In this video I want to show you another way of lightening an image in a very simple but powerful way by using the raw white point control.
I will also demonstrate adding local contrast using a local adjustment spot with the tone mapping tool.
We will also be adding a little more detail on the crop tool usage, and doing a minimal retouch in Photoshop.

I am blissful - or is it called happynized with these extra 17 minutes. Your insight with RT is impressive. Even I am learning a bit more each time - not in the sense that I know a lot about RT, no - it has to be understood relative to my general learning curve which is comparable with a highway climbing at a rate of 5 percent and me driving at a comfortable low speed.

Coming from a complete noob, i have a question to ask to some guys with a more experienced eye. As making the head pop put of the image more lively as seemingly one of the main goals of the editing it feels to me as its colouring is quite different from the lynxes body. Does it look natural to you? Also in the og picture the body is much warmer than the face so maybe it is... mhh just wondering and trying to train the eye

I did an "L" curve adj on a dark photo with a red object and compared it to a "RAW White Point" adj. I find that the RWP adj does a better job of preserving the colors in the image (like the red object) while brightening at the same time.. Does that make sense?

Yes Mike - as the caption said - white point adjust takes place before demosaicing so everything is remapped in existing ratios.

Is the local adjustment tool a new addition? I am using 5.8 and see no such icon other than a "hand" icon that only moves the image in the window,there is no drop down to the spot command etc. when I click on it.

(Sorry if this comment comes up multiple times, KZbin seems to have a bit of a problem there (or you keep deleting it but I don't think so) 0:56 _You didn't show any processing of the last image_ - Well, you were presenting the crop tool so why would you go any further? I think it's was a good video and it was on the spot. Edits added while watching: 1) 5:30 "Show additional settings" - There is a pretty lengthy but detailed comment on local adjustments in the dicussion section on github. I read through it and I though that I would really like to see a professional photographer to drop his two cents on there. And you seem to be one of a kind: Pro Photographer + uses RawTherapee + Adds comments to github 2) 14:40 Shift + move crop: I can't remember if it was in the tool video, but after looking it through I would say no. So nice tip there!

I approved the previous comment so no clue where its gone! I try to stay away from GitHub if I can - far too nerdy and codey for my tastes, and there's only a couple of 'em who listen to me!!! These shorter videos are actually harder work than the long ones you know, so I'm glad they're hitting the mark. Cheers for the idea and feedback 🍻🍻

@@AndyAstbury As a small additional idea: Since you are using RawTherapee anyway you could use GIMP to have a FOSS-only workflow. I think I've been using GIMP for all my editing in the past ~5 years and the little cloning could also be done there wither with 'clone' (C) or 'heal' (h). Not sure about the export using ProPhotoRGB though.

Now you've ventured into a realm I refuse to go to myself, make no mistake, GIMP is something you will never see on my channel. I use and demo RT because it is brilliant, not because it's FOSS, and I I try and promote RT as a more powerful alternative to the likes of Lightroom. As a 30+ year veteran of Photoshop I find GIMP awful - and you are 100% spot on about the ProPhoto bit - what use is a programme to me that cannot support the imaging worlds most widely accepted global ISO standard for archival image workflow.

@@AndyAstbury the comment/tip about shift + move is still there from Rick: Rick N 1 week ago Nice, thanks Andy. Once you have selected the crop if you shift and hold the click you can move the crop around as well.
