Happy to have discovered this guy. So far I like his methodical, matter-of-fact shows much better than the Bear Gryll's overly stylized dramas

Bear Grylls is a reality TV style 'survival' expert. Ray Mears is just a genuine survival expert. He is so knowledgeable, and takes lessons from innumerable different indigenous peoples, modern militaries, and proven survival techniques. He makes a point of gaining expertise in not some, but all different environments, from the oceans, to the mountains, to the desert, to the plains, to... well, everything inbetween. He's such an interesting guy, with such respect for nature, and *none* of what he does is for show - a refreshing change from every other 'survival' or 'bushcraft' show going, and the reason I've always really respected him. Beetrecca is right - he's a legend in the UK, (in the right circles). God save Ray Mears!!!

Ray is a very knowledgable guy who has no need to carry a huge ego around with him,unlike his contempories in this field.some people have their own name branded merchandise and ruck sacks to help carry it in.humble and wise gets my respect.

That is an awesome Video. I first heard of this in the early 80 in "Sports Afield" magazine and read the short story about Callahan. Then in the 2002 or so, I got the book a the library and read it. Great story.

One of the most important things to have in your sea survival kit is a reverse osmosis hand pump. You can then use the sea water to get fresh water. I read a book where a couple spent a long time in a raft after a whale sunk their sail boat, but they had a reverse osmosis pump and never wanted for water.

Yeah you're right - air does slowly escape, but it gives you a few minutes of buoyancy - after that you just have to swing your pants over your head again to refill the legs and stay afloat for another few minutes. Tedious yes, but it's a hell of a lot easier than treading water instead

Seems like its an impossible thing to survive out there. I guess without those solar stills this guy would have been a goner, most people wouldnt have one of those stills i imagine. Definitely an awesome story this guy has, that he was surviving so well. Amazing stuff here

Hypothermia is the biggest menace. Even in 50 Farenheit, you lose body temp so fast that you only have about 1-3 hours survival. In freezing water, 30 minutes or less.

water from the spinal cords of fish? Are you serious? Have you seen many fish with water in their spines? they dont have much fluid in their spine, if you can find any at all. They dont have spines like humans, and any fish that was small enough for him to spear, definitely didnt have any spinal fluid like you're saying. The eyes on the other hand, you're absolutely right...they are like gumballs full of drinkable water.

All thats tellin me is design easier to open flares
@problemattk99665 жыл бұрын
You're right, there is definitely some room for improvement in the design of the flares. However we can't make them too easy and simple to detonate because of the fact that they might go off in the boat or the storage bag accidentally, they need the plastic packaging to protect it from sea water or corrosion. setting the whole thing alight, to specify; If setting them off is as simple as a pull tag, or a pull-ring thing like a grenade, they could easily get caught on something when moving them around or accidentally ignite because of rough waves. on open water, in a survival situation, The last thing you want is a blazing firework stored in the boat, man. It's a good idea though.
@mike-Occslong5 жыл бұрын
@@problemattk9966 yeh thats a good point. I think the flare its self looks fine just the bag should maybe be a bit easier to open?
