Lawmakers should amend a law which comprehensively protects the law enforcement community. I would call it 'Law Enforcement Protection Act'. It should contain a clause which calls for the mandatory sentencing of minimum of 45 years in prison for assaulting a police officer. I would bet it will significantly diminish the number of tragedies like the one involving officer Travis Brown. Also, it will send a stern warning to those who are actively seeking to harm police officers.

30 years ago, every officer on my department was equipped with a riot helmet and face shield. Why if faced with potential protester violence were the officers not wearing such gear???
