get in the way of that with its a72 dominating the cooling space in a case with its hot a72 spreading heat over the PCB when people have to put in a heatsink. The Pi's website shops (of recommended sellers) has a tiny _"optional heatsink"_ and it will confuse people who will then look fo a bigger one. A good heatsink should have been a standard and supplied (or just us a different chip and do not allude to dual 4k hdmi, Pi). Those hdmi ports will snap like Kofi Annan famously breaking and winding a _OneLaptopPerChild XO_ computer charge handle. And the _"case and keyboard mouse"_ bundle does not give breakout _"mini to female hdmi"_ to convert and keep them safe but foolishly has two hdmi that suggest plugging straight into a monitor. People (kids and gutted parents alike) will plug that Pi4 straight into two HDMI screens to run 4k and then see the thing overheat and fail to understand why bad consequences occur. When little Timmy and Tammy plug in their Pi, tech nerds saying _"you get what you pay for"_ will anger the parents or the silver-surfer. It's not even as if the board currently having more support is an argument as with the Pi3 (which is supported). Debian and BSD and RISCOS (for video issues) and Ubuntu are not "properly" out for Pi4 yet. Or amibian and the media centre stuff.

It does have a GPU, slightly better than the previous one I think As for PCIe, I think the board is smaller than a x16 slot

Could one combine multiple RP4s to create a more capable computer?
@totalermist5 жыл бұрын
That's not possible in terms of general use. For specialised tasks like certain simulations that can be run in parallel, combining multiple RP4s is an option, though. General compute tasks (like running desktop applications) cannot share resources like RAM or CPU-cores across multiple machines and thus wouldn't benefit at all from such combination.

The overheating may be even worse if the board is encased. I would like to see tests about this.
@4g0tt3nSou15 жыл бұрын
Too many variables. It depends on the case, the cooling solutions used. In the high end, you could water/liquid cool the chips, and still keep it portable. On low end, a good heatsink and fan might bring down temps. Too many possible combos and scenarios
@ScottTeuber5 жыл бұрын
Gary, can I assume that the overheating issue you were having on the Pi 4 was the result of not having cooling sinks and a cooling fan on the board? GREAT vid, thx!

Cooling helps but also there are some firmware updates that also help. I might do a video about the latter if I find time.

I didn't finish this review because a couple of things said at the beginning of the review were (I feel) a bit misleading. You can't say EVERYTHING will be three times faster because that is a huge generalization and doesn't take other things into account. Also, the main reason it can transfer at over 100MBps is because of the USB 3, USB 2 is not capable of that speed, but it wasn't mentioned until after the speed is talked about.
@GaryExplains5 жыл бұрын
To answer your points. I have a complete set of benchmarks pinned at the top of the comments. It is indeed a generalization that everything is 3 times faster, because some things are 4 times faster. As for the 100Mbps, you seem to be forgetting thst the Pi 3+ had USB 3 and Gigabit Ethernet, but they couldn't realize their max potential due to the bus designs.

@4g0tt3nSou15 жыл бұрын
I would say while it isn't required, I recommend a fan and heatsink. As for OC, this isn't something you want to over clock... This is a project board used for server applications and custom programs. If you are in need of higher clock speeds, the Pi's are not for you.

Just a small correction. 64bit linux kernel can support 32bit userspace applications. So a golang binary compiled for 32bit rpi should run fine on a rpi 4 running 64bit kernel. But the reverse is not true though. If possible, could you share the geekbench scores?

i assume the gigabit ethernet shares with the 5GBPS from USB3? (as do maybe does other stuff on there that's internally wired to the usb3 bus where they were on the usb2 bus before?) you'll probably mention it somewhere in these 17 minutes also, i'm kind of in the market for a SBC that can sync laptop monitor connection like them 30-pins without bulky converters, i got some laptop screens, and 30-pin connector is pretty standardized, right? i could imagine there is standardized hardware you could program without being specific to 1 panel? 3 times faster you say? i like having rudamentary setups to code some stuff on and play some emulators when i'm visiting friends that have a spare monitor, this will be a very welcome friend.

The RPi4 is listed as doing h.265 decode at 4k60, could be a software-issue (drivers?)
@GaryExplains5 жыл бұрын
If the hardware is as capable as claimed, then yes it is a software issue. But only supporting H.265 and not H.264, VP9 or WebM means that 4K support is limited at best.
