Ravens vs Crows "Hawks"

One of the biggest differences between the Common Ravens and the American Crows in my area is their behavior, and that includes how they treat other animals and birds. In this video I show how crows attack hawks (eagles and any other rival bird they want out of "their" territory) to chase them out, and then you'll see how the ravens go about it. To me, there's a big difference in the way they choose to do it, the thought involved, and even the results. I find the ravens to be calmer, more methodical, quieter, more kung foo-ish. The crows are louder, reactionary, with guns blazing ... ?
For those who care, all these scenes were shot at Crystal Cove State Park in Southern California over the last 2 days in February 2020, as I'm waiting for nesting season to begin.
The music are excerpts from Justin Enayat's "Soaring"

I wish we had Ravens where I live. I do love talking to magpies that we have in Australia though 😁 I saw two crows murder a myna once. A group of myna were attacking a crow nest. The best/most disturbing part was the crows dropping the corpse from a tree 20m up and then laughing like evil villians 😅

*I've seen my Raven Edgar play the tail-tug-game with an adult bald eagle it was so funny...the eagle who hop away to another branch the Raven would come in stealthy from behind and yank on his tail feathers and the eagle would just flap its wings in anger while vocalizing....you could almost hear what the eagle was saying "Please just leavvvvve me alonnnne pleassssse" lol*

I just seen one coming for my chickens than a few ravens showed up in the sky and they chased it off. Coolest thing I’d seen in awhile. I had to come see of those little birds could really fight off a hawk. I am definitely impressed!

Amazing video!!! Thank you so much for sharing this incredible video! It's fascinating to see your relationship with the winged ones. They do not yet come that close to me but I too share an affinity for these beautiful beings and these two birds are my favorite!!! Raven and a hawk; I love them!!!! I love how much talking and interaction you have captured. Such incredible stuff!!! P.S.-I am glad I'm not the only one to talk with them and be fascinated by them. :)

Just like a gang member can’t face one on one but have to have several to back up. That’s what I like of raptors they do their dirty job alone.

I've adopted a crow couple and I'm *in love* with them. They crack me up and just recently 'said' 2 new sounds. I work with them every morning. They'll follow me on my walks and even follow me in my car on occasion. If they don't feel like following me then they'll wait patiently until I return. Thank you for your channel. I love it! I lived in Greenland for several years, the ravens in the area would circle seals laying out on the bay ice when Inuit were in the area. If the Inuit took a seal after a raven had spotted for them they'd leave scraps behind for the birds to eat.

That's why ravens tend to follow many types of hunters, deer, elk, seals, most all large animals the hunters will leave a "gut pile." The ravens know that. They follow me because I move road kill off the road so other animals won't get killed also. They are more observant than many other animals, and opportunists!

LOL, the tag team routine is hilarious. Crows are far from cowardseither. Seen them chase buzzards (buteo buteo) and hawks relentlessly on their own and couldn't figure out wether that was because of adolescent bravado or to chase them asway from a colony. Buzzards are 'sitting ducks,' because they aren't very agile or agressive in their defence, but hawks are quite nimble and usually put up a real fight. And in all but one case, the crow got away with it. Only once have I seen that the hawk was so agitated, that he caught the crow with his talons in a strange maneuver (almost reversing and turning upside down in flight, catching the diving crow head on, never seen that in my life before or since). I could see the hawk coming down with the crow nearby and could see him 'shielding' his prey with his wings through my binoculars. I thought the hawk would continue to devour his prey, but he showed no further interest and as soon as the crow stopped twitching he relaxed a bit and then flew away. Reminded me of the story of Icarus. Sometimes youthfull (?) overconfidence leads to demise.

A lot of times, when it comes to Crows and Ravens making territorial swoops is that there's almost always more than one involved, just in case things go topsy-turvy. It does appear that the hawk wanted to catch that crow! But that obviously didn't happen, it rarely ever does.

Awesome! I love watching ravens, whenever I hear or see one, I everything else gets uninteresting and I'm fully focused on them. I watched a couple of ravens raising their children last year and now they started breeding again finally! One question : do you know how to see the difference between male and female raven?

Only two ways I've figured out; when they mate ... and when they are nesting. For when they are nesting only she sits on the nest and he feeds her. So during this time I look closely at things like the bill, a difference in shape, or a larger hook on one, I look to see if one has a feather missing in the wing or tail, or a spot of some sort. That way I can tell them apart for the rest of the season. In time, their personalities stand out so over the years I can always tell which bird is which in the couple all year long, but that is something that comes with time and patience! Good luck!

@@theravendiaries interesting, because here in my area (Germany) I saw them both nesting🤔. Unfortunately I did not record one of these changes. Thank you for the quick answer!

we have tons of ravens here in the white mountains of northern arizona, and i watch them all the time. we've had a lot of strong winds lately, and while the other birds hunker down, the ravens take wing and do all sorts of aerobatics. on calmer days they can often be seen soaring in lazy circles high above. i saw some interesting interaction a few weeks ago. there were three ravens flying in circles overhead, and then i noticed a red-tailed hawk was with them. at first i thought the hawk was being chased away, but as i watched, i realized that the hawk was actually flying with the ravens. sometimes it would be in front of a raven, and sometimes it flew beside it. when the raven turned away from the hawk, it turned to follow the raven. and then just a few days ago i was at the same place and i observed the same behavior with a red-tailed hawk and some ravens. i wonder if this was the same hawk. i also wonder how it came to be so friendly with the ravens. i love discovering new mysteries surrounding God's wonderful creatures.

There are a bunch of ravens that circle daily in northern Irvine - do you think they are the same ones? Do they travel that far daily?

The ones I work with stay in the park at Crystal Cove. But if you are anywhere near Irvine Park, there's a pretty good concentration of ravens in that area.
