I understand this isn't quite necessarily the best place to ask, but I feel a good video topic to cover would be OrangePi 5 vs Raspberry Pi 5 for emulation purposes. It's difficult to keep track of which system is a better pick/buy for an emulation box, OrangePi 5 seems to be available, albeit a bit more expensive, but does have technically better hardware. Raspberry Pi 5 seems to have better support/drivers/pricing, albeit availability is much more difficult. Understandably, it's early in RPI5 development and things can improve, and so can OPI5 if driver support improves, but a current day evaluation of framerates on supported game titles would be very welcome. Thank you.

I own both an Orange Pi 5 and a Raspberry Pi 5 (I was able to purchase one as a priority being a subscriber to the MagPi magazine) but due to exam studies that end this week, I've not had time to sit down and do comparison testing between the two. I only use Gentoo Linux in my home environments and have done for 20 years now - if you're not aware, it's a "roll your own" and build from source distro that can run on anything, and in the past I've built it on all the RPi's up to 4, a couple of Banana Pi's and some older Orange Pi's. The nice thing about that is that when you're running the same OS with the same optimised kernel across all those devices, you can do some true comparison testing - but it does take time to sit down and build correctly. The problem with vendor-provided Linux builds, especially the Orange Pi ones, is that they are generally not built as optimally as they can be anyway and whilst I utterly respect what the team at Armbian does where they do their builds for many SBCs, again I'd argue that their builds are 90% of the where they need to be in terms of optimisation. So it's something I will look at towards the end of this week and if I come up with something interesting I will let Lee here know - I don't make YT videos myself, it's something I keep thinking about but I just have too many other things going on in my life right now. For example, if I get two good Gentoo builds going, then I can make them available on Github or somewhere like that for others to test. I do believe its possible to get better 3D acceleration in both boards.

With all honesty the GPU on the Rpi5 is relatively poor in comparison to the RK3588(s) that are out there. There is a pretty huge difference in Gflops and apparaently Arm are currently collaborating with Collabora for all Mali opensource drivers but Panthor and mainline is looking a few Linux kernel releases away. Whilst Panfork runs on the Rockchip BSP.

i LOVE giant stupid coolers. All my pc builds have had super overkill coolers. I'm so happy this exists. I'll certainly be purchasing one myself. Pi's are the Nintendo of computers, they're just plain fun.

I hope someone makes a chunky passive cooler like I have for one of my pi 4's that touches all the chips that can use cooling. It was cheap, heavy, completely quiet and nice and simple. Every case I looked at is either not touching all chips, just doesn't have enough metal to pull the heat away or has a fan.

I'm looking forward to the low profile ice cooler. I did order the active cooler with my Raspberry Pi 5. So I will just use that for now. I hope everything ships out soon.
@jed20559 ай бұрын
I had a similar looking cooler on a PC years ago. Nothing new there but it keeps the Pi cpu cool; that's the main thing. I wouldn't fork out for one of these unless it specifically cooled more chips. For the money it should do more just because it could. I haven't stressed my Pi 5 yet but I think the active cooler (almost here now) will do an admiral job even when I set it to 3Ghz plus it won't be NOT locked away in some restrictive and claustrophobic box.

hanbrake on a normal computer uses everything it can. Here it looked like it was using one core and a half. Did that preset use hardware acceleration? Was the encoding somehow bottlenecked by GPU or Disk? I remember on the pi4 handbrake could not be used with software hevc due to a bug and could access only one coere in software h264. No hardware acceleration was available unfortunately.

That's what I was thinking. I think stress would have done better for a temp test. Maybe run a GPU benchmark at the same time to really load everything up.
@dominick253 Жыл бұрын
3:20 yeah mine I could only get to 2.8 GHz in 900 MHz on the GPU for overclock. I could probably turn the over voltage up past three but I don't really want to destroy my brand new pi. Either way at 2.8 GHz it's still really fast. The pie four was not usable for me as a desktop I ended up using it as a router which it's perfect for, probably overkill.

I would have no problem putting those copper heat sinks on the silicone elements but isn't there an issue with galvanic corrosion when you put a copper heat sink on a chip with an aluminium shield?

Only when electric current passing with presence of moisture or water. If you have no current, no water and/or a layer of adhesive or thermal compound that separates two metals, you'll have no issues. BTW heatspreader lids are not made from aluminium

All my 4's have the ICE tower and I was hoping to see this on the 5 too. These are by far the best to keep my Pi4 cool and hopefully my Pi5 too. I was hoping to see that we can change the temperature/fan speed profile using some Raspi-config setting. I think that with both the official case and the official active cooler the CPU temperature gets too hot before the fan ramps up

It depends if they need the overclock or not. I'm not particularly interested in emulating consoles, I come from the realms of home computers like the ZX Spectrum and Commodore Amiga, as well as wanting to emulate arcade games through MAME and maybe a few MS-DOS games. None of that requires particularly high powered SBCs anyway when it comes to emulation.

With the Pi 5 coming with an official heatsink and fan, a comparison with any third party 'solutions' in order to ascertain whether any of them actually have any real value shoild ideally be the norm. It was disappointing to hear that he supplier asked for a delay in the review because they were out of stock because it can easily give a reasonable impression that what we are seeing is not a review but an advert, potentially calling into question the impartiality of the review.

advert means that the channel has to "obey" the manufacturer about what to say, which did not happen, they only asked for a delay to improve customer satisfaction imo

It realy is silly to not use the heat sinks or the official active cooler in that case expecaly on a PI 5. There is a marked improvement with either solution. Slow twisting slightly side to side of the heat sinks during removal will almost always make them easily release. DO NOT pry them up from one edge as the adhesive is strongest against that approach, just wiggle them as you pull them up vertically.
