So I gave Raveena a listen back in 2018, but it didn't click for me. I even tried listening to her music a few times, but idk I just didn't "feel it". Fast forward to the autumn of 2019, the leaves were changing and my academically over-achieving self started failing all my classes in school after developing panic attacks and taking way too many amphetamines and barely sleeping, working a second job because I had been robbed in the spring of that horrible year. I truly felt like my life was falling apart, like I was losing my sense of purpose and direction, my sense of self-worth and identity was so wrapped up in school - while I was going through this really difficult fall season, I was also falling in love for the first time in many years with someone very unexpected, a one-night stand who became so much more to me immediately by the end of our first date - which ended up in us taking a hot bath together & listening to emo music (her request lmao, I happily obliged) followed by Sade. Instead of having meaningless but fun hookup sex I discovered we had so much more in common than I had previously ever imagined possible. Some lonely drunken night after that I stumbled home from the clubs, feeling a sense of longing for my newfound lover, and was really craving Sade's music - I was going through a second (or third?) Sade phase at the time, playing her sexy but subtle, delicate yet powerfully feminine music for the woman I was falling in love with, which was all very exciting to me because I was single the other times I had heavy Sade listening phases. It was while I was in a Sade youtube hole that hazy autumnal in the dead of night, staying up way too late for no good reason other than to relish in the luscious solitude of that good kind of loneliness - the kind when you really feel and truly listen to the music (a night exactly like tonight) that I stumbled upon this video. I was immediately drawn to Raveena's unique fashion sense, but then I found myself carefully noting and feeling intrigued by the diverse musicians comprising the backing band, the instruments they were playing, before finally being floored by the overall quality of the performance. Then "Still Dreaming" came on, and I lost it, lost myself completely in Raveena's voice and seductively personal & intimate lyrics. I was so enamored by the beauty of it all, the video, the music, the lyrics, that I started crying tears just being beholden by the experience of it all. This was the second time I've ever cried tears for the beauty of "it" when experiencing new music for the first time. About a year and a half before these tears of beauty flowed for this video, FKA Twigs - Cellophane completely broke me down as I had just been dumped for the first time by the first guy I had ever dated. After having been in a horrible relationship that left me very scarred for years prior, with my walls so high up for so many years spent alone, I am so thankful for this incredible woman who loves her emotional guy who cries to truly, profoundly beautiful music the first time he hears it. She loves that about me, it blows my mind that I found someone who truly loves everything about me, who doesn't make me feel like less of a man for my sexuality or for being emotional - but instead makes me feel like MORE of a man for being bravely myself & showing no fear expressing deeply felt emotions. I felt my walls rapidly crumbling when I showed her FKA Twigs - Cellophane for the first time and she also cried, having the same reaction as I did. I find it extremely powerful to be able to be moved by music so much that it makes you cry, especially when it's your first time ever hearing the music, it imprints such a powerful memory and attachment to the music, and I'm so glad I have discovered and allowed myself this strength. In fact, crying to music with my lover - an experience we have shared twice now when we mourn & celebrate her departed sister by listening to her sister's favorite songs, songs she had to pick out for the funeral of her beloved sister who raised her - that I feel closest to & most intimate with her. I was always a crybaby as a young boy but over the years life made me cold and throughout my 20s (especially in the couple years leading up to this) I felt very emotionless compared to how I was as a child and a teenager, like a sad robot broken by the world and let down by anyone and anything I had ever cared about. Life, people, and the world are cold and cruel but there is still beauty & love and sometimes it takes a decade to remember that but it always makes this life worth living once you do. Anyways I've hardly ever felt compelled to comment much on KZbin, more or less write an entire prose piece bearing my deeply heartfelt and personal connection to a song, but thanks for reading, I hope this maybe moved you in some way & that you remember to open your heart to beauty and love in the most unexpected places and times with the most unexpected people. Here's to "real" music, to music that makes you cry "tears of beauty" the first or any time you hear it, to crying to music in general, to giving lovers another chance - much like I did with Raveena's music, and to falling in love in the deepest and most unexpected ways and times in life. We both love Still Dreaming and listen to it often together, singing it together laying in bed on a lazy morning, when we are in the car going for a scenic drive, when the sun is setting, at night after an argument when we kiss & makeup. I have no doubt this song will play at our wedding one day, it is "our" song. Thank you, so very dearly much Raveena, for making something so emotional, real, and breathtakingly beautiful. Thank you for reminding me to open my closed & cold heart to the warmth of love and grace. Thank you for giving me tears of beauty, you're truly an incredible artist who actually creates from the heart & soul (very rare these days!) & I can't wait to follow your musical journey and see where it takes you, and us.
