Thank you! Much more coming! Received a new touch-screen display that I'll be testing as well as an entire kit that will be shipping in Jan. Both arrived yesterday, so I'll be testing both over the next few days. Should be very interesting stuff you'll see soon.

Same issue here. Closest I got was getting through the first boot config (to which it crashed, and rebooted. Then:) got to the desktop with no taskbar and not able to do anything except turn on wifi/bluetooth, accessility, dark mode, and night light. Couldn't shutdown, so I forced shut down with power button on my Pi5. Now I have a pile of EXT4-fs errors on my screen

As far as I know, currently you can only boot Ubuntu 23.10 from microSD card. It will not boot from USB flash drive or SSD using SATA to USB adapter.

Try reformatting the card (here's how: wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Format_as_FAT32_Pi_Imager ), then re-write the image for Ubuntu and see if that helps. If not, please try a different card. The one you're using may be defective, it's rare but can happen.

do I need to press something on the keyboard or something? It's my 5th tutorial, I flashed Ubuntu, put it in the pi5 and "nothing happens" (technically, I'm in the CLI of pi5) Everyone else seems to have Ubuntu just launch by itself...
@WagnersTechTalk

After flashing the Ubuntu image to the microSD, insert it into the Pi5 and make sure it's green (powered on). It should boot up. If not, most likely reason is the microSD card is corrupt. Try a different brand card or re-flash your current one. Something here should help.

May not be your issue, but sometimes you can get cards that are fake. That is, a company will brand it as a name-brand card but won't be the made by that company (fake/illegal card). I've had this happen with USB sticks in the past claiming to be 1TB sticks but actually weren't name brand and poor quality.

A few things you can try: 1) reboot your computer 2) try a different card and/or re-format your current one using Pi Imager, then try to re-flash it. Here's how to re-format it: wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Format_as_FAT32_Pi_Imager

Why can't you change the boot order from Ubuntu on the raspberry pi 5? This pisses me off. Are they trying to make it proprietary meaning that you can do certain things in other desktops or OSes? I only see boot into desktop or command line.

Is there a way to change the boot order BACK to booting from a micro SD card? I got an NVMe drive that I installed Ubuntu on. I want to try a different OS on the NVMe drive, but I need to boot from the SD card in order to flash a different OS to the NVMe because I have no other way to hook up the NVMe to any other device I have. I tried just unhooking the NVMe drive, my Pi 5 just hung. I tried unhooking the hat from PCIe slot, same result. I know the micro SD card I have has a functioning version of Raspberry Pi OS, because I booted my friends RPi5 with it. So... I have no idea how undo this. I have it set, (or at least thoughtI had it set), that in the absence of an NVMe, it would boot from SD, but no dice. Anyone? Please help.

@@WagnersTechTalk I tried it a few different times, tired a different keyboard to be sure, then I even tried a wired keyboard to make sure that wasn't the problem. It just boots straight into Ubuntu still. Thank you for responding so quickly!

If you have an extra microSD card, you can go into Raspberry Pi Imager (on the PC, link here: www.raspberrypi.com/software/ ). Select the device, Pi 5. The under Choose OS select 'Misc utility images' -> Bootloader (Pi 5 family) and use one of the other bootloaders (SD Card Boot, for example). Then, when you insert the card in the Pi 5 it should apply that loader. This way it will look to SD card first, if not found then NVMe, then USB. I've not tested this in the last few months, but this should work for you.

@@WagnersTechTalk I've got a little update. So I did 'sudo apt install raspi-config', when I opened it, there was no option for boot order. So I tried editing the eeprom-config, and tried changing the boot order to 0xf416, 0xf214, but nothing changed. So, after trying a bunch of different things, I finally ended up unhooking the NVMe hat, reformatting a SD with the RPi5 bootloader, booted up with that, reformatted the same SD card with PI OS, hooked the NVMe hat back up, and it made it through the initial install just fine, after updating PI OS, it restarted to apply the updates, but it kept repeating the same lines of code, instead of booting into the OS. I turned off the power and tried rebooting it again, and now it boots to SD first, then USB, then NVMe. They all boot fine. I tried installing Linux MX, it failed, tried tried installing Slax, failed, Twister OS, failed, tried PINN Lite, failed... but it seems to be putting PI OS on the NVMe drive now... Which I hope I'm limited to PI OS or Ubarftu, but if those are my options, I'd rather have PI OS. I'm trying to decide if I like Ubarftu or Upooptu better... I think I'm going to stick with Upooptu.

Basically, Pi Imager downloads the image you selected and writes it to the microSD card. Then, when you insert that card into the Pi5, it will start up into Ubuntu. It basically handles all the downloading, extracting and writing to the card in one step to make it easy. Hope this helps.

If this device stolen can we find it?
@WagnersTechTalk
@WagnersTechTalk Ай бұрын
There might be an app. you can install, but of course it would only work if the Pi is turned on. If you have a case for it, perhaps use one of those small bluetooth trackers inside the case. That way, if it is lost/stolen, it can be tracked without being powered on. Just a thought.

Why can't you just change the boot order from the raspberry Pi itself outside of the OS? This is stupid having to change SD cards all of the time or reimage them to do certain things.
