@@djluvsdi2029 If that was the extent of why she was so troubled by his behavior, your equally thin argument would make sense. It's brought up time and time again by almost every single person Raylan works with and even Boyd at times. Raylan is a self-destructive nightmare. It's why Art is almost always on his case. He does things he absolutely doesn't have to and gets himself in bad predicaments. He is fueled by his anger and it led to the demise of their marriage. He hasn't changed. Just because he has situational awareness skills doesn't mean he always uses them in an efficient or safe way. Stopping in the middle of traffic, confronting two men who are following you and who are likely armed, and then threatening them would raise anyone's eyebrows.

Like if Raylan didn't notice those hit men were following them they probably would have shot them up at their destination. Also let's not pretend Winona is a saint either. Between cheating on her husband Gary then taking 200000 dollars in evidence money and forcing her ex to put it back which could have costed his job (and get him arrested) she had crippling issues too that you're overlooking. @RemingtonDean10 ай бұрын
In the interest of fairness, raylan is exclusively attracted to absolutely gorgeous, insane women who make terrible decisions. They're responsible for their actions, but it's not their fault he keeps picking them.
@Aimee_Oakland9 ай бұрын
What show did you even watch? Underneath that cool and controlled exterior is a very angry man, that's one of Raylan's defining characteristics. That's exactly what Winona is alluding to at the end of the pilot. It's not anger in just an outwardly way, but how that anger consumes him and makes him unable to face his trauma or deal with his emotional baggage (hence why he can't maintain a relationship with Winona, the woman he has always been in love with).
@Gunleaver8 ай бұрын
Except that's not really what Raylan was doing. His "giving people a chance" is not being nice, it's not doing the normal decent human thing of refraining from murdering everyone who annoys you. No, what Raylan does with these little friendly warnings and chances is giving himself an out to then kill them. The whole title of the show refers to this trait. Raylen is constantly angry, per Winona's diagnosis (said, I should point out, in a fond, friendly manner, after he has broken into her house and threatened her husband) in the pilot, and he is looking for excuses to lash out at people. He is not controlling his anger or dealing with it, he is taking steps to protect himself from the fallout of his habit of expressing his anger through violence. Basically, Raylan is a simpler, more emotional version of Dexter Morgan, and the folksy second chance/fair warning thing is his ritual. Dexter meticulously vets his targets to ensure that they are bad, and incorporates thoroughly covering his tracks into his killing ritual, to both satisfy whatever warped emotional need he must satisfy with homicide. Raylan is doing the same thing with his often provocatively phrased (intentionally so, IMO) warnings to those he confronts, with the same goal as Dexter's detective-designed ritual - sate his bloodlust while not getting charged with felony homicide.
@maxzymator8 ай бұрын
@@Gunleaver You absolutely misunderstood Raylan's character. As basically everyone else in the show. Raylan's constant frustration stems not from him being evil and "emotional Dexter" but from people constantly misjudge him as angry (exactly what you and Wynona did). If he was as you describe him he would kill that hillbilly who wanted to kill a judge, he would kill Duffy, he would kill much more people. He wouldn't be calmly and politely taking off his hat when it is appropriate, as in that scene where mexican granpa tried to defend that "dentist" from season 1. He would be constantly rude, condescending and arrogant. But he never gave even a hint of those qualities. You see - you even misunerdstood the name of the show. it doesn't refer to Raylan trying to give him self an out when killing people, it refers to him constantly being in situations with an unaviodable end but constantly being truly justified in his actions. That's just his life to be in such predicaments. A true man, a true hero. Your point of view on his character is a point of view of a naive woman, who has no idea what world and true men are actually like.
@Gunleaver8 ай бұрын
@@maxzymator No, the point is he seeks situations where he IS Justified. He is NOT looking for excuses, because he doesn't need excuses, that's the meaning behind his anger. And there is a good bit of self-destructiveness in there as well, which is why he tries to save others from going down his path, like Judge Reardon and Loretta. As for rude, condescending and arrogant - he IS. Condescending & arrogant perfectly describes his attitude toward the guys following him in this clip, he is talking down to them, in the certainty that he can crush them. He does talk smack all the time to bad guys, because deep inside he WANTS them to attack, so he can vent his anger on them. Raylan constantly finds himself in situations where killing is justified, because that's where he wants to be. He could very easily avoid those situations, but he doesn't. He talks a lot about going to Glencoe and getting out of the field, but somehow just keeps putting it off until the very end of the show when he has nothing else to keep him in the field. He did not need to make the threat to Tommy Bucks, or confront him on the rooftop. He could have made an impassioned plea to the judge to keep Dickie Bennett in jail. He could have arranged for protection for Winona and Willa instead of setting up Nicky Augustine to be murdered by Sammy Tonin. His whole method of approaching problems is confrontational, he sees out conflict and confrontation. That it doesn't always end in death, and that he can and does often talk his adversary down, does not change the point that he still seeks out the confrontation and still derives a degree of satisfaction in winning such confrontations by making the other party back down, or by choosing to hold the moral high ground over others by highlighting the point that he COULD kill, and sometimes does not. For example, when the killer convict took a hostage in the Marshall's office, Raylan talked him down for a variety of reasons (this is called a complex character, as opposed to a straight-forward, and boring, goody-two-shoes). Part of it had to do with his empathy for, and identification with, this anti-social thug, and sharing his contempt for the institutions of the law. Part of it was based on agency rivalry, and wanting to get the better of the SWAT team, by resolving the problem peacefully instead of letting them storm the room. Note the methods he uses involve making his boss contribute his special booze and his coworker go on a chicken run. It's Raylan showing off his big-dick energy. Finally, there is the point of making a show of his restraint in front of the federal prosecutor who he knows is going to interview him about his past conduct. And to be clear, Raylan's anger issues do not make him evil. They arguably make him heroic, in that he fights so hard and exercises such control over those issues. The outlet he chooses for his anger makes him extremely useful when there are bad guys who need to be stopped. The point the show is making, repeatedly, is that when a confrontation is NOT called for, Raylan is either useless or an active hinderance. Art is his friend, but considers him a huge pain in the ass, telling Raylan that he's a good lawman, but a lousy Marshall. Tim & Rachel absolutely trust his judgement and skills when it comes to a fight, and the rest of the time are rolling their eyes at him, and complaining about his making more work for them, or else dumping his work on them.

Headrests in cars are often removed during filming if they might interfere with a shot. If it doesn't matter for the shot they might get left in.
