jeremy d under here had a good possible solution for your wood splitter. since you have very little power atm. you could place stones in your stove or if you have an outside firepit. and heat them up. then place them around the engine wrapped in damp towels, rags or something. and cover with the tarp again 15 to 20 min before you plan to start. might help it easier to start.

Russell, you have the traction of a mountain goat walking along those rocks next to that nice stream. Interesting video. And I thought on that last one, that June Bug was afraid of those cracks I saw in the ice. Smart girl, she's like your canary in the coal mine.

I can't remember if I ask but if the stream runs consistently you could put a generator in to help the solar so you had more electricity.

That is a worry ...frozen lake or river and dogs. We lost our Brillo that way. When he didn't come n we knew something bad happened. We looked until 3:00 a m and found him frozen into the lake. He tried to keep afloat and get back on the ice but became weak. That is how we knew he did not drown. Behind him was a long track of broken ice as he kept on going but had to work too hard to keep afloat to make it to shore! When I saw your girl hop on the ice I got goosebumps. A life vest during freezing weather gives them a good chance to make it out.

Hey Russell, just a suggestion, the problem might be the antenna in the distance you are connecting to. When I moved into my rural desert cabin several years ago, my internet acted like yours. I knew one of the repair/setup guys Paul so he and the small business owner of the company came out twice to repair it and replaced my antenna, relocated the antenna from the back of the cabin to the front saying there was something blocking the connection. Then the owner blamed it on my old computer and Paul informed him it was a brand new top of the line desktop (which Paul helped me find). Then he went into my settings which were fine. I purchased the new router they recommended. Still, a crap connection with non-stop buffering. Then the owner blamed it on all the folks streaming at the same time. I knew there were only 5 homes on this connection, one a meditation retreat which rarely went online and never streamed, only using it for email, and two friends I knew never streamed because it buffered nonstop. (they thought this was the best they could get out in the boonies) So I kept sending my upload/download speeds to the owner day and night. Yea, I knew what they were calling me in the office. Finally, my friend Paul convinced the owner to replace the bigger antenna a couple of miles away that we connected to (which was expensive). Paul knew he was doing patch repairs frequently and didn't want to put out the expense for a new one for us desert hillbilly homesteaders. Problem solved and ok since then. Hope you have a cozy evening with City Girl and the pups!

Pat I can actually connect to the antenna and see what my connection is like to the tower, and I confirmed with the company yesterday that it's just congestion slowing me down. That said, relocating on a tower is not a bad idea.

@@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin High is good but at some point you have to start worrying about line loss. The ham radio geek in me says that there is a balance. In contrast to your radio internet connection to an ISP, at my nearby off-grid camp we use a cell booster system with an antenna on a TV tower. The booster comes with 50 feet of RG-59 coax so we have the Yagi antenna mounted 38 feet off the pine stump the guyed tower sits on and the antenna is pointed directly at the Bell tower in Gunter 21 kms away. We're locked to the 850 MHz cell band and get around -86 dBM signal most of the time and about 8-10 mg per second download speed using our phones as hot spots. I was able to do encrypted audio/video calls from the camp with my laptop through BBM Enterprise with fairly good reliability. Hint, if you install a tower you will have to ground it to reduce the chance of damage by lightening. The rock around your camp may already have been drilled for a ground rod for your solar power system so that's an easy connection. If not, the next best thing where there is little to no soil (you seem to have more than I do at my camp) is to buy some copper water pipe and connect to it then throw it in the pond. That's what I'll be doing in the spring with my very recently erected tower. That idea stems from a very old radio trick where, if you want to extend your ground plane and the range of your radio operations from a parked vehicle you ground your vehicle to a water body by doing something similar.

@@Snowdog070 yes its all line of sight transmission at vhf on up like that he doesn't have it mounted on the house for lighting safety I believe his unit is all contained at the antenna so he is running twisted par lan cable to the cabin so lighting safety and ground a must along with proper grounding I don't like that he has his cable running in the air straight to the cabin like to see it going straight to the ground and keeping it on the ground or buried in the ground to the cabin for possible stray lighting path to the cabin I'm sure he can find examples on the internet for proper grounding where raising the antenna will not endanger his cabin to a potential lighting strike!
