When I was in high school (early 1970s) my vocational agriculture class was tasked with building sidewalks between a couple of buildings at the school. I do not know if they had bags of premixed concrete, but if they did we did not get any. We got a bunch of bags of cement and a pile of sand and gravel and had to put the proper amount of each into the little barrel mixer. A single bag of cement weighs 100 pounds each. We got out of our other regular classes for the afternoon and formed and poured 100 feet of sidewalk 4 inches deep and 3 feet wide in 4 hours. The sidewalk was run along a gravel driveway so the ground was already packed and we just had to have it follow the contours of the drive which saved a lot of time. And there were 10 of us so we were able to pretty much assembly line the work.

Tip for mixing concrete is to have a Five gallon bucket with a line drawn on it at the perfect amount, if not a little less for one bag. That way you don’t spend time slowly guessing how much water to put in.

Another option that is way easier is to buy the precast concrete footers. Dig a hole to the frost line, toss them in, set your posts, and backfill. Done in a few hours. You’ll be dead and gone before the ground contact lumber needs to be replaced. Your way isn’t wrong, just a lot more work.

Like I mentioned to someone else, I was not 100% sure if the placement of my post was correct. So with an oversize footing, I knew that if my post bases were off a couple inches I would still have enough footing for the post to sit on and feel comfortable. Also, the auger I don’t think would’ve worked with all the systems and rocks!

Jay, you can't skip the depth of holes, rather than base size. The first one is to outrun freeze in the soil so that in the winter water below the footers isn't moving whits each season. The latter one should regard the size of the structure above. Said that, having one of them wrong will only be visible decades later.
