There’s a subtext going on as well between Jeff, the very black skinned, more blue-collar worker, and Joe, the taller, light-skinned, artistically sophisticated person. I’m not black, but I grew up in the Deep South and I know there’s been this separation and conflict going back to slave days between the field hands and the house servants. It’s interesting to see it “low key” play out in this scene and a few others.

If you listen to the commentary on the movie, Director Taylor Hackford says that this scene was one of the more controversial scenes of the movie because it was alleged that Jeff stole from Ray when there's no concrete evidence. Jeff Brown and those who knew him swear he never stole from Ray. However, Ray Charles to his dying day believed Jeff stole but we'll never know the answer! But Ray Charles was a tough businessman and reneged on some promises he made to Jeff! But at the end of the day we will never know what really happened!

I could be wrong, but the way the movie was played out to this scene makes me believe that when Ray's had no clue that his wife knew about Margie and have a baby, so the only person that could have told her about Margie was Jeff or Fathead. So in Ray's mind, there was a lost of trust, so probably Ray had Joe investigate both Jeff and Fathead. As you see the way the movie was portrayed. Friend or partner, Ray had zero tolerance for anyone taking advantage of him. Regardless it was a great movie. Great performances by all. But of course Jamie Fox performance as Ray Charles was impeccable. And surely a well deserved oscar for best actor.

I wish they’d do a 20th anniversary director’s cut that featured more of the deleted scenes. I know they did an extended cut that was on the original pressing of the dvd, but it was edited pretty roughly. The parts where it’d go from an original scene to an added scene were kind of choppy. I wish they’d clean it up and add a couple of the things that didn’t even make the original extended cut. That’d be so cool.
