In Spain we hide 2 'surprises' inside: one's a figurine (typically a king, from the Three Wise Men (los Reyes Magos)), and whoever gets it was lucky and gets to keep it. The other surprise is a big ass bean, and whoever gets that one had bad luck and gotta pay for the roscón Edit: The lucky person also gets the gold paper crown that comes with the roscón

Same here in Switzerland. We call it "Königskuchen" - Kingscake. Ours is not a circle like this, but like little breads (Brötchen) that are arranged in a circle before baking so the grow together with the Brötchen left and right to it. We don't have a baby Jesus in there but a little king figurine.

Well, the Roscon has two brothers: the portuguese Bolo Rei and the southern French Gateau des Rois. So the Louisiana version can either have come from Spain or southern France as Louisiana gets populations from borh areas. The day of Kings or Epiphany was a very important holiday in catholicism. Spain is probably the country that preserves its importance the best. Its the day that spanish kids get their gifts and they have parades and a big party all over and of course the ibero american countries of Spanish heritage will also celebrate the day of Kings

The "toy Jesus" is usually actually one of the Three Kings, which have traditionally taken Santa's role in Spain. Also more commonly the figure brings luck or a wish and instead there's a coin or a bean hidden as the "bad ending" so one person gets luck and someone else has to pay for the roscón.

I'm from a Mexican family, and how we do it it is that the person or people ( because there is usually more than one baby jesus) have to make tamales for the next holiday. We usually have it on January 6 because that is when the gospel first arrived to Mexico, I don't know how other cultures have them, but that's how most of Mexico does it.

It's usually wrapped in plastic film or foil so it's very unlikely you'll eat it accidentally. Besides, more than a toy it's usually a ceramic figurine, so it's hard. Usually what happens is that it's very easy to tell where it is, so in my family they will always give it to the youngest kid because they love the surprise thing.
@eykyra

@@iwillconsumeyourflesh5882 The tradition in Spain is that, besides the figurine, there's also a dried bean in the dough and whoever gets it, pays for it. So it's kind like you have either good or bad luck depending on what you find. But currently many stores skip that part and make a Roscón with only surprises, no bean, no bad luck for anyone 😂

Fun fact: Apart from Christmas Day per se, in Spain it's very common to give and receive gifts in Epiphany (6th of January). In Spain it's called "día de Reyes" or "Kings' Day" (in English it's usually called "Three Kings' Day"). As you would expect, it's 6th of January when we traditionally eat this "Roscón de Reyes", and it's delicious!

Coming from Spain, I can tell you few things. This is typically eaten on a Spanish holiday on January 6, like Christmas called the 3 kings, you get gifts under a tree but you have to place a shoe under to get gifts (don't worry you get the shoe back) and typically it come with a paper crown (if you buy) and the little ceramic toy can be anything, whoever gets this gets the crown. There is also a green bean, if you get the green bean you have to pay.

Just for info for people, here in Spain we didn't celebrate Santa. We celebrate the 3 wise men of the East(I think that is how they are called in English) which we call "Los 3 reyes magos",who come to give gifts to children on the 6th of January, thats why this dish is called Roscón de Reyes, we eat it on that day. Nowadays some families celebrate Santa, but most of us, Spanish people still make the 6th the special day, and some celebrate both of them.

Y comemos el Roscón de Reyes, pero sin nata/crema, que es el original. Quien encuentra la figura (puede ser de Jesús u otra) es el afortunado del día, y quien encuentra el haba es el que paga. I am an American but I've been living in Spain for a long time. El Roscon de Reyes is a cake that we eat the 6th of January with your family and friends, there is a king and a been in the cake. Who ever gets the king gets to wear a crown that comes with the cake, whoever gets the bean has to pay for the cake.

Actually, the one who finds a king (or a baby Jesus, but I personally prefer the king) is the one who gets a crown (made from some type of cardboard) and the one who finds the broad/Fava bean pays for the whole thing. It's called Roscón de Reyes because we have the "Reyes Magos" after Christmas, on January. The names of those three kings are: Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar. Edit: You can also get one that's half chocolate and half vanilla , and I assure you that the Roscón de Reyes it's delicious, try it if you can!!

We eat this on January 6th (still considered Christmas season here), which we call the "Three Wise Men Day" (that, transliterated, we call "Three Wizard Kings Day"), which is the day that we typically give presents to Children (much more than Christmas Day, specially before the 90s/2000s). CORRECTION: It doesn't have a "baby Jesus" but a tiny figure (almost almost always a king) AND a bean. The person that gets the bean has to pay the Roscón, and the person that gets the figure gets a present (that almost always is just a symbolic cardboard crown that comes with the Roscón). Roscones are also most often split and filled than not. And most often they're also very dry (even filled ones) but that might just be my personal bias due to my family usually purchasing cheap ones 🤣(I reaaaaaally love good Roscones, but hate cheap dry ones, bc they remind me of the taste of good ones but the dryness reaaaaally ruins it for me and the taste is also usually weaker).

Spanish here and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I will say that I've started making our family's roscones this year and no store-bought or bakery-made one comes even close. Traditionally the dough is relatively aromatic (Agua de Azahar) but some bakeries overdo it and it ruins it for me. I put in a little bit less of that, it's almost unnoticeable. My recipe also makes for a pretty "dense", chewy and perfectly moist finished product. It's a game changer.

being spanish, I am sure that almost nobody cooks this at home, you buy it at your favourite baker. Two things get inside the "roscón", the figure (whatever: a king, but almost EVERYTHING. This year I got a little figure of a clock) and a bean. If you get the figure you are the King, and you get the cardboard crown which is included. When you get the bean instead, you have to pay the "roscón" (actually your mum/grandmother/uncle/aunt/friend/yourself has paid before so nobody actually pays it when they get the bean). Anyway your "roscón" looks quite good!

Didn't expect to see this. I don't live in Spain since many years so I make it every January for the Epiphany. I find it pretty easy to make but you do have to dedicate many hours to all the steps, resting time, etc. It's really just a bread dough, not a cake, but the rosewater (and lemon, orange, cinnamon, etc) infused milk is really the essence of the whole thing and why I love it.

Louisiana was under Spanish rule from the late 1760’s to 1801. The evidence lives on in some of the cuisine and architecture of New Orleans.

We do something like that too. I am Mexican, American, and whoever receives the little baby makes openings next time. But there are different stories to that type of cake thing and there’s different stories on what happens if you receive it as well.
