Raspberry Pi IKEA Retro Arcade Gaming Table Build

This is a slideshow of my Raspberry Pi 3 based IKEA arcade table build. It uses the RetroPie image to provide an interface to your favourite retro games.
This IKEA "Gulliver" table has enough room for two sets of arcade controls and a 17-inch monitor. It's great with two player games such as Gauntlet, Metal Slug, Final Fight and Street Fighter. The technology used in this project could be built into almost any sort of table or cabinet.
Although other arcade tables will vary in design I hope this video will help others plan their own projects.

Retro gaming can be great fun especially some of the multiplayer games. Although some people use a 128GB SD card and fill it with thousands of games the reality is they won't play most of them. I prefer using a 32GB card and only putting games on it that anyone is ever likely to play.

I used an "arcade USB encoder". It is a small PCB that all the buttons connect to. It then connects to the Pi via a normal USB cable. RetroPie just sees it as a keyboard. During setup process you press the buttons when asked and you are ready to go! You can buy the encoder in a kit with the joystick and buttons. So I just bought 2 kits. You can see the encoders in the video. They are pale coloured with white plastic sockets for the wires. You can buy them from lots of places but I got mine from eBay : bit.ly/arcadeusbencoder

Hey I have a question what settings did you use for your Dell monitor in retropie what config file? Mine works with Noobs but I can't get it to work with retropie. I have the same monitor any help would be great thanks

A day in the life! I set a specific resolution to match the monitor in the config file at the same time I rotated the screen. I'm away from home at the moment but I'll be able to check the exact settings on Friday.

@@RPiSpy did you rotate the screen to help with the darker image because of the angle you look at the screen?

@@spaldingclan1 yes. When I tried it the normal way up the viewing angle was really bad. When playing I tend to look at it at a 45 degree angle. With the monitor upside-down the picture was so much clear. Obviously other models may vary.

Looks really cool. Any plans you can share? Also, why go 8 buttons each side when your using a Pi? Wouldn’t 6 be enough and provide more space? Great job, though!!!

I added some links to the LibreOffice files I used to create the graphics and hole templates. Although given people are likely to have different tables and/or monitors it's probably best to just create custom templates when you have some components. The joystick and button hole positions were taken from a template I got from SlagCoin.com (www.slagcoin.com/joystick/layout.html)
