Elephants have structures in their feet that make them very sensitive to sound vibrations in the ground, which allows them to communicate over large distances. She's probably feeling this as well as hearing it.

That's right! It's called "infrasound" and their range of hearing also goes much lower than humans does. That's why in the 2004 Indonesia earthquake and tsunami, the elephants all ran away up into the hills long before the wave hit. They heard the Earth ring like a giant gong, and knew death was coming.

It's honestly fascinating to observe animals' reactions to artistic mediums of humans. It's clear that there's a form of communication that the elephant is able perceive from the music. Given its inherent biological difference, of course, its interpretation is undoubtedly different, but still there's a strong indication of genuine curiosity in this particular elephant's behavior; this observation is solidified by how the other elephants, of which Paul Barton has played piano for, displayed similar reactions of curiosity.

When I first started playing guitar, I was about 8 months into it when I decided to take my little bowl of weed, my acoustic guitar, and go sit under a bridge. I played to the sound of running water. When I stopped...the entire area was teaming with animals. They gathered around to listen. If I played, they were quiet. If I stopped, they'd rustle about. I remember watching the deer standing in the creek waiting for the next note. I knew that day, that I have the power to make wild animals content. It was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

I play piano a bit, too. One evening as I practised, I noticed a blackbird standing outside on the widowsill. He was tilting his head close to the glass... for all the world it was as if he was listening intently!! He stayed for nearly ten minutes. Then, later in the week, I heard him singing his evening serenade from my garage roof, and yes he HAD been listening. He sang back to me the "fanfare" hook of "Dancing Queen " by ABBA. You know, the bit that goes "De-daa, de-daa, de-daa." For weeks after, I heard this phrase in sweet birdsong every day. What's more, I am no way sure it was always the SAME blackbird singing it! Thank you for reading. Best wishes to Paul.. ..and the elephants.

Every time i would bring out the guitar, my rottweiler would lay down right next to me and with a big sigh go into a total state of relaxation. It was obvious he really enjoyed it whenever I played the instrument. I always wished I could relax like he did, but I projected a certain vibe that he really enjoyed. Perhaps I should have had the weed along for the ride.

@@ytyt3922 my husky gets very embarrassed. when we first brought her home from spending some weeks in a kennel, she didn't realize how much she had grown. she was acting sort of tough and independent, when she leaped onto my bed for the first time and way overshot. jumped way too high. when she landed she kind of froze, immediately the look on her face was of surprise and embarrassment, and she buried her face bc we had just seen her do a very silly thing. you can see lots of dogs online feeling guilt and shame, too. The more social the animal, the more complex their emotions. but idk what an elephant has to be embarrassed about, they're pretty silly to begin with.
