Thats why he‘s scared - he‘s in serious danger of losing a substantial amount of his valuable crewmates here if rayleigh would choose to go berserk; which would set back BB substantially im his plans. Also since rayleigh doesnt have a fruit that BB can steal theres nothing he could win when fighting rayleigh - it would just be a waste of time and resources.

one thing to note is that Blackbeard only takes garenteed fights with no losses, in the capture of ace he had his entire crew set up an ambush and didn't reveal all his cards until it was too late for counterplay since the ground was even and there would be nowhere for ace to go so he would have to go into the dark and lose his fruit's ability, in marineford he refused to do pretty much anything until roger was heavily injured, in impel down he didn't even really try to fight the warden basically escping as soon as he was poisoned. He has his crew for Law and even when taking whitebeard's fruit he was careful to not let anyone see. In addtion to all that immediately after whitebeards' death he immediately retreated not sticking around for any longer then he needs to. He's never really fought any yonko in even playing field and trys to maintain 0 injuries on his crew. All this suggests that since Rayleigh was outside of his calculations that it wasn't worth to fight him, even in the event that he won overwelmingly it woudn't be worth since it gives a window for the navy and other unaccounted people like Gaben or even ankoji from his crew to attack and kill him. Blackbeard is overtly cautious and that repersents him perfectly

Honestly it always makes me mad when people call Blackbeard a coward. He is not a coward. He is an opportunist more then anything else. There is a HUGE difference. Blackbeard chooses his fights for the situations where he is able to get the most profit at the least cost. Blackbeard is cautious of Rayleigh because he is one of the few people from the old era still alive who knows what prime Rayleigh was capable of. He also knows that the darkness fruit is strongest against DF users. Not normal people. While all his powers with the dark fruit still work black hole, liberation, and probably some other stuff we haven't see yet. His power to nullify devil fruits is useless against Rayleigh AND he can't use vortex specifically which is a huge part of his arsenal considering he has used it every fight he's been in so far. Blackbeard thinking about old days Rayleigh may THINK he can win now but he doesn't KNOW he can win for sure. Thinking and knowing two very different things. And if he could win he could get seriously injured out of the exchange which would make the cost greater then the gain therefore not worth it. He can always come back again to claim his prize in a more favorable position. It's Blackbeard alone vs EVERYONE. His crew is stone. Very disadvantageous. Say what you will of Blackbeard but he is painted in a very bad light. He is not weak he is strong. He is not a coward he is an opportunist, he is not stupid he is actually rather intelligent one of the few characters to actually plan out moves in advance effectively. He worked his way up to warlord without anyone having any clue what he was up to and then a Yonko. He intercepted law knowing full well ONE of the three would cross him on their course. He tracked down multiple very powerful fruit users and acquired their powers for his crew. He knew exactly which fruit he wanted to rise to the top of the onepiece world and knew where his best chances were to acquire it planning stuff decades in advance. So I say again. Think very carefully about Blackbeard as a character before you call him this or that. He is dangerous. He is a man to be keeping a sharp eye on. He also gets a ton of hate because he's an antagonist unfortunately and killed characters people like. Backing down vs Koby, Rayleigh, and Hancock was a smart decision on his part. Still even walked away with Koby so it wasn't as big as an L.
