I make my chain tensioners using idler sprockets with a bearing in them. They're cheap, they last longer than anything else, they're quiet, and they also help keep the chain aligned.

All you need too protect your sprockets is a disk a little larger than the chain bolted at the hub next to the sprocket

Have two cables and two shift levers, one for upshifts, one for downshifts. Each cable would be pulling, not pushing. Cables don’t like to be pushed.

Was he using return springs? Cables should work with sufficiently powerful return springs Edit: 2 cables, just with one lever.

If you use a cable, sure, they like to always be in tension, but there are "Push Pull Control Cables" designed to push as well as they pull, but of course they are more expensive but at least they last longer and don't need their tension adjusted when they stretch since, well, they don't stretch since they aren't under tension and if they are then they're being used wrong. Regardless, his method of using rods and levers is just fine, if he likes it that way I'll respect that despite me being one of the ones suggesting the push-pull cables. Oh well, I think rods and levers is a cool solution XD

The chain(s) will eat through the swing arm. On dirt bikes they use nylon to protect the aluminum swinger and it is a “consumable”.

You need to pick one bolt pattern for the sprockets and stick with it. It would save a lot of headache when it comes to stuff like this. If you pick a specific application (ie 2005 gsxr1000) then everything will line up without any issues. I know that specific Suzuki bolt pattern was used on hundreds of bikes ranging from small 2 strokes to big bikes, so there are many sprocket options that will fit it.

Guy he had to change it because there was no way to fit that small of a sprocket on that big of a pattern. Now. If he had picked a bolt pattern that was real small to begins with he would have been fin. But there usually isn’t a happy medium when you have to drop that many teeth

@@Mad.Man.Marine I don’t think you understand what I am saying. He needs to go to one hub style for every build he does. That way, everything will be interchangeable. Pick one that gives a lot of options and you are golden. Also, the sprocket size vs bolt pattern wasn’t the problem, it was the availability of a sprocket in that size with the correct bolt pattern. That’s why I was saying to pick a hub, like I suggested, that was used on everything from dirt bikes to sport bikes, meaning a huge range of sizes are easy to find.

Yeah I was going to comment that all he had to do was going with an Azusa sprocket hub with a known bolt pattern and match sprockets that fit in the tooth size he needs. Would've saved him hours of machining and would've maybe taken an hour tops of new sprockets and redoing the chains. Another thing is, split sprockets so that way it's less hassle to change hard to reach areas.

If the chain tensioner is still noisy or wearing fast you might want to relocate it to the bottom of the chain where it gets slack when you accelerate.

I am surprised you have not made yourself a motorised turntable for welding around hubs and likewise, like a lazy Suzan with a stepper motor a arduino board and potentiometer as a speed controller. You will be able to get your hubs etc turning the perfect speed for welding smoothly with great results. 👍

Great project! I would recommend some form of a firewall between you and cooling system, if you blow a hose or overheat the machine you could get burned badly.

chain tensioner out of plastic is also very durable, wondered why you made the first out of steel. at the beginning the chain will grind grooves into the plastic and you have to retide the chain, but once the grooves are deep enough the chain run on its rollers over the chain tensioner roll an wouldn´t wear down very much any longer.

Your Steel chain tensioner wheel is a good idea you just need to reinforc it With The right Material or structure like Linex or Raptor bedliner Good for wear Resistant when you Slide stuff in and out of a truck Bad and sound dampening tow.

Great job doing your upgrades Chris. I would recommend adding an expansion tank to your radiator. The motorcycle radiator needs one as there is no room in the rad itself. You should still have one from that bike wreck. Great video again. Thanks

Please hide your wiring in the frame. Drill a hole, fish your wiring through, and install a rubber grommet to protect the wire from chaffing on the metal. It will clean that buggy up! You make me want to get a lathe to be able to send my projects to the next level. Also over in TN so give me a shout.

Put the shifter on the left side, so simple. A direct linkage is all that’s required. No bell cranks needed.

Cables are really only designed to work in a 'pulling' direction. No matter what diameter or how stiff they might be. The best way I've found to use cables - not least to reduce/eliminate slack or free play in the linkage is to use a 'closed cable' system. That is to say, have one cable connected FROM the gear lever (in this case), to whatever you want pulled, and then another cable is attached to the rear of that thing, and route the cable back to the other side of the your gear lever. Make the cables adjustable so they can be reduce/eliminate any or all of the free play. This way, the cables effectively make a closed, adjustable loop. Job done. Try it maybe, and I'm sure you'll love it and won't go back to janky old rods. Regards Mark in the UK

Just a thought. Next time try two cables. One top one bottom. That way there is always one pulling. I’ve done it on both motorcycle go carts I’ve built a d it’s smooth as butter.

I was yelling at the phone to take the cable off of the shifter! Lol I don't think the cable is a good option if you need to push into it. It flexes too much and doesn't allow a good precise motion. Glad to see it gone and a more precise method used. 👍🏻

Maybe put some cheap bushings in the bolt holes and the pivot points on your linkages for the shifter? It would tighten it up without making it harder to shift and make it quieter. Also, don't forget the seatbelt you mentioned on the last test drive.

You can make chain slides out of a delrin cutting board. I made one for my motorcycle about 5000 miles ago and it's working out great!

you can acquire a variety of thickness's of Teflon in a sample pak from Mcmaster Carr , use a skateboard wheel or a cutting board to keep chain off of trailing arm .. great toy there .

Before I paint the frames that I have built I take strips of 18ga about 2" long weld them to the bottom of the tubing. After paint I cover them with heat-shrink for my wire holders.

The chain tensioner needs to be 2-3 times in diameter if you want it to be quieter as your radius of wheel is almost the same radius as the chain links currently. That’s why you have all the noise. Hints it was loud af when you just moved chain by hand after new wheel was on

Hi Chris. A motorcycle hydraulic steering damper will control the slop in the gear shifter and maybe stop some shifts to neutral off throttle on rough terrain. All round great work and imagination though

he has a shop full of tools, he could figure it out.. split sprockets are used all the time in industrial applications, with much more torque and duty cycle than a cart, also all with cheap ass industrial chains.. A split sprocket with 90 rotated degree split backer plates sandwiching the sprocket.. it will never fail if done right.

Azusa sells split sprockets for an additional 50 cents to a normal sprocket. I think that's a well worth investment if it ends up saving an hours worth of time each sprocket change over.

If the tensioner has wear issues, you can get a small sprocket and use that instead. Great video. Glad the shifting worked out for you and I like the mods that you did to the trailing arms... pretty sure it's acceptable to call these swing arms.... My thoughts would be that they are swing arms and more specifically trailing swing arms. Either way, we all know what you meant and that's all that matters.

I don't expect that your new tensioner will be much quieter. It's still performing the exact same action but it's going to wear at an astronomical rate. The outside of the chain isn't where you should be tensioning from as the distance from the centre line of the chain to the contact point will change several times per link. You need a geared idler tensioner in there like on pushbike derailleurs.

Hey, i think the weak rear brake is because the calipper is mounted to the chassis. the calipper has to brake additional the weight of the chassis when it bumps. it should be mounted to the sway in my opinion.

There's a type of white nylon that may make a great tensioner wheel. It's been known to wear through cast iron. May be worth looking at.

I actually think you're right calling them swing arms in this instance , independent drive chain and sprocket that wouldn't be out of place on a drag bike plus it bike powered so I'd call them swing arms too.

After the last video,, You should compression test/leak down, clean & sync the carbs just to be on the safe side because It had that running on 2 out of 4 cylinders tone & it wasn't able to pick up even at lower rpm you can hear it..... I've had a half dozen sport bikes, dozens of dirt bikes/atvs/snowmobiles & over 100 cars & that's what I heard despite "not having a different exhaust"...... Regardless of exhaust - What we hear and don't hear - Don't change,,, just the tone does.

You can fix that play up with the gear shifter with a couple of springs either side. bike shifter likes to be in a neutral position not held in gear or jumping around to much pressure on the shift forks and gears. Coming along nicely keep on at it you will get there

The shift linkage seems solid. If you can’t live with the play, I do wonder how a Jet Ski steering cable might work here. They are very strong and should have less play. It’s worth a look into!

That tensioner will also sound, suggestion, use a small drive sprocket instead, that will cancel the noise, guide the chain sides ways and hang more tension if needed

For your chain protector on the trailing arms use a plastic cutting board. One small board should do top and bottom of both arms

Regarding arms chains clearance... sadly you have to modify it to gain more space. The main chain tensioner it is easier and more quite to use a small sprocket on these bearings

would be the best solution cause the hard plastik roller also will be kind of noisy. i use always very soft skateboardwheels cause at the time the chain grinded grooves in it, the chain runs over the tensioner with its rollers and don´t wear down the wheel very much any more so you maybe need 1-2 sparewheels in 5-10 years.

the cable flexes so takes more force if you hand 2 cable one for each direction it would work much better also finer cable could be used i so a video the other day where he made an electronic shiftier from to starter solenoids from a car for your solid gear shifters you could use rubber dampers to take some of the play up and help it from shifting itself due to vibration
